Butcher of the Horde and Bloodsoaked Champion: Mardu Synergy

Today’s tip unfortunately doesn’t cover any of the new cards from Fate Reforged, but it’s still quite useful! Butcher of the Horde is a pretty neat card, and it lets you turn your creatures (such as the goblin tokens from Goblin Rabblemaster) into value. But Rabblemaster might attack right into your opponent’s Manifest/Morph and die a horrible death. Without Rabblemaster churning out adorable monkey-faced Goblins, how will you feed your Butcher?

With Bloodsoaked Champion, that’s how! The obvious trick here is to sacrifice Champion to Butcher for something (lifelink or vigilance, for example) and Raid it back later that turn to repeat the next turn. But the Champion’s ability is just that: an ability! You aren’t casting the Champion, you’re cheating it straight onto the field. And like most activated abilities, you can use Champion’s any time you have priority.

What that means is you can recur it and sac it again as many times as you can pay the 1B cost, assuming Raid is enabled. So what you can do is sacrifice Champion to give your Butcher vigilance, then attack with it. After attacks, activate Champion to bring it back, then sacrifice it again to give your Butcher lifelink! Those Mardu sure do enjoy value.
