{"id":239,"date":"2015-10-09T06:47:09","date_gmt":"2015-10-09T06:47:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/rules\/?page_id=239"},"modified":"2025-11-21T05:16:59","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T02:16:59","slug":"mtr2-9","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/rules\/mtr2-9\/","title":{"rendered":"MTR 2.9 Appeals to the Head Judge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;margin-bottom: 0px\">If a player disagrees with a judge\u2019s ruling, they may appeal the ruling to the Head Judge.<\/p>\n<div class=\"alert alert-info\" role=\"alert\"> <em>The &#8216;right to appeal&#8217; is the right to have your case heard by the most authoritative judge at the event.\u00a0 There is no &#8216;right to a second opinion&#8217;.\u00a0 If the first judge to take your call is the Head Judge, then you just had your case heard by the most authoritative judge at the event. Additionally, judges should not go out of there way to protect the &#8216;chain of appeals&#8217; because there is no such chain.\u00a0 In single-judge events, this is a bit awkward because there is only a single judge.\u00a0 There is no other judge to appeal to.\u00a0 However, Judges are expected to take the necessary steps to ensure their ruling is correct.\u00a0 If the judge has doubts in their ruling, it is correct and proper to take the appropriate steps to remove those doubts<\/em><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In larger, Premier-level tournaments (such as World Championship, Pro Tour, Limited Championship, Spotlight Series, and Regional Championships), with prior approval, the Head Judge may designate additional Appeals Judges who are also empowered to hear appeals. They will be wearing the same uniform as the Head Judge.<\/p>\n<div class=\"alert alert-info\" role=\"alert\"> <em>These other judges are called Appeals Judges, and often have the same or similar certifications as the event Head Judge. Additionally, in non-premier level events, the HJ may designate a backup to handle appeals while they are on break, or in the bathroom or in an investigation. <\/em><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;margin-bottom: 0px\">Players may not appeal before the full ruling is made by the responding Floor Judge.<\/p>\n<div class=\"alert alert-info\" role=\"alert\"> <em>Players are required to be respectful to judges, which includes letting them finish their ruling before disagreeing with them. Players appealing a judge based on perception of the Judge or how they think the judge is going to rule undermines that judge\u2019s authority, and can be considered <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/rules\/ipg4-1\/\">Unsporting Conduct \u2014 Minor<\/a>.<\/em><\/div>\n<p>Rulings made by the Head Judge or designated Appeals Judges are final.<\/p>\n<div class=\"alert alert-info\" role=\"alert\"> \u00a0<em>No, you can&#8217;t appeal to Wizards or whatever the current Judge Organization is.\u00a0 Yes, it has been tried.<\/em><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If a player disagrees with a judge\u2019s ruling, they may appeal the ruling to the Head Judge.
