Hey friends,
First off — apologies for the recent lack of posts here. Things got busier than expected, and it’s become clear that the work involved with running the blog is going to require some delegation. Apologies, apologies again.
But I have some big news about Area Captains. As Regional Coordinator, my duties are made much simpler by having such an excellent group of judges assisting in the direction and operation of the region. With that said, I never defined term limits for the ACs, and that was an error on my part. The ACs should have the opportunity to step aside, and other judges should have the opportunity to present themselves as viable leaders of the region.
With that in mind, I am opening up applications to become an Area Captain for a term beginning on September 15th, 2017, and ending on September 30th, 2018. That the AC term ends the same time as the RC term ends is not a coincidence. Should there be a new RC at the end of my current term, I wanted to make it easy for the new RC to transition leadership as they see fit.
Area Captain duties include:
1. Providing input on the direction of the region to the Regional Coordinator.
2. Providing feedback on judges to the Regional Coordinator.
3. Helping to organize and run conferences in their area.
4. Helping to mentor and test judges for L1. (L2 Tester is not a requirement to become an AC, though it is helpful.)
Area Captain benefits include:
1. The opportunity to help guide and direct the region.
2. The opportunity to demonstrate advanced leadership and community involvement.
3. The opportunity to request support for projects and area initiatives.
4. Other cool and/or fun stuff as time and opportunity allows.
The regional Areas that require Captains are as follows, by state:
Maryland (Entire State)
North Carolina
* Western NC
* Triad NC
* Central NC
* Western NC
* Triad NC
* Central NC
Tennessee
* Chattanooga
* Knoxville
* Nashville
Virginia
* Charlottesville
* Richmond
* Roanoke
* Virginia Beach
Washington D.C. (Entire State)
West Virginia (Entire State)
This opportunity is open to judges of all levels. If you’re an L1 who wants to be an Area Captain, you’ll need to be able to demonstrate your role as a leader in your area, especially as a leader of higher-level judges.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me, and I’ll do my best to address your concerns.
The deadline for applications is Friday, September 8th. Please note that I will be at GP Washington DC on September 2-3 if you have questions about the AC position.
As always, thank you for all that you do to make Magic magical in the region. I’ll see you soon.
