{"id":287,"date":"2012-12-14T23:31:25","date_gmt":"2012-12-14T23:31:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferencecontent\/?p=287"},"modified":"2013-04-13T12:01:41","modified_gmt":"2013-04-13T12:01:41","slug":"making-judging-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferencecontent\/2012\/12\/14\/making-judging-work\/","title":{"rendered":"Making Judging Work"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>The following Document contains information originally provided by\u00a0<span class='judge-tooltip'><a href='https:\/\/apps.magicjudges.org\/judges\/dci\/5141121850' >Tasha Jamison<\/a><span class='avatar'><img width='200' height='200' src='https:\/\/apps.magicjudges.org\/dci\/avatar?dci=5141121850&size=200'><\/span><\/span>.<\/h3>\n<h2><strong>Judging Skills<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>What do you do when judging that relates to non-Magic activities?<\/p>\n<h3>Marketing<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Advertising local (regional, national, international) events<\/li>\n<li>Representing Wizards of the Coast&#8217;s brand<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Customer service<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Answering rules questions<\/li>\n<li>Assessing infractions when a rules violation occurs<\/li>\n<li>Conflict resolution (of all scales)<\/li>\n<li>Crowd control (registration)<\/li>\n<li>Emergency response\u2014taking control of (8, 100, 1500) people if emergency situation arises, e.g., medical emergency, fire, et al<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Educating self and others<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Quarterly updates of policy, rules documents<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrated knowledge of documents via written exam (RA, L1, L2, L3)<\/li>\n<li>Mentoring other judges<\/li>\n<li>Seeking mentorship<\/li>\n<li>Attending or giving a seminar on related topics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Leadership<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Public speaking<\/li>\n<li>Team leading<\/li>\n<li>Head judging<\/li>\n<li>Establishing self as a resource for player community<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Organizational skills<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Planning an event for (8, 100, 1500) players<\/li>\n<li>Ensuring appropriate staff is available<\/li>\n<li>Ensuring product is available<\/li>\n<li>Ensuring retail support is adequate (resupply stock at local store, arrange vendor booths, etc)<\/li>\n<li>Managing an event of (8, 100, 1500) players<\/li>\n<li>Managing a team of (1, 5, 60) judges<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Review of self and others<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Setting goals for events<\/li>\n<li>Evaluating own performance at the event and\u00a0in general<\/li>\n<li>Evaluating others&#8217; performance at events<\/li>\n<li>Understanding how to give and receive constructive criticism<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Resumes<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>How do you put all that on a resume?<\/p>\n<p>Note achievements or responsibilities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Planned event for 25 people, had 33 in attendance.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Worked in team of 40 judges to manage event of 900 players.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Manage weekly event schedule with events (2,4,7) days a week.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Use action words to demonstrate skills.<\/p>\n<p>Ask others for advice:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ask players, other judges, or coworkers in case you missed key activities or responsibilities<\/li>\n<li>Be sure to ask some friends or family members who don&#8217;t play Magic<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note the length of time you&#8217;ve been judging (or organizing tournaments) \u2014 judging can provide continuity in your resume, especially if you&#8217;ve worked temporary jobs, switched careers, or had a gap in employment.<\/p>\n<p>Follow general resume-writing advice:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be specific<\/li>\n<li>Be concise<\/li>\n<li>Leave yourself something to talk about if the activity comes up in an interview<\/li>\n<li>Keep this section roughly proportional to other sections of your resume (especially if those sections cover a similar length of time)<\/li>\n<li>Take care to note the things likely to be relevant to the position. Working with children? Focus on your skills in small groups and ensuring an age-appropriate environment. Applying for a management position? Focus on your skills in large groups and your leadership skills.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Interviews<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Most jobs that require resumes will conduct interviews, whether over the phone or in person. How should you handle judging (or other Magic activities) in an interview?<\/p>\n<p>Have a short description of Magic, and judging, that you can rely on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;It&#8217;s got some elements that are similar to chess and some that are similar to fantasy football.&#8221; (Thanks Jeff Darran!)<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Judging is a bit like being a coach or referee\u00a0\u2014 I resolve a lot of rules questions, but I&#8217;m also available to help people learn the rules and improve their skills. I do most of the event planning and clean-up afterwards, too.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Have some examples of specific events that demonstrate your skills.
