The reason is soon told.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Limited, we are talking about a creature with a good body, tough to block, and with an ability that creates card advantage (Did you know that card advantage lets you win matches?).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Constructed, a 4\/4 for five mana it rarely deserves attention. Goblin Dark-Dwellers earns the spotlights due to his practically ensured 2X1, and that we don\u2019t have to spend mana to cast the targetted spell. It comes naturally to insert this card in a Jeskai deck, both because it follows the deck\u2019s philosophy (to stack advantage with multiple 2X1 and 3X1), and for the quality and quantity of targetable spells (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/playerexperience\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Kolaghan%26%238217%3Bs+Command&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Kolaghan&#8217;s Command<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/playerexperience\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Crackling+Doom&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Crackling Doom<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/playerexperience\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Abzan+Charm&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Abzan Charm<\/a>). But also other decks can benefit from it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/magiccards.info\/scans\/en\/ogw\/110.jpg\" alt=\"Goblin Dark-Dwellers\" width=\"312\" height=\"445\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Talking about rules, let&#8217;s start saying that multiple instances of Menace are redundant. A Goblin Dark-Dweller equipped with a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/playerexperience\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Chitinous+Cloak&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Chitinous Cloak<\/a> has Menace two times, but this means that \u201cit can be blocked by two or more creatures\u201d &#8211; like if the creature had a single instance of Menace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Goblin Dark-Dwellers, with <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/playerexperience\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Snapcaster+Mage&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Snapcaster Mage<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/playerexperience\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Jace%2C+Telepath+Unbound&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Jace, Telepath Unbound<\/a>, generate a trio of cards that allow us to play again an instant or sorcery card from our graveyard. Each of these cards does it with different modes: a certain play can be legal for all the three cards, or just for some of them. Let\u2019s examine in depth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>1) With the ability of Snapcaster\/Jace\/Dark-Dwellers I\u2019ve targeted a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/playerexperience\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Lightning+Bolt&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Lightning Bolt<\/a> in my graveyard. My opponent, in response, wants to exile it with <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/playerexperience\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Scavenging+Ooze&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Scavenging Ooze<\/a>, and says that I loose the possibility to cast it. Is it true?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>For all three cards: Yes.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All the members of the trio need a target, so you point it when you declare the ability. The opponent responds to the ability exiling the Bolt. Seen that the target is no more legal, the ability gets countered on resolution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2) My opponent controls <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/playerexperience\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Thalia%2C+Guardian+of+Thraben&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Thalia, Guardian of Thraben<\/a>. If I cast a spell from my graveyard, will I have to pay the additional 1?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>For all three cards: Yes.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thalia imposes to pay an additional cost on every non-creature spell. Even if the spell is casted from the graveyard, the additional cost is always considered and payed. In Goblin Dark-Dwellers\u2019s specific case, even if we don\u2019t need to pay the spell\u2019s mana cost, we have to pay any other additional cost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>3) I have <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/playerexperience\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Ruinous+Path&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Ruinous Path<\/a> in my graveyard, can I cast it with Awaken?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u25ba <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">with <\/span><b>Snapcaster NO<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Flashback it\u2019s an alternative cost, like Awaken. It is not possible to cast a spell applying more than an alternative cost, you can apply only one. If we apply Flashback, we cannot apply Awaken.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u25ba with <\/span><b>Jace YES<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. We are casting the spell from our graveyard instead of our hand, but this has no consequences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u25ba with <\/span><b>Dark-Dwellers NO<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Casting a spell \u201cwithout paying its mana cost\u201d is an alternative cost. Like Snapcaster, we can\u2019t apply a further alternative cost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>4) I have <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/playerexperience\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Boulder+Salvo&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Boulder Salvo<\/a> in my graveyard, can I cast it with Surge?