{"id":650,"date":"2018-08-12T11:40:21","date_gmt":"2018-08-12T11:40:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/?p=650"},"modified":"2018-08-12T11:40:21","modified_gmt":"2018-08-12T11:40:21","slug":"gp-hometown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/2018\/08\/12\/gp-hometown\/","title":{"rendered":"GP Hometown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>CIAO<\/strong> everyone<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">Another week, and another tournament!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">This was a special one for me, as it took place in my hometown: TURIN<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large\"><i><b>Grand Prix TURIN 2018<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magic.wizards.com\/en\/events\/coverage\/gptur18\">Grand Prix Turin 2018<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">\u00a0was my local Grand Prix, not only because it\u2019s an Italian event, but also because it\u2019s my hometown event! I grew up in a small town next to Turin, I went to university in the city of Turin and I also lived there for a few years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">I\u2019ve been living in the center of Italy for a dozen of years, and I\u2019m now about to move back to next to Turin, so this Grand Prix was indeed like a starter at the beginning of a meal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">Finally, for once, instead of taking a long flight, I could just take a train.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-651\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2018\/08\/Resized-Train-e1533996264634.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: large\"><u><b>Italy<\/b><\/u><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Italy\">Italy<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">\u00a0is a small country of the Southern part of Europe, a peninsula in the temperate Mediterranean sea, famous for history, food, fashion, arts\u2026 and also famous for their politicians and different concept of \u201cabiding the law\u201d in the last century, as the expression \u201cpizza, mafia and mandolino\u201d says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">Though small, Italy is a country where tourists are able to find tons of attractions; it\u2019s the country with the most <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_Heritage_Sites_by_country\">UNESCO heritage sites<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">\u00a0and it was home of several eternal artists like Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raffaello.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">Though the appearance of Italian cities may not show it, here you have a few lines from Wikipedia:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"font-size: large\">Italy has the third largest nominal GDP in the Eurozone and the eighth largest in the world. As an advanced economy, the country has the sixth-largest worldwide national wealth, and it is ranked third for its central bank gold reserve. Italy has a very high level of human development, and it stands among the top countries for life expectancy. The country plays a prominent role in regional and global economic, military, cultural and diplomatic affairs&#8230; Italy is a founding and leading member of the European Union and a member of numerous international institutions, including the UN, NATO, the OECD, the OSCE, the WTO, the G7, the G20, the Union for the Mediterranean, the Council of Europe, Uniting for Consensus, the Schengen Area and many more. As a reflection of its cultural wealth, Italy is home to 54 World Heritage Sites, the most in the world, and is the fifth-most visited country.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">I like to say to friends, \u201cif I become Galactic Emperor, I will base Italian economy on tourism, with top quality services\u201d, but it seems very unlikely to happen, so please come to enjoy our wonderful art\u2026 with a good amount of patience for the not so wonderful traffic and public transportation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">Here you have two soldiers, at one of the Turin train stations, with the characteristic hat of the \u201cAlpini\u201d, the famous and proud \u201cSoldiers of the Alpes\u201d (extra: I was one of them).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-652\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2018\/08\/Resized-Soldiers-e1533996394796.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"338\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: large\"><u><b>The tournament<\/b><\/u><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">I often write about judging tournaments, but there are also other roles that we may have at tournaments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">I believe that during the entire weekend in Turin, I haven\u2019t touched any Magic card and I haven\u2019t answered any rules or game communication question in four days of work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">Thursday, I entered into an empty tournament room, with \u201cempty\u201d meaning \u201cno tables, no chairs, only the walls and the roof\u201d and I exit when everything was ready for the next day. A day of measuring distances, making signs on the floor, opening tables and putting them in line, moving chairs, unfolding tablecloths. When we went out from that room, all the tables were ready for dinner\u2026. Play, I meant play!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">Friday, Saturday and Sunday, I coordinated the activities of an invisible team, called Kickstart. The task of that team is, every 30 minutes, to prepare each single side event (the scheduled ones, not the on demand events) and give it to the head judge, \u201cready to go\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"font-size: large\">Ready to go\u201d means \u201chere is your pairing board, here is your scorekeeper, here are ALL your players ready for round 1\u201d, a couple of minutes *before* the announced starting time, so that all the scheduled events could start exactly in time, like Japanese trains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">I consider it a quite special team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">If you plan it well, it\u2019s easy, it\u2019s enjoyable, it has a good rhythm, and it\u2019s very satisfying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">But beware, if you don\u2019t plan it well or you start getting behind the rhythm, it can be a real disaster, for both you and all the events that will start late, and later, and later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">If you want an interesting challenge at your next Grand Prix, ask to be assigned one day to the Kickstart team; if you like logistics, you will enjoy it a lot!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-653\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2018\/08\/Tournament-labels-e1533996558256.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: large\"><u><b>Curious moments<\/b><\/u><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-654\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2018\/08\/Resized-Piazza-Castello-e1533996689105.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">The \u201ccentral plaza\u201d, also known as \u201cthe plaza of the castle\u201d, with the royal palace in a corner, and the roads to the train station and to the river on two sides\u2026 with the top of the Mole Antonelliana behind the buildings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-655\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2018\/08\/Resized-Royal-palace-e1533996915129.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">The entrance of the royal palace, which is also the place where you can find the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shroud_of_Turin\">holy shroud<\/a>\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">, one of the most important symbols of the Christian religion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-656\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2018\/08\/Resized-Mole-Antonelliana-e1533996959846.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"338\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mole_Antonelliana\">Mole Antonelliana<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\">, symbol of Turin skyline, like the Colosseum for Rome and the Tour Eiffel for Paris.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-657\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2018\/08\/Resized-Facade-e1533997004611.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">Just a normal building of the city center. Have I already told you that Torino had been the first capital of Italy and that it\u2019s my hometown? ^___^<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-658\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/riccardotessitori\/files\/2018\/08\/Resized-Savoiardi-e1533997035721.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"338\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">Flying out from Turin, I was very surprised to see (for the first time in an airport lounge) the cookies called \u201csavoiardi\u201d, one of the fundamental ingredients of the cake called Tiramisu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: large\"><u><b>Time to go back home<\/b><\/u><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">It\u2019s Sunday evening, the judge party has ended and it\u2019s 2AM.
