I liked this little trick so much I decided to skip Scry’s day this week (since it’s a returning mechanic) and cover another fun Bestow interaction. Savage Summoning is a rare from M14. It allows you to cast the next creature spell of the turn as though it had Flash, make it uncounterable, and also make it a little stronger when it comes down. But here’s the question: Can you use it with the Bestow cards? You might think “No, of course not! They’re Auras when you bestow them, not creatures!”

But hey! You totally can. As you begin the action of casting the Bestow card, it’s still a creature card in your hand/graveyard/library/what-have-you. Since it’s a creature card, and you’re going to be casting it (even though it won’t be a creature spell when you do- the game can’t look that far ahead), it meets the criteria for Savage Summoning. So, you can pay G and cast your Summoning to start Flashing in Bestow-auras. They’ll also be completely uncounterable (they can’t be countered by spells or abilities because of Summoning, and they can’t be countered for illegal targets because Bestow will just make them resolve as a creature), and they’ll come down with a +1/+1 counter. That counter won’t do much good at first (it won’t transfer to the enchanted creature in any way), but when the aura falls off and becomes a creature again, it’ll be a little bit stronger.

EDIT: The Comprehensive Rules have changed since we wrote this post! While it used to work, it no longer does- there is now a step in the spell-casting process where the legality of the spell is checked. This new step throws a wrench into things, because at that time you’ve got an Aura spell on the stack during a time you normally couldn’t cast one, and nothing has given you permission to cast an Aura spell at this time, so the game backs up to before you cast it.

Surprise!
