Blood Moon<\/a>, got an update<\/strong>, well not really but Sagas got their rules update from FIN’s release. A Saga Land namely Urza’s Saga<\/a>, will have its interactions with Moon effects updated.<\/p>\n Let’s say we have an Urza’s Saga<\/a> in play at Chapter 2 with both its Chapter 1 and 2 triggered abilities resolved. A Blood Moon<\/a> comes into play. It would lose its chapter abilities and would not be subjected to the SBA check to sacrifice it due to having no Chapter abilities. The turn-based action of adding a Lore counter at the beginning of the first main phase would not happen either.<\/p>\n How about the abilities or Urza’s Saga<\/a>?<\/strong> Actually Urza’s Saga<\/a> can tap for This is due to CR 305.7<\/a> If an effect sets a land\u2019s subtype to one or more of the basic land types, the land no longer has its old land type. It loses all abilities generated from its rules text, its old land types, and any copiable effects affecting that land, and it gains the appropriate mana ability for each new basic land type. Note that this doesn\u2019t remove any abilities that were granted to the land by other effects.<\/p>\n How about with Blood Moon<\/a> in play and we play an Urza’s Saga<\/a>?<\/strong><\/p>\n Urza’s Saga<\/a> will just ETB with no Chapter abilities, no TBA of adding Lore counters at beginning of precombat main phase and is an Enchantment Mountain that taps for As per CR714.3a<\/a>, the Urza’s Saga will still etb with a lore counter with Blood Moon in play but the tap to add In this final segment of the Sun & Moon series, we come to look at the final piece of the puzzle:Blood Moon<\/a>. You can refer to the All about Alpine Moon<\/a> or The Blood Sun<\/a> by clicking on their respective hyperlinks.<\/p>\n So let\u2019s start with its most updated Oracle Text: Also the Gatherer rulings: Before we delve deeper into the actual interactions between Blood Moon<\/a> and other cards, let\u2019s see which segment of the Layer system does Blood Moon<\/a> uses:<\/p>\n CR 613.1d<\/a> Layer 4: Type-changing effects are applied. These include effects that change an object\u2019s card type, subtype, and\/or supertype.<\/strong><\/p>\n This means Blood Moon<\/a> will make all nonbasic lands into Mountains. These lands loses all their other land types and abilities but keep their other non-land types and supertypes. The lands will remain being nonbasic lands despite gaining a basic land type.<\/p>\n Other Scenarios where there are type changing\/adding involved<\/strong><\/p>\n Prismatic Omen<\/a> and Blood Moon<\/a> both work in Layer 4 hence we use the timestamp system. If Blood Moon<\/a> is in play first then Prismatic Omen<\/a> will override Blood Moon<\/a> to make all lands you control have all basic land types and vice versa.<\/p>\n Do take note that Blood Moon<\/a>‘s type setting effect will still cause nonbasic lands to lose their other printed abilities. They will be able to however tap for any colour if Prismatic Omen<\/a> has the latest timestamp as they continue to have every basic land type.<\/p>\n Interaction with Lands with abilities Your Shockland will enter the battlefield untapped as Blood Moon<\/a> removes Shockland\u2019s ability that makes it enter the battlefield tapped unless you pay 2 life. You cannot pay 2 life even if you want to as the ability is removed due to the CR update in Ixalan.<\/p>\n For this instance, Hallowed Fountain<\/a> will enter play without \u201cshocking you\u201d, is untapped and is a nonbasic Mountain that taps for Red.<\/p>\n Lands that comes into play with counters<\/strong><\/p>\n Blood Moon<\/a> will cause Gemstone Mine<\/a> to enter play without any Mining counters and its mana ability is replaced with tap for red.<\/p>\n Similarly Blood Moon<\/a> will cause Dark Depths<\/a> to enter play without any Ice counters. Dark Depths<\/a> will lose its ability to pay 3 generic mana to remove an Ice counter and its ability to free Marit Lage from her prison. It however retains its Legendary and Snow Supertype and hence will be able to tap for red snow mana.<\/p>\n However once the Blood Moon<\/a> is removed from play, Dark Depths<\/a> seeing no Ice counters to hold Marit Lage back will release the 20\/20 behemoth into the world!<\/p>\n Dryad Arboriculture <\/strong><\/p>\nDryad Arbor<\/a>\n With Blood Moon<\/a> in play, Dryad Arbor<\/a> will still be a Dryad creature with the ability to tap for red mana. It will still be green.because it has a green color indicator which is not removed when Dryad Arbor<\/a> becomes a Mountain<\/a> as Blood Moon<\/a> does not operate on Layer 5 Colour-changing effects.