\u201cplease leave me alone\u201d is not what we desire when we coach somebody else, so let\u2019s pay attention to avoid invading other people \u201cspace\u201d.<br \/>\nEvaluation is the most dangerous. \u201cWho the hell are you?\u201d is not a good beginning of a relationship, right?<br \/>\nLet\u2019s do our best to first establish the relationship, aligning our expectations with the expectations of the other person (whether we are the giver or the receiver), and then we can feel safe in offering the feedback.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">OK, this is the introduction to the concept of feedback.<br \/>\nBelow you have the introductions to some initiatives.<br \/>\nThe goal is that you are aware of their existence.<br \/>\nMaybe you know about other similar initiatives, or you have comments about any of them.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">GPHJ evaluation of L3s<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-552\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2017\/04\/Evaluation.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2017\/04\/Evaluation.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2017\/04\/Evaluation-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2017\/04\/Evaluation-125x94.jpg 125w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">For 2017, Grand Prix head judges have been requested to give an evaluation of the L3s \/ team leaders at their GPs.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s a performance evaluation, and is based on four categories: outstanding, good, average, detrimental. You can find other comments in the March summary of the GPHJ list.<br \/>\nThis evaluation was created after the reaction of the L3 community to the end of 2016 maintenance test, where GPHJs were requested to rate all L3s; some L3s were surprised by how they got evaluated, so it was decided to gather data during the entire year, with the goal to have a better evaluation.<br \/>\nA *personal* comment: the L3 maintenance at the end of 2016 was created to answer the very frequent request from the Leadership meeting; \u201cevaluation of L3s\u201d was one of the three most discussed topics in 2016. It was specifically asked to evaluate the *quality* of performance, more than the quantity of events.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">GPHJ feedback to L3s<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-553\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2017\/04\/Feedback.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2017\/04\/Feedback.jpg 639w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2017\/04\/Feedback-300x141.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2017\/04\/Feedback-125x59.jpg 125w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In parallel to the private evaluation, the desire is to offer direct feedback to as many L3s as possible, about their performance on the floor at GPs.<br \/>\nIf you will see an increase of reviews (or just simple talks at the end of your Grand Prix events), it means that this initiative is producing some results.<br \/>\nSame, if you notice an increase in the depth of those talks\/reviews, it\u2019s a good sign.<br \/>\nIf you are attending or you attended a Grand Prix, you can expect a review from your HJ or one of the Appeal judges. It can be short or long, positive or negative, deep or superficial; in any case, it can be useful, and has the goal of helping you in your future events.<br \/>\nA *personal* comment: I have been L3 for several years, and I noticed that in the last few years (which means \u201cafter half of us got to L3\u201d), the reviews have shifted from \u201cwe help each other to get better\u201d to \u201cI should pay attention, I must avoid saying anything that can make the other person feel attacked\u201d. I believe we may benefit from a higher level of mutual support, exactly like we benefitted from it when we were L2s wanting to become L3s.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Red Cross \u2013 Mentoring<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-555\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2017\/04\/Mentoring.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"633\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2017\/04\/Mentoring.jpg 758w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2017\/04\/Mentoring-284x300.jpg 284w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2017\/04\/Mentoring-118x125.jpg 118w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Red Cross is a \u201cfeedback pull\u201d system, meaning that it is used only by people who ask for it.<br \/>\nOne part is about mentoring, where a judge asks to have a mentor on a specific area; after the relationship is created, they make focused efforts together.<br \/>\nIn the first wave (February\/March), we had four couples of judges formed.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Red Cross \u2013 Evaluation<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-551\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2017\/04\/Direct-evaluation.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2017\/04\/Direct-evaluation.png 800w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2017\/04\/Direct-evaluation-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2017\/04\/Direct-evaluation-125x70.png 125w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Red Cross is a \u201cfeedback pull\u201d system, meaning that it is used only by people who ask for it.<br \/>\nAnother part is about evaluation, where a judge asks to be evaluated by the advanced role judges; evaluations are collected and summarized, without a direct communication with each \u201cevaluator\u201d, unless any of the evaluator takes the initiative.<br \/>\nIn the first wave (February\/March), we had four judges asking for evaluation, and we are in the process of collecting information from advanced role judges (33% offered their opinion so far); the plan is to complete the collection by the middle of April and summarize and have any needed follow up in the second half of April.<br \/>\nThe second wave (April\/May) already has three judges who asked for evaluation.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Seminars and books<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-549\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2017\/04\/Book.jpg\" width=\"392\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2017\/04\/Book.jpg 326w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2017\/04\/Book-196x300.jpg 196w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2017\/04\/Book-82x125.jpg 82w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 392px) 100vw, 392px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">I actually studied the topic, and presented a seminar at the European L3 conference in February.<br \/>\nThe study, as we were doing at school, was based on books, and the one I would like to recommend you to read is this one:<br \/>\nTitle: Thanks for the feedback<br \/>\nAuthors: Douglas Stone and Sheila Heen<br \/>\nEditor: Penguin Books<br \/>\nI read it, I underlined the concepts that looked to me more important, I read them again, I discussed with \u201cschoolmates\u201d and then I took the \u201cexam\u201d; yes, exactly like at school.<br \/>\nIn the past, Wizards sent a couple of books to L4+. Today, my recommendation is that Regional Coordinators get *one* copy, to be transferred among interested L3s. In Italy, we are doing it.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Head judge, appeal judge and team leader evaluation<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-550\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2017\/04\/Boss.jpg\" width=\"595\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2017\/04\/Boss.jpg 520w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2017\/04\/Boss-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2017\/04\/Boss-298x300.jpg 298w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2017\/04\/Boss-125x125.jpg 125w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 595px) 100vw, 595px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Just like the head judge gives evaluation and feedback to the L3s and the team leaders, any judge is able (and encouraged) to give an evaluation and to offer advice to their head judge, appeal judges and team leaders.<br \/>\nThe form is an anonym Google form;
