That being <span class='judge-tooltip'><a href='https:\/\/apps.magicjudges.org\/judges\/dci\/29956408' ><strong>Chuanjie Seow<\/strong><\/a><span class='avatar'><img width='200' height='200' src='https:\/\/apps.magicjudges.org\/dci\/avatar?dci=29956408&size=200'><\/span><\/span> L2 judge from Singapore, would like to guide us as we all look into the mutations happening at Ikoria.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-caption alignnone judgeimg\"><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.magicjudges.org\/judges\/dci\/29956408\"><img src=https:\/\/apps.magicjudges.org\/dci\/avatar?dci=29956408&size=200 alt=\"Chuanjie Seow\"><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chuanjie Seow<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ikoria is full of mutated mutations, as a set that seemingly designed for the digital space, we got loads of questions from deterring cheaters using companions to how on Earth do I mutate stuff. Here we are going to focus on mutations mostly in the Commander EDH sphere as we got people still playing Commander via their mobile cameras and Discord.<\/p>\n<p>So let\u2019s get down to business and refer to the Ikoria release notes regarding mutate. Do go to the link to read the changes. <a href=\"https:\/\/magic.wizards.com\/en\/articles\/archive\/feature\/ikoria-lair-behemoths-and-commander-2020-edition-release-notes-2020-04-10?fbclid=IwAR3yGUXwHo118d17DXgRcMjLa-zqtGd6dEyqVlesthJ_ayzW6PVCVIHfEzc\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths and Commander (2020 Edition) Release Notes<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Questions and Answers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most questions revolve around Mutate and its interactions with other Keyword Abilities, Ability Words, or abilities that cause some confusion. Hence we will tackle them via their own ability section or individual cards below.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_765\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-765\" style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/files\/2020\/05\/a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/files\/2020\/05\/a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"581\" class=\"size-full wp-image-765\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-765\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Mutated Grizzly Bear<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cBlinking\u201d <\/em><\/strong>&#8211; If you cast <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Ephemerate&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Ephemerate<\/a> on a merged object, its individual cards will return into play unmerged. If you use Teferi\u2019s Time Twist instead, the individual cards will return and those which are creatures will return with a +1+1 counter.<\/p>\n<p><img  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Ephemerate'><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cDying\u201d <\/em><\/strong>&#8211; If a merged object dies, it only triggers die effects once no matter how many cards are in that stack. Similarly, if you are instructed to sacrifice a creature and you choose your merged object, you will have to move the entire object into the graveyard as it counts as a single creature no matter how many cards are in that stack.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8220;Devotion&#8221;<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; This is mostly a mechanic but we will be tackling the type changing ability via Devotion in the Gods of Theros. If <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Heliod%2C+Sun-Crowned&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Heliod, Sun-Crowned<\/a> is part of the merged creature stack and its controller\u2019s devotion falls below 5, it ceases to become a creature but remains as a singular merged permanent.<\/p>\n<p><img  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Heliod, Sun-Crowned'><\/p>\n<p>The merged permanent still has all of the characteristics of the topmost object and it has all of the abilities of its other cards. Do note, however, if the topmost object is a creature say <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Otrimi%2C+The+Ever-Playful&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Otrimi, The Ever-Playful<\/a>it loses its creature type and its Bear subtype.<\/p>\n<p><img  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Otrimi, The Ever-Playful'><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_774\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-774\" style=\"width: 798px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/files\/2020\/05\/b.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/files\/2020\/05\/b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"798\" height=\"572\" class=\"size-full wp-image-774\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-774\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">With 5 W devotion on the left and insufficient devotion on the right<br \/><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em><strong>ETB Triggers <\/strong><\/em>&#8211; When you merge a creature, the mutating spell does not enter the battlefield so no ETB triggers will happen.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>702.139c &#8211; <\/em><\/strong> As a mutating creature spell resolves, if its target is legal, it doesn&#8217;t enter the battlefield. Rather, it merges with the target creature and becomes one object represented by more than one card or token (see rule 721, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/rules\/cr721\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Merging with Permanents<\/a> &#8220;). The spell&#8217;s controller chooses whether the spell is put on top of the creature or on the bottom. The resulting permanent is a mutated permanent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Luminous+Broodmoth&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Luminous Broodmoth<\/a> &#8211; If the merged creature dies and has no flying, return each card that was part of the merged creature into play each with a flying counter.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_780\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-780\" style=\"width: 847px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/files\/2020\/05\/c.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/files\/2020\/05\/c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"847\" height=\"578\" class=\"size-full wp-image-780\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-780\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">They will both come back with Flying counters<br \/><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/rules\/cr721\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">721.3d<\/a> &#8211; If multiple replacement effects could be applied to the event of a merged permanent leaving the battlefield or being put into the new zone, applying one of those replacement effects to one of the objects affects all of the objects. If the merged permanent is a commander, it may be exempt from this rule; see rule 903.9a.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Mikaeus%2C+the+Unhallowed&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Mikaeus, the Unhallowed<\/a> &#8211; Similarly, if the merged creature dies and is not a Human without any +1\/+1 counters, return each card that was part of the merged creature into play each with a +1\/+1 counter.<\/p>\n<p><img  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Mikaeus, the Unhallowed'><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Mimic+Vat&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Mimic Vat<\/a> &#8211; If the merged creature dies, the controller of Mimic Vat may choose to exile all parts of the merged creature to be imprinted under Mimic Vat. When <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Mimic+Vat&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Mimic Vat<\/a>\u2019s second ability resolves, its controller chooses one of those cards to make a copy of.<\/p>\n<p><img  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Mimic Vat'><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_783\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-783\" style=\"width: 645px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/files\/2020\/05\/d.