5 Urban Myths about Prereleases

Hello everyone! It’s almost that time of the year, when we can finally sling brand new cards at each other with the craziest 40+ cards concoctions we can come up with: it’s Prerelease time!

This time, we’d like to celebrate by debunking the 5 craziest theories about Prereleases our lurking informants have intercepted around the Multiverse! If you encounter strange Phyrexian agents spreading these facts, feel free to alert your trusty and Planeswalky judge, we’ll happily inform them!

Myth #1: You cannot alter your main deck

It happens even to the best: you open a great blue planeswalker, build the coolest blue-black control deck ever seen in your shop, but after two games you realize that your green-red cards actually spell “Y-O-U-W-I-N” when you put them in a deck.

Worry not! At the Prerelease, you are always welcome to rebuild your deck from scratch from your pool, and continue playing with this new arrangement. Heck, sometimes I simply cannot choose and end up building TWO decks with the cards I opened, and keep switching from one match to the other just to try them all!

Myth #2: You cannot ask for help during deckbuilding

You know what’s the best way to avoid having to make though deck choices? Asking someone else to pick for you! When you are building your deck at the beginning of the day, feel free to consult your neighbour or your friends – of course, wait for them to be available and not busy building as well!

At Prereleases, talking and brainstorming ideas during deck construction is not only allowed, but encouraged! This way also the less experienced players can get a good start and guidance in this crucial part of the tournament. Just remember: when you play, you are on your own, no outside help is allowed there!

Myth #3: You can get Game Losses for small mistakes

Some people get a bit carried away with competition, and start mixing what happens at the Pro Tour and what goes on at Casual Night. Prereleases are events made to have fun and enjoy the new set, so we hold people to a slightly lower standard than at a Grand Prix with $10000 as prizes. If you make a small mistake, such as accidentally playing 39 cards, or drawing one card too many without noticing, you would never be penalized with a Game Loss. We save our heavy weapons for those who create potentially serious issues, not for the goofy player who forgot to remove his sideboard cards!

Myth #4: You can only use 8 packs in a Two-Headed Giant Prerelease

We told you we wanted you to enjoy the new cards as much as possible, and we weren’t lying! That’s why for your Two-Headed giant Prerelease, both players in each team are provided the very same kit that comes in normal single-player events. This means that you have a grand total of 12 packs to build your two decks, while in regular (non-Prerelease) Two-Headed Giant events, you would get only 8. 50% extra more chances of opening that sweet, sweet bomb!

Myth #5: They’re not for beginners

This is pure non-sense – the whole point of a Prerelease is to have a giant celebration of the new set where everyone can have fun, from the newest player who started the week before at the Open League, to the most seasoned veteran. Everyone’s there to play, and if you need anything you can just raise your hand and shout “Judge!”. We’ll be there for you.

See you this weekend, and may you be found worthy… if you like Lazotep!
