L2 Mentoring Project – Status update september 2018

Hello judges!

The L2 Mentoring Project is going great – so great that we’re running out of mentors for the time being! That is a sign that a lot of judges want to go for L2 and be more involved.

We currently have 4 candidates in the project, with several more on their way. With this much popularity we’re looking for more mentors to guide the candidates through the program.

This time around, we want to give you a quick overview on what the candidate has to go through in order to complete this program. We’ve set it up so that the candidate and their mentor will talk for about 1 hour on a weekly basis. The weeks look like this:

  • Week 1 – Introduction

Here we’re just getting to know each other. What the candidate’s goals are, where they are from, what their favourite food is and etc. At the end of each session we let the candidate know what next week is about, so that they can prepare themselves.

  • Week 2 – Hard Rules Interaction (Casting Spells)

All Crazy Teens Have Legally Tried Magic Pills. When you know this codeword, you know how to cast spells. We’ll go through some easy scenarios, and some less easy scenarios.

  • Week 3 – IPG (Philosophy)

Knowing why we give penalties at Comp. REL events is essential to the L2 Judge. During this week your knowledge about the IPG has an easy start.

  • Week 4 – Reviews

Reviews is one way to improve each other to be better. Being able to give constructive feedback to other judges are a large part in the life of the L2 Judge, so we’ll dedicate an entire week just for that.

  • Week 5 – IPG (Game Play Errors)

Game Play Errors make up the majority of infractions in an event. When do we back up? Is it a detrimental missed trigger? How many pizza-slizes is it appropriate to use as counters before things start to get messy?

  • Week 6 – Hard Rules Interactions (Layers)

OK, we’re halfway through the program, so it’s time to get serious. Layers is very important to understand, and often it’s complete greek (Eskil can tell you about it) until you have the “aha”-moment where everything makes sense.

  • Week 7 – IPG (Tournament Errors / Unsporting Conduct)

Even though these infractions appear less often than Game Play Error, they are no less important. What should you do when someone has a sleeve in another color? How late can a player be before they get a Game Loss or even a Match Loss? Is it unsporting to ask another player for a date?

  • Week 8 – Hard Rules Interactions (Replacement Effects)

Another “you understand nothing” until you realize everything is so simple. Take care to not enter the graveyard at this point, especially so if a card instructs you to do otherwise.

  • Week 9 – Hard Rules Interactions (Copy Effects)

What exactly happens when you want to have your Clever Impersonator enter the battlefield as Garruk, the Veil Cursed that your opponent controls? Find out this week!

  • Week 9 – Hard Rules Interactions (Copy Effects)

What exactly happens when you want to have your Clever Impersonator enter the battlefield as Garruk, the Veil Cursed that your opponent controls? Find out this week!

  • Week 9 – Hard Rules Interactions (Copy Effects)

What exactly happens when you want to have your Clever Impers… oh, we’ve been through this already. Let’s not copy it again.

  • Week 10 – Mentoring and Testing New Judges

When you pass your L2 test you’re ready to go Head Judge those PPTQs. But that’s not all that comes with a L2-certification. You should now mentor those who want to join our glorious ranks as L1, and this week we’ll cover what you should be on the look out for.

  • Week 11 – Larger Tournaments and Logistics

Have you ever wanted to judge at a Grand Prix? This week you’ll get to know some behind-the-scenes information from those who have done it before you.

  • Week 12 – Program Review

That’s it! You’re done! You are now ready to check of those last checkboxes in order to take the L2-test. But before that, we want you to say your opinion on the program you’ve just been through. Was it too long or too short? Was there any disagreement on how many pizza slizes you could use as counters? Anything we can improve so that the next candidate can have a better time?

If you’re a L2+ and want to contribute to get more L2’s in our region, please apply to the project asap.

If you are a L1 and you’ve been thinking about going for L2 soon-ish, please do send us an e-mail so we can start discussions. You can reach us at NordicL2Mentors@gmail.com.