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Surge is an alternative cost, exactly like Awaken. So:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u25ba with <\/span><b>Snapcaster NO<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. If we apply Flashback, we can\u2019t apply Surge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u25ba with <\/span><b>Jace YES<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. We are casting the spell from the graveyard instead than our hand, but this has no consequences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u25ba with <\/span><b>Dark-Dwellers NO<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The converted mana cost of Boulder Salvo is five, not two (the CMC of a spell is always calculated referring to what is shown on the top right of the card, not to how much you actually pay for it). Boulder Salvo is not a legal target for Dark-Dwellers\u2019s ability. Even if it was, we would fall again in the \u201cyou can\u2019t apply two alternative costs\u201d case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>5) I have <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/playerexperience\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Living+End&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Living End<\/a> in my graveyard, can I play it?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u25ba<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with <\/span><b>Snapcaster NO<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Living End has an undefined mana cost. Snapcaster gives to Living End an undefined flashback cost. Seen that is impossible to pay an undefined cost, the spell\u2019s launch process can\u2019t be completed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u25ba with <\/span><b>Jace NO<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Like above, it\u2019s not possible to pay an undefined cost, so the spell can\u2019t be cast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u25ba with <\/span><b>Dark-Dwellers YES<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Seen that we are launching a spell \u201cwithout paying its mana cost\u201d, the fact that the cost is undefined it\u2019s not an obstacle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>6) I cast a \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/playerexperience\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Lightning+Bolt&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Lightning Bolt<\/a> from the graveyard, my opponent counters it with <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/playerexperience\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Remand&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Remand<\/a>. Where does the Bolt go?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u25ba<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with <\/span><b>Snapcaster, in exile<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. A spell launched with Flashback always goes to exile, instead than any other zone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u25ba with <\/span><b>Jace, in hand<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Jace only exiles spells that go to the graveyard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u25ba with <\/span><b>Dark-Dwellers, in hand<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Dark-Dwellers only exiles spells that go to the graveyard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>7) I have <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/playerexperience\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Boom+%2F%2F+Bust&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Boom \/\/ Bust<\/a> in the graveyard. Can I cast Bust?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>For all three cards: Yes.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With Snapcaster and Jace, we have little to add: We pay 5R and cast Bust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Referring to Goblin Dark-Dwellers, a split card passes the test \u201cThe mana cost is less than 3?\u201d if at least one of the 2 halves has a mana cost lower than 3. Seen that this is true for Boom, Boom\/Bust it\u2019s a legal target for the ability of Dark-Dwellers. When we decide to cast Boom\/Bust, we choose to launch Bust, and we don\u2019t have to pay mana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>8) My opponent controls <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/playerexperience\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Teferi%2C+Mage+of+Zhalfir&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir<\/a>. Can I cast a Bolt from my graveyard?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u25ba <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">with <\/span><b>Snapcaster YES<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. We need to be in our mainphase, with an empty stack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u25ba with <\/span><b>Jace YES<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. We need to be in our mainphase, with an empty stack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u25ba with <\/span><b>Dark-Dwellers NO<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Dark-Dwellers\u2019s ability would let us cast the Bolt from the graveyard during the resolution of it, in a moment where the ability is still on the stack, therefore it\u2019s not empty. Teferi intervenes, realizes that we are trying to cast a spell while the stack it\u2019s not empty, and stops us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>9) Can I cast a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/playerexperience\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Burst+Lightning&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Burst Lightning<\/a> from my graveyard paying its kicker cost?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>For all three cards: Yes. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kicker is an additional cost so we will be able to pay for it while casting the spell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>10) Can I cast a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/playerexperience\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Fireball&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Fireball<\/a> from my graveyard to kill my opponent which is at 5 life?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u25ba<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with <\/span><b>Snapcaster and Jace YES<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The flashback cost is equal to the mana cost and casting a card from your graveyard refers to its mana cost as well, so in both cases we will be able to cast the Fireball for {R}{5}, if we have enough mana available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u25ba with <\/span><b>Dark-Dwellers NO<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
