It\u2019s part of the reason why this game is so fun and exciting, but sometimes you\u2019d wonder if there\u2019s an easier way to figure out what happens when someone tries to cast Invert on your Deep Freeze-d Ghalta with three +1\/+1 counters on it. This article (and the next) will serve as a guide to the esoteric section of the Comprehensive Rules known as \u201cInteraction of Continuous Effects\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p><img  style='float:left'  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Ghalta, Primal Hunger'><\/p> <p><img  style='float:right'  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Deep Freeze'><\/p><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What is a continuous effect?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An effect that is generated by spell or ability of an object.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Modifies characteristics\/control of objects<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some affect players or the rules of the game<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some have a duration, some last until the game ends.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As you can see, there are a lot of effects in this game. Some of them are good for you, and some are bad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What is an object then? These are considered <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">objects <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">under the rules of the game:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An ability on the stack.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A card, a copy of a card, or a token.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A spell, a permanent, or an emblem.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How each continuous effect interacts with each other is divided into 7 layers, applied in this order:\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CCTPCAP<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Layer 1. <strong>(C)opy<\/strong> effects<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Layer 2. <strong>(C)ontrol<\/strong> effects<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Layer 3. <strong>(T)ext<\/strong> effects<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Layer 4. <strong>(T)ype<\/strong> effects<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Layer 5. <strong>(C)olor<\/strong> effects<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Layer 6. <strong>(A)bility<\/strong> adding\/removing effects<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Layer 7. <strong>(P)ower<\/strong> &amp; Toughness<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 7a. Characteristic Defining Ability (CDA)<br \/>\n<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 7b. Setting P\/T<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 7c. +\/- P\/T<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 7d. Counter effect<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 7e. Switching P\/T<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now let\u2019s go through the layers<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Layer 1 \u2013 Copy Effects <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If an effect printed with a word \u2018<\/span><b>copy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019 in its ability text, then it is applied in this layer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p><img  style='float:left'  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Mirage Mirror'><\/p> <p><img  style='float:left'  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Quicksilver Gargantuan'><\/p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Mirage Mirror<\/strong>\u2019s activated ability creates an effect that is also applied in layer 1.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If a copy effect does more things that just simply copying, all of it still applies in Layer 1. <strong>Quicksilver Gargantuan<\/strong>\u2019s copy ability applies entirely in Layer 1, even the \u201cset p\/t to 7\/7\u201d part (which would usually apply in Layer 7b).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Layer 2 &#8212; Control Effects <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anything related to control-changing a card is applied in this layer. The keyword is &#8216;<\/span><b>control<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8216;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p><img  style='float:left'  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Mirage Mirror'><\/p> <p><img  style='float:left'  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Entrancing Melody'><\/p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Entrancing Melody<\/strong>\u2019s effect is a control effect, so it is applied in layer 2. Since it has no duration stated, it lasts until the game ends. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img  style='float:left'  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Trostani Discordant'><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Trostani Discordant<\/strong>\u2019s 3rd ability\u2019s effect is also applied in layer 2.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Layer 3 &#8212; Text-Changing Effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Any effect that changes the text in a spell or permanent is applied in this layer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Text changing effect can only change the type text, ability text in a card, with the exception of 2 cards (Spy Kit and Volrath\u2019s Shapeshifter) that can change the name of the card.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The keyword is <strong>&#8216;text&#8217;.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><p><img  style='float:left'  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=New Blood'><\/p> <p><img  style='float:left'  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Spy Kit'><\/p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>New Blood<\/strong> has 2 effects. One is changing control of the chosen creature which is applied in layer 2. The other one is changing all the text of that chosen creature type into a Vampire in layer 3. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Spy Kit<\/strong> has 2 effects, one is giving the creature extra names, that is applied in layer 3, and the other effect gives a creature +1\/+1 which is applied in layer 7c.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Layer 4 &#8212; Type-Changing Effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anything that changes, adds, or removes the type\/subtype\/supertype of a card is applied in this layer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p><img  style='float:left'  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Chameleon Colossus'><\/p> <p><img  style='float:left'  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Skilled Animator'><\/p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Chameleon Colossus<\/strong>\u2019s original creature type (Shapeshifter) is overwritten by Changeling, so it is all creature types instead (Shapeshifter included).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Skilled Animator<\/strong>\u2019s ability, the one that changes an artifact into an artifact creature, is also applied in layer 4 for as long as <strong>Skilled Animator<\/strong> stays in the battlefield.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p><img  style='float:left'  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Stormtide Leviathan'><\/p> <p><img  style='float:left'  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Spreading Seas'><\/p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Stormtide Leviathan<\/strong> adding the Island subtype is applied in layer 4, without overwriting the land\u2019s original subtypes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Spreading Seas<\/strong> sets a land\u2019s type into Island. If a land is set into a new basic land type, it loses all of its rule text, its old land types, and any copy effect that affecting it (CR 305.7).