<\/p>Few things in the game of Magic make me as sad as getting a manifested creature only to discover it is a creature that dies when it is turned face up. That’s right… if you manifest your Hangerback Walker it will immediately die when it is turned face up. Hangerback Walker has a converted mana cost of 0 because X (or XX in this case) cannot be anything but 0 outside the stack. This means you will not be able to pay to put counters on it while turning it face up (and even if you could, the Walker isn’t entering the battlefield when it turns face up, so it wouldn’t get counters regardless).<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy not activate its ability after you turn it face up?\u201d Great question. Even though turning a creature face-up does not use the stack, and you retain priority after it’s turned face up, state based actions are actually checked after it turns face up, before you get priority. When this check happens, you have a creature with 0 toughness and as a result, your Hangarback goes to the ‘yard before you, or anyone else, can do anything about it.<\/p>\n
If you are adamant about keeping your Walker, you may want to put some +1\/+1 counters on it while it is face down. This would better ensure your Walker lives and gets you the value that you deserve!<\/p>\n
