Evgeniy Bryzgalov

  • Level: Level 2
  • Location: Perm, Russia
  • Region: Russia and Russian-speaking countries

Nathan Gotlib

  • Name: Nathan Gotlib
  • Pronouns He/him/his
  • Level: Level 1
  • Location: Antwerp, Belgium
  • Region: BeNeLux
  • Approximate date/month/year you started playing Magic: Fifth Dawn
  • L1 Certification Date: July 22, 2016
  • Favorite thing (e.g., card, deck, group of people) about Magic: Going turn one Time Vault / Voltaic Key during a feature match
  • Occupation: Artist Printmaker
  • Random fact about yourself: I have shaved twice in my life. Once for Movember, and once because I forgot what my chin looked like.
  • Why did you become a judge?: While I greatly enjoy playing Magic: the Gathering, what I enjoy the most about the game is spending time with some dear friends I have made playing over the years. I was thinking of other ways I could contribute to the game, and thought judging could be my little something.
  • What excites you most about this event?: I have been going to GPs for over 10 years, but this is the first time I will be staff!
  • What worries you most about this event?: I love sleep, and the days seem pretty long. But if there’s one thing that tends to keep me awake, it’s Magic.
  • What are you hoping to learn at this event?: More ways I’ll be able to be part of the Magic community.
  • Who are your mentors?: A little shout-out to Jason Howlett , to the NYC Eternal Crew and to the Glasgow Filthy Casuals.
  • What challenges have you faced or are you facing to become a better judge?: Time management.
  • How have you worked to overcome those challenges?: I am currently working as a freelance artist, giving me a little more freedom when it comes to time-tabling.
  • What is the best part about your local Magic community?: I am one of the few active Vintage players in the area, but we still manage to organise tournaments every once in a while! I have been enjoying the deck brewing elements of Gentry, too.
  • What is your favorite Magic memory?: During a Bazaar of Moxen Vintage tournament, I was playing Alexandre Darras in the feature match area for a spot in the top 8. After three epic games, including a turn one Time Vault / Voltaic Key on my part and a turn two Blightsteel Colossus on his, I lost. What stuck with me is the fact that all my friends, from Belgium and the UK, were cheering me on all through the match.

Carolin Haul

  • Name: Carolin Haul
  • Pronouns She/her/hers
  • Level: Level 1
  • Location: Wolfsburg, Germany

  • Favorite thing (e.g., card, deck, group of people) about Magic: Tokens
  • Occupation: Physiotherapist
  • Random fact about yourself: I play the Nyckelharpa! (music instrument)
  • Why did you become a judge?: Because I’d loved to organize smaller tournaments and wanted to spread the magic!
  • What excites you most about this event?: To be a part of to what keeps this big tournament running and meeting all kind of people from the Magic Community.
  • What are you hoping to learn at this event?: I’d love to get an idea what is happening behind the scenes at GP’s beyond what is seen from a players perspective. And I’m eager to get experience on my first GP so i’m lookin forward to meet new people, get new challenges and having fun.
  • What challenges have you faced or are you facing to become a better judge?: I’m setting too high benchmarks for myself e.g. I already met Lvl 2 requirements as uncertified Judge before taking the lvl 1 exam. And guess what I’m onto my lvl2 and I don’t whether I’m ready now or not…
  • How have you worked to overcome those challenges?: Talking helped a lot…and taking up the pencil and doing the actual exam!
  • What is your favorite Magic memory?: Playing in limited 2HG with my Hubby setting trust in one card that actually won the game. The board situation was totally against us and the opponents would have won, if they wouldn’t have attacked to keep their blockers. So we had to bluff our way through to it as for the card was the only one in the entire edition capable to help and it was in my hand. How likely was it? And the look on their faces was priceless as I tapped the mana and actually played it! Greatest 2HG moment so far!
