{"id":1402,"date":"2017-09-04T14:09:04","date_gmt":"2017-09-04T12:09:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/whatsupdocs\/?p=1402"},"modified":"2018-12-03T15:04:54","modified_gmt":"2018-12-03T13:04:54","slug":"running-a-draft-without-stamped-product","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/whatsupdocs\/2017\/09\/04\/running-a-draft-without-stamped-product\/","title":{"rendered":"Running a draft without stamped product"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With Nationals approaching and since it\u2019s likely very few of them will use stamped product, here is a procedure I\u2019ve already successfully tried a few years ago at a Grand Prix whose stamped product was not be delivered on time.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong><p><img  style='float:right'  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Captivating Glance'><\/p>Why are we usually using stamped product?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Stamped product allows each and every player to verify with a quick glance that the card their opponent is playing belongs to this draft.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is a good start since, at the very least, it prevents players from bringing their own deck. But this isn\u2019t perfect security: For instance, two players may still exchange some of their picks: These cards would be stamped so that is impossible for the opponent to catch. That\u2019s why deck checks remain a crucial element of tournaments using stamped product.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><p><img  style='float:right'  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Checks and Balances'><\/p><strong>What do we do when we are not using stamped product?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At Sealed Grand Prix or PPTQs, a player\u2019s card pool is registered by the person in front of them. We reinforce security by making players open and present the content of their boosters to another player.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The main tool to enhance security is to have another individual register a player\u2019s card pool. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is what we are going to do for a draft as well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><p><img  style='float:right'  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Secret Plans'><\/p><strong>Secrecy of the decks<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Usually, we swap pools. However, a core component of a draft is the secrecy of the decks, and therefore it must be preserved. Indeed, remembering which cards you passed during a draft is a skill that can give a player an advantage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Therefore, having drafts pools registered by another player in the pod or when another player from the pod is around is not a solution.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>More on security<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The intuitive conclusion of the latter point is that the drafts pools should be registered at the construction table. Yet, that causes issues since players would have quite a big opportunity to swap some cards when moving from their draft pod to that construction table.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Players therefore cannot move with their draft pools.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><p><img  style='float:right'  class='lems-mtg-cardimg' src='http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Handlers\/Image.ashx?size=small&type=card&name=Soul exchange'><\/p><strong>The solution: Swapping players<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Since you do not want players to move with their decks, you either need to move the draft pools or move the players.<\/p>\n<p>Moving the draft pools is very risky since:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It requires a lot of manpower or it will be very slow.<\/li>\n<li>There can be manipulation errors which would be at least very hard to repair:\n<ul>\n<li>A judge or staff member accidentally drops a pool and reveals it.<br \/>\n<em>Note: this risk can be mitigated by having players place their pools in a transparent ziplock bag.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Players swap two pools when passing them to another player.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Since pools cannot move, players will be the ones needing to.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The procedure<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Distribute decklists to each player.<\/li>\n<li>Ask players to take one and write ONLY their DCI number on the decklist (player using the deck)<br \/>\n<em>Without a name, identifying the owner of a pool is slightly harder (although not impossible, but nothing is perfect)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Instruct players to put their draft pool in a single pile on top of the decklist.<br \/>\n<em>If plastic bags are available, instruct them to place everything inside it.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Instruct players to swap with the player sitting at the pod behind them (see below)<br \/>\n<em>If your tournament is huge, you may want to make players swap by smaller groups so judges can more efficiently monitor the area<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1404 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/whatsupdocs\/files\/2017\/09\/Unstamped-draft-swap-Step-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"419\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/whatsupdocs\/files\/2017\/09\/Unstamped-draft-swap-Step-1.jpg 419w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/whatsupdocs\/files\/2017\/09\/Unstamped-draft-swap-Step-1-300x244.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/whatsupdocs\/files\/2017\/09\/Unstamped-draft-swap-Step-1-125x102.jpg 125w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 419px) 100vw, 419px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Once completed, swap the external rows (see below)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1405 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/whatsupdocs\/files\/2017\/09\/Unstamped-draft-swap-Step-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"419\" height=\"421\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/whatsupdocs\/files\/2017\/09\/Unstamped-draft-swap-Step-2.jpg 419w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/whatsupdocs\/files\/2017\/09\/Unstamped-draft-swap-Step-2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/whatsupdocs\/files\/2017\/09\/Unstamped-draft-swap-Step-2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.magicjudges.org\/whatsupdocs\/files\/2017\/09\/Unstamped-draft-swap-Step-2-125x125.jpg 125w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 419px) 100vw, 419px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Once every player swapped, instruct them to:\n<ol>\n<li>Write their name and DCI Number on the decklist (player registering the deck).<\/li>\n<li>Register the card pool.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Once every player is finished, perform the swap again to give pools back to their owners.<\/li>\n<li>Once every player got their pool back, instruct them to report to their construction table.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Note: There might be some pods with a number of players different than 8. These pods will need to be treated manually.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>For obvious reasons, players cannot stand up during this process, or there is a risk they could see pools from other players at their pods.<br \/>\n<\/strong>If players need to use the bathroom, handle it just like you would handle a teammate during a Team Event.
