\u00a0This week we head out to the US east coast to find this week\u2019s Judge of the Week: <span class='judge-tooltip'><a href='https:\/\/apps.magicjudges.org\/judges\/dci\/8210177873' >Benjamin (Ben) Bloodworth<\/a><span class='avatar'><img width='200' height='200' src='https:\/\/apps.magicjudges.org\/dci\/avatar?dci=8210177873&size=200'><\/span><\/span>, an L2 from Tallahassee, FL! What are some things that you think other TOs could do to improve their magic community?<br \/>\n<\/strong>I listen to what my players want and if it is possible, I give it to them.\u00a0 It can be tricky at times discerning what the majority of your players want vs what the vocal minority wants, but talking about your plans with your players is very helpful.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/jotw\/files\/2014\/03\/ben-b-lithograph.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2736 alignright\" alt=\"ben b lithograph\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/jotw\/files\/2014\/03\/ben-b-lithograph-300x300.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/jotw\/files\/2014\/03\/ben-b-lithograph-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/jotw\/files\/2014\/03\/ben-b-lithograph-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/jotw\/files\/2014\/03\/ben-b-lithograph.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a>Everyone wants to feel like they&#8217;re part of something bigger than themselves.\u00a0 Running your ideas by your players and getting feedback first makes them feel important.\u00a0 They feel like they&#8217;re contributing to something and so they are more likely to play at your store because they are invested in it.<\/p>\n<p>I think some TOs treat events as though they are doing the players a favor.\u00a0 They don&#8217;t take the event seriously, it starts late, has poor prize support or are condescending to the players.\u00a0 Each event is an opportunity to gain new customers and may be the only impression a new player gets from your store.\u00a0 You want to treat them respectfully and make sure they have a good time so that they are more likely to return to future events.\u00a0 Asking yourself if you were a player, would you be happy with how the event is running is a good starting point.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What motivates you to continue being a judge?<br \/>\n<\/strong>Meeting other judges, interacting with new people, teaching people new mechanics, and ensuring events are run as smoothly as possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is one tip you have for other judges?<br \/>\n<\/strong>Players &#8220;generally&#8221; have a better understanding of the game state than you.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re walking by a match and see something strange, make sure you check everything on the board before interrupting the match to verify that something is legal.\u00a0 You are interrupting the players&#8217; thought process.\u00a0 It can take some time for them to get back on track. They generally know why the board state is the way it is.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the best part about your local Magic community?<br \/>\n<\/strong>We have a lot of really good players.\u00a0 A few of them have been to the Pro Tour more than once.\u00a0 Someone from Tallahassee has gone to the Pro Tour every season since Pro Tour Dark Ascension.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is your favourite non-magic hobby?<\/strong><br \/>\nI enjoy playing video games.\u00a0 The game I play the most is currently League of Legends.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t have a lot of free time so a game that can be played with friends and completed in 30 minutes to an hour fits in well with my schedule.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is your favourite non-judging moment that happened with other judges? <\/strong><br \/>\nEvery judge dinner that I&#8217;ve gone to with other Florida judges.\u00a0 There&#8217;s always good stories and much laughter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the biggest rule-breaking play you\u2019ve ever made as a player?<br \/>\n<\/strong>I was at an SCG Open and cast a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/jotw\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Loxodon+Smiter&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Loxodon Smiter<\/a>\u00a0by tapping three lands.\u00a0 Unfortunately none of the three lands produced white mana.\u00a0 It may or may not be common knowledge but having 3 mana in your pool is not the only requirement to cast a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/jotw\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Loxodon+Smiter&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Loxodon Smiter<\/a>.\u00a0 As it turns out, two mana must be specific different colors, notably white and green.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What has been your favourite magic event that you\u2019ve judged?<br \/>\n<\/strong>2013 Alabama State Championship at Fanatix.\u00a0 It was my first time head judging an event for another store.\u00a0 Fanatix is about an hour and a half away and we often get players from their store at our larger events.\u00a0 I was very glad I could help them out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you could chat with one person, real or fictional, dead or alive, who would it be and why?<br \/>\n<\/strong>The magician Humfrey from the Xanth novels because his magical ability is knowing the answer to any question.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What would you be doing now if Magic no longer existed?<br \/>\n<\/strong>I&#8217;d have more time to hang out with the friends I&#8217;ve made because of Magic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the strangest card interaction you have seen in a tournament? <\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/jotw\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Melira%2C+Sylvok+Outcast&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Melira, Sylvok Outcast<\/a>\u00a0with an activated <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/jotw\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Inkmoth+Nexus&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Inkmoth Nexus<\/a>\u00a0that is equipped with a Sword.\u00a0 It&#8217;s always fun explaining that the Inkmoth doesn&#8217;t deal any damage but the Sword&#8217;s trigger ability still happens.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is your favorite \u201cafter event\u201d story?<\/strong><br \/>\nIt&#8217;s more of a before event story. At FNM the night before a PTQ, Alex Smith &#8211; a local player, stood up in front of all of our players and publicly thanked me for bringing a competitive Magic scene to Tallahassee.\u00a0 He organized a group of local players, got donations from them and purchased a customized playmat and all of the Unhinged full art land lithographs as tokens of appreciation.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/jotw\/files\/2014\/02\/Ben-B-Playmat.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2667 alignleft\" alt=\"Ben B Playmat\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/jotw\/files\/2014\/02\/Ben-B-Playmat-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/jotw\/files\/2014\/02\/Ben-B-Playmat-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/jotw\/files\/2014\/02\/Ben-B-Playmat.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>That may seem more like a tournament organizer story, but I wouldn&#8217;t have been able to bring those events to Tallahassee if I hadn&#8217;t been running competitive events.\u00a0 I couldn&#8217;t have run the competitive events if I weren&#8217;t a judge.\u00a0 It was all possible because of the judge program.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nHow do you have fun during events?<br \/>\n<\/strong>I have fun talking to other judges and interacting with the players.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you were a Planeswalker what would be your ultimate?<\/strong><br \/>\nStarting tournaments on time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you were a creature what would be your creature type?<br \/>\n<\/strong>I would be a Djinn.\u00a0 My players asked me to bring bigger tournaments to Tallahassee and I&#8217;ve fulfilled those wishes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What hobbies do you have outside of Magic?<br \/>\n<\/strong>I own a store and work full time.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t have time for non-magic hobbies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Proudest moment of your Judge life?<\/strong><br \/>\nHead judging events for other stores.\u00a0 Head judging is a huge responsibility.\u00a0 From making sure the tournament starts on time, rounds finish in a timely manner and being the ultimate authority in a rules dispute, the head judge is ultimately responsible for the player&#8217;s enjoyment.\u00a0\u00a0 For another store to trust me to run their event, when I could easily be seen as a competitor to their store, is a huge compliment.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/jotw\/files\/2014\/03\/ben-b-Gideon.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2737\" alt=\"ben b -Gideon\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/jotw\/files\/2014\/03\/ben-b-Gideon.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"278\" \/><\/a>What character in Magic (real or fictional) represents you the best, and why?<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/jotw\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Gideon+Jura&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Gideon Jura<\/a>.\u00a0 I often find myself in leadership positions and creating order where there was chaos.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is there anything else you\u2019d like to add?<\/strong><br \/>\nSupport your local game store.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Two Truths and a Lie<\/strong><br \/>\nTwo of the following statements is true, and one is false.
