If you’re playing unsleeved or with sleeves that aren’t completely opaque, then you must use a checklist card for each double-faced card in your deck. Each checklist card should be clearly marked as to which double-faced card it represents. Keep the double-faced cards with your deck, and swap it for the checklist card whenever it’s in a public zone. (In play, exiled or in a graveyard)

If you’re using checklist cards and are going to sleeve your double-faced cards, use a different color of sleeve. (Clear sleeves work well, as you won’t need to unsleeve the card, flip it, and resleeve. Another option is to have two copies of each double-faced card for each checklist card in your deck.)

If you want to have the actual double-faced cards in your deck, then your deck must be sleeved in completely opaque sleeves. Many colored sleeves are not completely opaque, and thus will not work for this purpose. A good way to check this is to sleeve a normal card, then see if you can make out the white dot on the back of a card. Another way to check is to put a regular Magic card in the sleeve backwards and check if you can see anything.

If you have double-faced cards in your deck, you may have additional copies sleeved in different sleeves with the night side of the card showing. These cards should be kept with your deck.

Playing with Double-Faced cards requires a little bit of extra care and attention, but now you can enjoy playing these exciting new cards worry-free!

Today’s Rules Tip was written by Charlotte Sable, a level 2 judge from Ontario, Canada.

Innistrad introduces double-faced cards to Magic, and with them some difficulty with logistics of playing them, so here’s a quick guide to how to use double-faced cards.