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Layer 5 &#8212; Color-Changing Effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Any effect that changes\/adds\/removes the color of a card is applied in this layer. While \u201ccolorless\u201d isn\u2019t a color, this also includes turning a card colorless. Example: Devoid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p><img  style='float:left'  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Cloudchaser Kestrel'><\/p> <p><img  style='float:left'  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Blisterpod'><\/p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Cloudchaser Kestrel<\/strong>\u00a0third ability\u2019s effect is applied in layer 5.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Blisterpod<\/strong>\u2019s devoid ability overwrites its default color (green, as seen in the symbols of its mana cost), making it colorless.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Swirl the Mists'><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Swirl the Mists<\/strong>\u2019s second ability is not a color-changing effect, but rather a text-changing effect, and thus will apply not in Layer 5, but Layer 3. Note that the ability mentions changing the <\/span><b>text<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of cards, though you&#8217;ll have to check the Oracle text for that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Layer 6 \u2013 Ability adding\/removing Effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Any effect that gives a new ability or removes an ability is applied in this layer.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Also, effects that make a creature lose its abilities is applied in this layer too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The keywords are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Have\/gain \u2018Any ability keyword\u2019<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gain \u201c&#8230;&#8230;.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lose \u201cability\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For example: Enchanted creature <\/span><b>has<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0hexproof. Target Creature <\/span><b>gains<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0trample.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p><img  style='float:left'  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Merfolk Trickster'><\/p> <p><img  style='float:left'  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Regisaur Alpha'><\/p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The effect of \u2018loses all abilities\u2019 from<strong> Merfolk Trickster<\/strong>\u2019s 2nd ability is applied in layer 6.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Regisaur Alpha<\/strong>\u2019s 1st ability is also applied in layer 6, while the second ability \u201cwith trample\u201d is not applied in layer 6. If <strong>Regisaur Alpha<\/strong> loses all abilities or leaves the battlefield, the created Dinosaur token will still have trample.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Layer 7 &#8211; Power\/Toughness<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Layer 7 has five sublayers, and deserves an article of its own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Timestamps<\/h2>\n<p><p><img  style='float:left'  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Deep Freeze'><\/p> <p><img  style='float:left'  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Mycosynth Lattice'><\/p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In general, these continuous effects are applied in the order listed above, first we figure out if there are any copy effects applied on a card, then control effects, and so on. Things get a little tricky when two effects happen in the same layer. For example, if <strong>Mycosynth Lattice<\/strong> is on the battlefield, what color would a creature enchanted by <strong>Deep Freeze<\/strong> be?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We know that color-changing effects apply in <strong>Layer 5<\/strong>. When two or more continuous effects clash in the same layer, we will apply the effects in the order they start affecting that object.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If <strong>Deep Freeze<\/strong> is already on the battlefield before <strong>Mycosynth Lattice<\/strong>, it means that <strong>Deep Freeze<\/strong> will say \u201cThis creature is blue\u201d, then <strong>Mycosynth Lattice<\/strong> will say \u201cNo, this creature is colorless\u201d, resulting in a colorless creature. The opposite is true if <strong>Mycosynth Lattice<\/strong> is on the battlefield before <strong>Deep Freeze<\/strong> &#8211; <strong>Deep Freeze<\/strong>\u2019s (later) effect will make it a blue creature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Dependencies<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A <\/span><b>dependency<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> between two continuous effects happens when one effect will cause another effect to no longer apply, or affects the set of objects the other effect applies. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For effects to qualify as \u2018dependent\u2019, both effects must<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">apply in the same layer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">not be characteristic-defining abilities<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Effect A is said to depend on effect B if applying B would cause:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Effect A to no longer apply.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a change on what effect A would apply to.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a change on how effect A applies to the things it applies to.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When effect A is dependent on effect B, we apply effect B first then effect A.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p><img  style='float:left'  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Blood Moon'><\/p> <p><img  style='float:left'  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth'><\/p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of the most popular cases for dependency is <strong>Blood Moon<\/strong> and <strong>Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What will happen if both of them are in play? How does this affect other nonbasic lands?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The effects of these two cards form a dependency because:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Both <strong>Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth<\/strong> and <strong>Blood Moon<\/strong>\u2019s effects apply in Layer 4.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth<\/strong> will be affected by <strong>Blood Moon<\/strong>\u2019s ability.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you apply <strong>Blood Moon<\/strong>\u2019s effect first, then <strong>Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth<\/strong> will lose its ability.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So we say that <strong>Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth<\/strong>\u2019s effect is <\/span><b>dependent<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on <strong>Blood Moon<\/strong>\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Because of this, we always apply <strong>Blood Moon<\/strong> first regardless of which enters the battlefield first.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And as a result, <strong>Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth<\/strong> will always be a Mountain that can tap for red mana and no other abilities.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Layer 7 will be in another <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">article<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
