I believe text is the worst medium for communicating ideas. It\u2019s boring compared to conversation or video. Also, it\u2019s one-directional without interaction or feedback. The danger being: what makes sense in my head doesn\u2019t necessarily make sense in yours.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">So what does my rant have to do with presentation design? Well, don\u2019t make presentations like articles: one-directional, text-heavy and disengaging, aka boring.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">How?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Well, I\u2019m glad you asked.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Part 1. Fighting Tradition<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">How many times have you thought: \u2018OMG NOT another presentation OR lecture OR meeting\u2026\u2019? I have, a lot. How can anyone understand this slide? Well, ladies and gentlemen, let me break the truth to you:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>The audience is there to listen to you, not read your slides.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>You are the source of text, not the wall behind you.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Shocking! Outrageous!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">I know. So, moving on\u2026<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Part 2. Recipes<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">I will now demonstrate some basic recipes or principles you can start applying today. And I promise you; they will change your (presentation) life.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">Signal to Noise Ratio<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Instead of focusing on theory, let me jump straight to an example.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Imagine I want to discuss the problem of obesity in Croatia (my homeland). I could (and many do), make a slide like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/09\/Slide15.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-343 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/09\/Slide15-300x225.png\" alt=\"Slide15\" width=\"466\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">All data is there, all information. But does it help to convey my message? There is so much going on. Millions of numbers, title, subtitle, logo, pictures, all sorts of colors\u2026 My brain is fried trying to process all this info. And even though your audience might be smarter than I am, their brains will be boiling after a couple of these. Let me help them a bit:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/09\/Slide16.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-344 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/09\/Slide16-300x225.png\" alt=\"Slide16\" width=\"464\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/09\/Slide16-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/09\/Slide16.png 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 464px) 100vw, 464px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Ok, fewer colors for a start, but still tiny, itsy bitsy numbers. Can it be done better? Yes it can!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/09\/Slide17.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-345 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/09\/Slide17-300x225.png\" alt=\"Slide17\" width=\"476\" height=\"357\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/09\/Slide17-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/09\/Slide17.png 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 476px) 100vw, 476px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Ok, now it is clearer, but do I really need that guy and feet and logo (and 3D effect)?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/09\/Slide18.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-346 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/09\/Slide18-300x225.png\" alt=\"Slide18\" width=\"440\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/09\/Slide18-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/09\/Slide18.png 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Easier? So what was done?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The message was made clear: Croatia has roughly double the number of obese people than Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: center\" align=\"center\"><em><span lang=\"EN-US\">Eliminate all that in nonessential. It is not about the data, it is about the message that you want your audience to get.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify\" start=\"2\">\n<li><strong> Going V<\/strong><strong>isual<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">This one is a no brainer, but so many people forget: a picture says a thousand words. As an example, compare those two:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/09\/Slide20.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-347 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/09\/Slide20-300x225.png\" alt=\"Slide20\" width=\"477\" height=\"358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/09\/Slide20-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/09\/Slide20.png 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 477px) 100vw, 477px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/09\/Slide21.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-348 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/09\/Slide21-300x225.png\" alt=\"Slide21\" width=\"469\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/09\/Slide21-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/09\/Slide21.png 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 469px) 100vw, 469px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: justify\">Again, slides are supporting what YOU are presenting, not the other way around.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: center\" align=\"center\"><em><span lang=\"EN-US\">Images create associations and emotions that emphasize your speech. Text on slides does the opposite.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: center\" align=\"center\"><em><span lang=\"EN-US\">Less text, more visuals.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">One \u201cproblem\u201d with visuals is that you need to be more prepared since there is no text to read. But isn\u2019t that the reason you are reading this article anyway?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">A quick tip on preparation: test and practice! I know, it is such a crazy idea!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Here is how I do it: I invite my friend(s) for coffee or dinner and ask them: \u201cWould you mind giving me some feedback on a presentation I am working on?\u201d No one has ever said \u201cno\u201d. Try it. It is another conversation topic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Please use high quality visuals. Nobody likes blurry pictures. They make your work look unprofessional (and lazy). And of course you should try to make sure you have the legal right to use the pictures \u2013 lots of image search websites will allow you to see images which are available under licences like the Creative Commons.<\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify\" start=\"3\">\n<li><strong> Empty Space<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">I have seen so many presenters desperately trying to put as much as possible on their slides. Because, the more the better. Or if we don\u2019t have so many slides, the presentation won\u2019t take as long. Right? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Following that logic we come to the obesity example slide from before. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: center\" align=\"center\"><em><span lang=\"EN-US\">White space lets your lines, text and images breathe. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: center\" align=\"center\"><em><span lang=\"EN-US\">It emphasizes what is important.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: center\" align=\"center\"><em><span lang=\"EN-US\">It turns the attention from the slide to you.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Notice the difference:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/09\/Slide23.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-349 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/09\/Slide23-300x225.png\" alt=\"Slide23\" width=\"464\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/09\/Slide23-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/09\/Slide23.png 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 464px) 100vw, 464px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/10\/Slide24b.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-371 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/10\/Slide24b-300x227.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"445\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/10\/Slide24b-300x227.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/conferences\/files\/2015\/10\/Slide24b.png 724w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 445px) 100vw, 445px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\" style=\"text-align: justify\">That&#8217;s quite some information to process and incorporate for the time being.\u00a0The first three principles talked about eliminating the nonessential. The remaining four rules talk about optimizing what is left.
