{"id":265,"date":"2012-04-25T12:00:59","date_gmt":"2012-04-25T16:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/jotw\/?p=265"},"modified":"2014-11-20T14:25:57","modified_gmt":"2014-11-20T20:25:57","slug":"judge-of-the-week-13","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/jotw\/judge-of-the-week-13\/","title":{"rendered":"Brian Coval"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week\u2019s Judge of the Week is Brian Coval from Pittsburgh in the United States.\u00a0 Brian began playing <strong>Magic<\/strong> during Ice Age.\u00a0 Brian had a short break during Urza\u2019s Saga, but began playing again during Masques block.\u00a0 It was with Mirrodin that Brian began playing competitively due to the power of affinity.\u00a0 Brian became a level 1 judge during Shards of Alara block, and passed his level 2 exam 6 months later.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/jotw\/files\/2012\/04\/BrianCoval.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4361\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/jotw\/files\/2012\/04\/BrianCoval.jpg\" alt=\"BrianCoval\" width=\"183\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/jotw\/files\/2012\/04\/BrianCoval.jpg 183w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/jotw\/files\/2012\/04\/BrianCoval-176x300.jpg 176w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 183px) 100vw, 183px\" \/><\/a>What interested you in judging?<br \/>\n<\/em>I moved to a new state during Time Spiral block, and the local Tournament Organiser there had a lot of bad practices (e.g. rounding out his event numbers with players who don&#8217;t exist) and a few blatantly illegal practices (e.g.. bribing opponents to concede rating points to him in exchange for packs, and &#8220;drafting&#8221; his limited decks off piles of power commons\/uncommons he keeps behind the counter).\u00a0 The community all knew what he was doing, but nobody knew what to do about it.\u00a0 It was a rigged game, but it was the only game in town.\u00a0 That is when I started pursuing tournament organization, and judging naturally flowed from that about a year later.<\/p>\n<p><em>What is your most memorable judging experience<\/em>?<br \/>\nI was called to a match to settle a dispute between the two players.\u00a0 The dispute was over whether Dave Coulier or Bob Saget hosted &#8220;America&#8217;s Funniest People.&#8221;\u00a0 I ruled that it was Dave Coulier.\u00a0 Player A was about to appeal, but I cut him off by explaining that he was thinking of &#8220;America&#8217;s Funniest Home Videos&#8221; which was in fact hosted by Bob Saget.<\/p>\n<p><em>Favourite <strong>Magic<\/strong> format?<\/em><br \/>\nLegacy.\u00a0 Not even close.<\/p>\n<p><em>Favourite <strong>Magic<\/strong> storyline character?<\/em><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/jotw\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Karn%2C+Silver+Golem&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Karn, Silver Golem<\/a>.\u00a0 He was at his best during Invasion block, after he stopped being a pacifist and before he became a planeswalker.<\/p>\n<p><em>Favourite <strong>Magic<\/strong> card?<\/em><br \/>\nThat&#8217;s a tough one, I don&#8217;t think I could pick one card I like more than the rest.\u00a0 But for most of this year I&#8217;ve been caught in a steamy love triangle with <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/jotw\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Vengevine&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Vengevine<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/jotw\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Wirewood+Symbiote&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Wirewood Symbiote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>What do you do outside of judging?<\/em><br \/>\nMy other major hobby is going to punk and hardcore shows all over the American north-east.\u00a0 I love travelling, and it&#8217;s no coincidence that both my activities of choice force me to do it regularly.<\/p>\n<p><em>If you could play any one game with any one real person &#8211;
