I had developed a good sense of the rules from playing for so long (and partially from printing out a giant binder full of the Comprehensive Rules back in middle school, in case we encountered any rules disputes), so I was already a “”rules advisor”” for players at my LGS, but I wanted to increase my knowledge and develop my ability to effectively give rulings.

What challenges have you faced or are you facing to become a better judge?: I don’t play a lot of constructed Magic, so I don’t have as good an understanding as I’d like of the constructed metagame, which can be important for rulings and is especially important in understanding potential lines of play during investigations.

How have you worked to overcome those challenges?: Judging more constructed events has given me a better understanding of the metagame, as has reading more constructed-centric articles on Magic sites and watching more coverage. I’ve also been working on my investigation skills in general by attending workshops about investigations hosted by one of my area L3s.

What is your favorite Magic memory?: My first-ever prerelease, Fifth Dawn, which was also my first-ever organized play event. I lost my first match and was really disappointed to see that on the pairings for the next round, next to my name it just said “”BYE.”” I thought that was the tournament’s way of telling me that I had been eliminated from the prerelease!
