It’s the beginning of the month! You know what that means: it’s time for another Northeast Magic Judge Newsletter! Okay, so this month…
Monthly News
- Our region has a logo! With the help of Ilan Seid-Green, Anthony “Krug” Hullings, and the rest of the region, we now have a sweet logo to put on new swag! You can find the logo announcement and the logo itself right here. Ilan and Joe Hughto have started taking orders for the next line of Northeast Judge Swag (information for which can be found in the same link)! They’ve got t-shirts, event polos (which you can now get personalized!), and now, hooded sweatshirts! If you’d like to place an order, get on board the hype train!
- Kaladesh is out! WOO! While players take rides in their vehicles and gather energy, you may need some information about what’s going on in this set. Whether you need the Detrimental Trigger Guide, the release notes, or maybe even just the energy token print-out, Adrian St. John‘s Set Guide for Kaladesh is your gateway to anything you might need to find!
- Speaking of Kaladesh, Wizards has announced that they printed Japanese Kaladesh cards on new card stock. Something to keep in mind when doing deck checks with Kaladesh cards.
- Not to take away the thunder from Adrian’s set guide, but with a new set comes Magic Tournament Rules Updates and Magic Infraction Procedure Guide Updates. These are pretty important. We’ve got some new rules about shuffling and an update on handling default action triggers. Check ’em out!
- Exemplar Wave 7 is still open! It closes November 1st, so make sure you get your nominations in!
- If you’re working towards Level 3, you may find it interesting that Supplemental Activities have been discontinued. You can get more information in the link.
- It’s worth mentioning that the Regional Coordinator Selection Process window has opened and closed within the month. Our region hasn’t expired yet, but it’s worth noting that the window was only open from the 16th to the 25th, and the announcement was made on the 16th. It stands to reason that even the Northeast window won’t get a proper announcement in our newsletter, so if you’re looking out for it, keep that in mind.
- Do you want to certify new Level 2 judges? Well you’re in luck! The process for getting your L2 Tester Certification has been posted!
- We have a new Program Coordinator! Congratulations, Kevin Desprez! I’m sure we’re all anxious to see what he brings to the table!
- Light news, but important. We have a new link! Feedback.magicjudges.org can be used by anyone in the Magic community to submit any kind of feedback about a judge. Spread the link around!
- We have some new area captains! Maine and Eastern PA will each be getting additional Area Representatives! In Maine, current area rep Megan Linscott will be joined by Jeffery Emery. In Eastern PA, Ilan Seid-Green will be joined by Anthony “Krug” Hullings. Apparently these two gentlemen have already been leading in their areas, but when these things become official, celebration is necessary. Congratulations!
- Oh, Wizards also happened to show off some new shiny things. Check out announcement #7.
Judge Meetups
We’re starting to see more and more regular Judge meetups throughout the region, and I think these are certainly worth calling more attention to.
- Saturday, 11/12 – The Salisbury Laboratories at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, MA: Organized by Dan Collins, Bryan Hare, and Alex Mullins. This is a big one! The Northeast Fall 2016 Judge Conference is coming soon! This conference has a cap of 200 people, and, at the time of writing, 170 have already signed up! Be sure to RSVP before the cap! The conference has a theme of Failure, and is accepting applications for Presentations until Saturday, September 10th. More information can be found on the JudgeApps page, linked above. We hope to see you there!
- Sunday, 12/11 – Gamer’s Vault in Medford, NJ: Organized by Ilan Seid-Green. The Tri-State Judge Meetup is intended for Philadelphia, New Jersey, and Delaware judges, however, anyone’s welcome to come. If you’re interested, you should probably fill out their Google form and mark down the date.
Northeast Blog Highlights
- Feedback Loop (9/6/16): In this segment of Adam Eidelsafy‘s My First Review, Abby Kraycar shares her first review of Chris Wendelboe.
- Bearz Repeating (9/8/16): Paul Baranay starts discussing his experiences at Pro Tour Sydney. Unfortunately, he’s left us with an unbearable cliffhanger. Hopefully we’ll hear more about it as soon as he wraps up his exciting personal project
- The Battlefield Forge (9/14/16): Mani Cavalieri discusses a very tricky ruling he had to make at a PPTQ almost one year ago. Sometimes calls are a lot harder to make when the players involved know each other.
Tournament Report Highlights
- Michael Mapson discusses an SCG Super IQ from September 10th. He focuses on the negatives of the tournament, but makes sure to highlight the lessons learned.
- Alexandra Yang gives a thorough report on the Rhode Island SCG Standard State Championships in Pawtuket, RI. She was forced into a situation she hadn’t been prepared for, but it seems she managed pretty well.