<\/p>\n Lands of Artifice<\/strong><\/p>\n Blood Moon<\/a> will remove all of the lands\u2019s abilities and change it into a Mountain that taps for red. Darksteel Citadel<\/a> also loses its Indestructible ability.<\/p>\n Darksteel Citadel<\/a> and other artifact lands affect by Blood Moon still retains their artifact type.<\/p>\n Manlands<\/strong><\/p>\n With Blood Moon<\/a> in play, Shambling Vent<\/a> and other manlands will lose their animation ability together with their other abilities and be a nonbasic Mountain that taps for red.<\/p>\n However if Shambling Vent<\/a> is a creature and Blood Moon<\/a> enters play after it was animated, it will still be a 2\/3 white and black creature with its Elemental subtype. It still has Lifelink as when you set a land\u2019s subtype, it loses the abilities generated by its rules text but not abilities granted by other effects. In this case, the Shambling Vent<\/a> will lose its printed ability but not the abilities that it gave itself when you activated its animation ability.<\/p>\n Shafted by the Ixalan CR Update<\/strong><\/p>\n Poor Vesuva<\/a> and its kin such as Cavern of Souls<\/a>. Blood Moon<\/a> will remove Vesuva\u2019s ability that lets it enter the battlefield as a copy of a land. With Blood Moon<\/a> in play, Vesuva<\/a> is a nonbasic Mountain<\/a> that taps for red. Once Blood Moon<\/a> is removed, Vesuva<\/a> is not a copy of anything and is just a blank land.<\/p>\n Similarly for Cavern of Souls<\/a>, as you will not be able to choose a creature type when Cavern of Souls<\/a> comes into play with Blood Moon in play, it can only tap it for C once Blood Moon<\/a> leaves play.<\/p>\n Dependency<\/strong> For something to qualify as a dependency, the effect cannot be a \u201ccharacteristic-defining ability,\u201d and must apply in the same layer that the effect it \u201cdepends on\u201d is applying. * Effect A is said to depend on Effect B if: Both Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth<\/a> and Blood Moon <\/a>operate on the same Layer 6 of type changing effects. However applying Blood Moon<\/a> first will change what Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth<\/a> affects. This creates a dependency where Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth<\/a> is dependent on Blood Moon<\/a>. Hence no matter which order they enter the battlefield, we always apply Blood Moon<\/a> first. Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth<\/a> Urborg to lose its ability, so lands will not gain the swamp subtype.<\/p>\n Further explanation: Applying Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth<\/a> first will not change anything about what Blood Moon<\/a> will do, but applying Blood Moon<\/a> before Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth<\/a> will make Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth<\/a> into a Mountain, removing its abilities.<\/p>\n Moon Worship<\/strong><\/p>\n Now we have discussed much about Blood Moon<\/a> but how about its most infamous worshiper, the Magus of the Moon<\/a>?<\/p>\n With the same Oracle Text and Gatherer Text, how does the worshipper of the Blood Moon<\/a> interact with other cards?<\/p>\n While having a Magus of the Moon<\/a> in play will affect nonbasic lands similarly like having a Blood Moon<\/a> in play, what happens when we have nonbasic lands which have abilities that affects creatures?<\/p>\n What if we have The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale<\/a> and Magus of the Moon in play?<\/p>\n The ability adding of The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale<\/a> is also in Layer 6 while Magus of the Moon<\/a> is in Layer 4. Hence Magus of the Moon<\/a> will remove Tabernacle\u2019s ability and will not be affected by the Tabernacle tax!<\/p>\n How about Humility<\/a> is also in play with Tabernacle? It is pretty simple actually. Hence after we apply the Layer system in sequence, Magus of the Moon<\/a> is a 1\/1 with no abilities however all nonbasic lands are Mountains. \n* If a nonbasic land has an ability that causes it to enter the battlefield tapped, it will lose that ability before it applies. The same is also true of any other abilities that modify how a land enters the battlefield or apply \u201cas\u201d a land enters the battlefield, such as the first ability of Cavern of Souls. This is a change from previous rulings.
\n* Nonbasic lands will lose any other land types and abilities they had. They will gain the land type Mountain and gain the ability \u201cTap: Add Red.\u201d
\n* This effect doesn\u2019t affect names or supertypes. It won\u2019t turn any land into a basic land or remove the legendary supertype from a legendary land, and the lands won\u2019t be named \u201cMountain.\u201d
