A wild Northeast Magic Judge Newsletter has appeared!
Monthly News
- The very first thing that happened at the beginning of the month (although we also mentioned this last month), was the Judge Feedback Link! If anyone wants to give Judge related feedback, give them the link feedback.magicjudges.org!
- We recently posted First Time Floor Judging Notes Part 1 and Part 2 on the blog. These were compiled by Charles Hartford of Maine. They’re a great read for anyone who’s looking to work at a larger event with other judges. Check ’em out!
- Commander 2016 is coming out very soon! With all of the cards revealed, we have some new rules. Matt Tabak has our backs with a Commander 2016 Mechanics Article about a bunch of mechanics we’ll probably never see in a Competitive Tournament. 😀
- A slight error from last month: I completely forgot about the MOJOs! The Magic Online Judge Open tournaments have started. The first tournament came and went, the second one’s entry window is closed and is happening on Nov. 5th, but the third and last tournament, MOJO Scissors 2016 is still taking sign ups until the 5th. The tournament happens on Nov. 12th. If you missed Rock and Paper, make sure you sign up! For more information on the whole thing, click here!
- The last and possibly most important news out of October, the Standard Rotation is changing again! In short, standard will now be rotating once per year again. Battle for Zendikar block will stay in Standard until “Ham” block comes out after Amonkhet. Battle for Zendikar block will rotate with Shadows over Innistrad. If this is confusing, check out the article!
Judge Meetups
- Saturday, 11/12 – The Salisbury Laboratories at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, MA: Organized by Dan Collins, Bryan Hare, and Alex Mullins. This is a big one! The Northeast Fall 2016 Judge Conference is coming soon! This conference has a cap of 200 people, and, at the time of writing, 170 have already signed up! Be sure to RSVP before the cap! The conference has a theme of Failure, and is accepting applications for Presentations until Saturday, September 10th. More information can be found on the JudgeApps page, linked above. We hope to see you there!
- Sunday, 12/11 – Gamer’s Vault in Medford, NJ: Organized by Ilan Seid-Green. The Tri-State Judge Meetup is intended for Philadelphia, New Jersey, and Delaware judges, however, anyone’s welcome to come. If you’re interested, you should probably fill out their Google form and mark down the date.
- CJ Stambaugh is bringing back the monthly Connecticut Judge Meetups! He’s currently looking to see when people are available. If you live in CT and you’re interested, follow this link for more information!
Northeast Blog Highlights
- Judge of the Week (10/26/16): Chase Culpon, one of two fearless leaders of the NYC area, has been chosen as Judge of the Week! Want to get to know Chase? Check out the article! He does a lot of great things.
- Another mistake from last month! I hadn’t heard about (and therefore hadn’t mentioned) Much Ado About Judging! Much Ado About Judging is a new podcast that started last month, hosted by the Northeast’s own Ally Robertson, Zach Apony, and Megan Linscott. To check out their episodes, click here!
Tournament Report Highlights
- Scott Puccio discusses his StarCity Games 1k Invitational Qualifier in Niagara Falls. This was his first off site tournament, and didn’t know what to expect! Check out what happened!
- Bernie Hoelschen talks about his Modern StarCity Games Super Invitational Qualifier. A fully fleshed out Tournament Report, Bernie discusses the events of the tournament thoroughly, and, for what seems to be his first Competitive REL tournament, it sounds like things went very smoothly. Remember, Tournament Reports can still be great even if there were no fires to put out. 😉
