Nomination Statement

Hello, my name is Ralph Colby. I’m an L2 from Berkeley, California.

I have over 20 years of Magic organizing experience. I’ve been part of the previous South West Area Captain program and have mentored many judges over the years.

I had a brief stint in Idaho where I hosted the last of the Judge Academy virtual conferences. Currently I’m living and judging in Portland, Oregon but shortly I’ll be moving to Vancouver, Washington. While my time in the PNW has been short, I’ll have lived in 3 of it’s wonderful states.

I’m still learning the area and meeting local judges but I believe I have the experience and desire to help the area as a Regional Advocate.

At the end of your first six months as Regional Advocate, what does “success” look like?

More connections to Judge Foundry. The state of the judge program over the pandemic has been depressing. I’d love to contribute to help rebuild it.

What skills/experience do you bring to the role of Regional Advocate?

Years of judging, networking, and behind the scenes judge program work.

Describe your plans to recruit and utilize Area Communicators.

To be determined but once I’m more familiar with the plan, I can reach out and get volunteers.

What information would you give to a new judge moving into your region to become engaged with the community right away?

Our region is dominated by two landscapes: Seattle and Portland as major metropolitan areas, and the rest of the region tending towards being remote. How does this affect your plans for regional communication and support?
