I was surprised to see it, especially since he was not an L1 checking off a box on his journey to L2, but someone who genuinely had feedback. I also learned that there was at least one other other judge, possibly more, who also received a late night review from Brandon. Great job providing helpful feedback in such a prompt manner, where suggestions can be immediately applied the next day of the event!

Providing quality feedback with such immediacy is a rarity in the judge community. Many wait until later, sometimes weeks, to go through notes and write reviews for others, when distance from the person being reviewed and from the event colors what needed to be said.

Chernosky is no stranger to these quirks, having worked many large events in her judge career since joining the judge ranks in 2012, having worked with many judges and at many high-level events since then, according to her Judge of the Week profile from Jan. 2014.

Such actions as providing quick feedback are small but noteworthy when one takes the initiative to do it, especially in the middle of a busy Grand Prix weekend.

Brandon joined the Level 2 ranks in Nov. 2015 after joining the judge ranks just five months earlier, according to Wizards’ judge website. He has become a key member of the judge community in San Diego in the last six months, working many events including several PPTQs and serving as a team lead at SCG Regionals in February. According to JudgeApps, Grand Prix Vancouver was Brandon’s first event of that nature as a judge.

It pays to go above and beyond sometimes, even if it keeps you up at night.

Written by: John Hornberg

John Hornberg here, sometimes, short and sweet speaks volumes about one’s actions.