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/files\/2020\/05\/d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"645\" height=\"440\" class=\"size-full wp-image-783\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-783\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Whole merged object goes under the vat<br \/><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>721.3c &#8211; If an effect can find the new object that a merged permanent becomes as it leaves the battlefield, it finds all of those objects. (See rule 400.7.) If that effect causes actions to be taken upon those objects, the same actions are taken upon each of them.<\/p>\n<p>Manlands and Animated Planeswalkers &#8211; As per the second line under Unusual Situations, merged creatures with the Manlands or <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Sarkhan+the+Masterless&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Sarkhan the Masterless<\/a> will remain a merged permanent. The merged permanent still has all of the characteristics of the topmost object, which may cause it to be a creature or to not be a creature, and it has all of the abilities of its other cards.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_784\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-784\" style=\"width: 819px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/files\/2020\/05\/f.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/files\/2020\/05\/f.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"819\" height=\"576\" class=\"size-full wp-image-784\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-784\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sarkhan with and without his Dragonform ability<br \/><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meld &#8211; Let\u2019s say we have <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Gisela%2C+the+Broken+Blade&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Gisela, the Broken Blade<\/a> as part of a merged object and you have a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Bruna%2C+the+Fading+Light&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Bruna, the Fading Light<\/a> in play which you choose to meld together into <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Brisela%2C+Voice+of+Nightmares&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Brisela, Voice of Nightmares<\/a> at your end step, you will have to exile the entire Gisela merged object and Bruna, keeping the rest of the merged object in exile while you bring back only Brisela.<\/p>\n<p><img  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Brisela, Voice of Nightmares'><\/p>\n<p>Note that you still have to satisfy Meld\u2019s requirement of having Gisela, the Broken Blade to meld which means Gisela has to be the topmost of the merged object as a merged permanent has all of the characteristics of the topmost object.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_785\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-785\" style=\"width: 627px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/files\/2020\/05\/1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/files\/2020\/05\/1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"627\" height=\"450\" class=\"size-full wp-image-785\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-785\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Melding in process<br \/><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_786\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-786\" style=\"width: 627px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/files\/2020\/05\/2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/files\/2020\/05\/2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"627\" height=\"385\" class=\"size-full wp-image-786\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-786\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Other carded in merged object stays in exile while you bask in the glory of Brisela<br \/><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Morph, Megamorph or Manifest &#8211; Let\u2019s say you have a merged stack with a facedown <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Aphetto+Alchemist&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Aphetto Alchemist<\/a> as the topmost card. In the stack you have <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Gathan+Raiders&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Gathan Raiders<\/a>. You can actually pay either U or discard a card to flip your merged object face up. Note that we are unable to legally merge such a stack in the example as <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Gathan+Raiders&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Gathan Raiders<\/a> do not have Mutate. Example is used in the inevitable case where a card is printed gives all creature cards in your hand Mutate ability.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_788\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-788\" style=\"width: 813px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/files\/2020\/05\/3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/files\/2020\/05\/3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"813\" height=\"632\" class=\"size-full wp-image-788\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-788\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Morph problems<br \/><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>721.2e &#8211; If a merged permanent contains face\u2013up and face\u2013down components, the permanent\u2019s status is determined by its topmost component. If a face\u2013down permanent becomes a face\u2013up permanent as a result of an object merging with it, other effects don\u2019t count it as being turned face up.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, if your merged object gets turned face down by effects like <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Ixidron&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Ixidron<\/a> (which causes all cards in stack to turn face down), you can choose any of the morph or megamorph static abilities, if any morph cards are in the object, to turn your all cards in the merged object back up.<\/p>\n<p><img  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Ixidron'><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_789\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-789\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/files\/2020\/05\/4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/files\/2020\/05\/4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"428\" class=\"size-full wp-image-789\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-789\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">If Ixidron shows up<br \/><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>721.2f &#8211; If a merged permanent is turned face down, each face\u2013up component that represents it is turned face down. If a face\u2013down merged permanent is turned face up, each face\u2013down component that represents it is turned face up.<\/p>\n<p>Also if there is an instant or sorcery that has been manifested, is part of a merged object and you activate a morph ability of the stack, reveal the instant\/sorcery and it remains face down in the merged stack.<\/p>\n<p>721.2g &#8211; A face\u2013down merged permanent that contains an instant or sorcery card can\u2019t be turned face up. If such a permanent would turn face up, its controller reveals it and leaves it face down. Abilities that trigger when a permanent is turned face up won\u2019t trigger.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/rules\/cr613\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Interactions with Continuous Effects<\/a><\/strong> (do note there are a myriad of changes to the layers system in Ikoria)<br \/>\n613.1A &#8211; The very first layer is no longer simply copy effects. It&#8217;s now copiable rules and effects. The new rule 613.2 expands on this: it includes traditional copy effects and mutate modifications in timestamp order (and theoretically also host and augment modifications if we allow silver-bordered cards into this discussion), followed by face-down status-modifying values. Mutate aside, this has always been true, and it&#8217;s finally clear and explicit in the layers section of the rules.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see, Copy and Mutate are within the same layer and hence will be in effect via a timestamp order.<\/p>\n<p>If you have a merged object consisting of multiple P\/T changing CDA like <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Pack+Rat&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Pack Rat<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/searegion\/wp-content\/plugins\/lems-mtg-helper\/lems-mtg-helper-cardfinder.php?find=Serra+Avatar&width=223&height=310\" class=\"jTip\" name=\"\">Serra Avatar<\/a>, the timestamp rule applies as P\/T changing CDA are part of the same layer within CR613.7a.
