Crux of Fate vs. Protection from Black

Welcome back everyone. Today, we’re going to talk about the latest black boardwipe, Crux of Fate.

You have a board full of non-dragon creatures, but your opponent has hit five mana and taps out to cast Crux of Fate, choosing to destroy all non-dragon creatures. You’re holding a Center Soul and a Ranger’s Guile. Can either of these cards save one of your creatures?

If you’re familiar with cards like Wrath of God and Day of Judgment, you probably already know the answer: no, they won’t help you. Protection from Black helps against four things: prevent all damage from black sources; can’t have black enchantments or equipment attached to it; can’t be blocked by black creatures; and can’t be targeted by black spells or abilities of black sources (commonly collected under the acronym of DEBT.) The Crux does none of those things, so having protection from black will not help: the creature will still be destroyed.

Likewise, hexproof will not help save your creature either: the Crux doesn’t target anything, so having hexproof will not save the creature and it will be destroyed.

Well, that’s all I have for today. Let’s talk again tomorrow.
