To Matthew Foster Recognized by Dan Collins Exemplar Rec ID: 1 |
Matt, this is a somewhat delayed recognition from early 2016. One of your local stores had changed the date of their PPTQ at the last minute, and the date coincided with the regional conference. You cancelled your plans to attend the conference in order to make it to this store’s event, which would otherwise surely have been cancelled. |
To Megan Linscott Recognized by Jon Goud Exemplar Rec ID: 2 |
Megan – We have worked together and I was happy to see you were going to be attending the maritime conference. I was very impressed with the example you set for the other judges during the weekend – you asked questions and were very engaged during each presentation, you provided interesting stories and great advice for junior judges, and you spoke openly and plainly about the importance of a more welcoming and diverse play experience (specifically gender issues). I think your maturity and eagerness gave our local judges a great role model to aspire to. Thank you 🙂 |
To Eric Smith Recognized by Matteo Callegari Exemplar Rec ID: 3 |
Eric, I love to experiment and to throw challenges at judges in order to push them out of their comfort zone and to have them tackle problems in a different way. During GP Atlanta day2 I put you in charge of the Map for Side Events with the tasks to handle space and judges for a tight 21 events schedule by using an innovative tracking system. You completely amazed me by how quickly you entered into the new system and by how many improvements you actually implemented almost immediately. Wow, this was both impressive and instructive. Thanks a lot! |
To Joseph Steet Recognized by Stefan Ladstätter Exemplar Rec ID: 4 |
Hi Joe! It was great meeting you at GP Lille. I like how you are pushing your geographic boundaries, and enriching others with your presence. Thanks for the interesting insights into the world of numbers @ conventions, and your enthusiasm for giving feedback. I didn’t even notice half of the stuff you’d written about me in your review! You have a great talent of putting otherwise invisible moments into words, and I feel lucky to have interacted with you. Thanks for your observations and also for reminding me of the great experiences I’ve had in the USA. |
To Dan Collins Recognized by Jeff Morrow Exemplar Rec ID: 5 |
Thanks for jumping head-first into the Policy Data Project! Your arrival brings a useful bit of enthusiasm to get us over our recent doldrums. Your initiative in preparing the next survey was greatly appreciated. I think that one will give us some interesting results to work with. We’ll see! |
To Niko White Recognized by Toby Elliott Exemplar Rec ID: 6 |
When I made some casual suggestions on how to improve FNM, I figured it’d be taken under advisement. Yet, you made them happen almost overnight, and I think the Pandemonium FNMs are much improved as a result. That’s amazing responsiveness! |
To Paul Baranay |
“Paul, A lot of my recognitions this go-around have been a long time coming, and this one is no exception. There are a lot of reasons that judges in this program rightfully praise you for your accomplishments, but today I am choosing to recognize your continued care of your colleagues both on and off the tournament floor. I am thankful for you reaching out in a few of my recent times of need, if nothing else than to check in and tell me that you care.” |
To Gilbert Medeiros Recognized by Benjamin McDole Exemplar Rec ID: 8 |
Hey man! This is for the tremendous work you’ve done recently. You went above and beyond what was asked of you in both Providence and Louisville. You went from sides lead to helping create a sides schedule, helping to create a staff list, and just generally being a go to and sounding board when random and crazy things happen. Additionally, you’ve been, by most accounts, one of the most improved judges this year. It’s not often that you say someone just “gets it” but that seems to be what’s happened. I look forward to working with you more! |
To Jonah Kellman Recognized by Eric Dustin Brown Exemplar Rec ID: 9 |
Jonah – Over the last month we have had several opportunities to work together and at each event I see you grow a little more. You’re actively seeking feedback and looking for ways to improve. Additionally you aren’t afraid to pull punches when giving feedback to other judges and you’re willing to write some difficult reviews. To top at off most recently at Eternal Weekend I heard from judge after judge about how you went above and beyond and really helped make the event a success. Thank you for your hard work, and keep it up! |
To Joe Hughto Recognized by Eric Dustin Brown Exemplar Rec ID: 10 |
Joe – I want to thank you for being an invaluable resource to me in the program and an incredible mentor. Knowing that I can come to you basically whenever with any problem is incredibly reassuring. In addition your work in the last year on ODEs has been incredible. Your event mapping spreadsheets make logistics for ODEs as well as Swiss Sides so much easier. I’m excited to see where you take this tech in the future. Thank you for your help, advice, and contributions to the program. |
To Joe Hughto Recognized by Paul Baranay Exemplar Rec ID: 11 |
Joe, I really enjoyed working with you at GP Atlanta, where you were ODE Lead. You kept a busy section of the room running as smoothly as a Formula 1 race car, in large part thanks to your event-tracking software. Beyond that, you did a great job of keeping ODEs fun. By telling the ODE judges that you specifically chose them for your team, you showed them that they were valued. Kudos! |
To Toby Elliott Recognized by David Rappaport Exemplar Rec ID: 12 |
So… just to start, there are these documents we use… If it were just that Toby has contributed over the years in care and dilligence, it would certainly be exemplary enough. IMHO. Toby has been so much more than that. In leadership, Toby has a disarming humor that makes him very approachable. His tangible positivity is infectious and inspires excellence. For me personally, Toby left a mark as a member of my team at PT Philadelphia (the last public PT). Toby showed great deference and impressed upon me how important it is of a leader to know how to follow as well… it is a lesson I am not likely to ever forget… and to help, he gave me a memento. I look at it occasionally and it inspires me just as his kind praise did on the day. Toby, thank you for being an inspiration… to us all. |
To Rich DiLeo Recognized by Paul Baranay Exemplar Rec ID: 13 |
Rich, I would like to recognize you for putting together the L1 Certification Guide ( http://blogs.magicjudges.org/northeast/become-a-judge/l1-certification-guide/ ), which is a wonderful resource for L1 candidates. Amidst the wealth of information about becoming a judge that already exists, your guide provides the essentials without being overwhelming, while also pointing to more resources for those who want to take the plunge. Kudos! |
To Paul Holbrook Recognized by Joe Wiesenberg Exemplar Rec ID: 14 |
“Paul, Thanks for your really excellent tournament report focusing on your time as a floor team lead. There are not many pieces of specific advice out there regarding how to succeed as a team lead, but your tournament report does a great job of going in-depth on not only the decisions you made but your reasons for making them. I would encourage anyone entering a leadership position to check it out: http://apps.magicjudges.org/forum/topic/29294/” |
To Amanda Stevens Recognized by Sean Catanese Exemplar Rec ID: 15 |
Amanda, you endured a lot of highly focused and intense negativity after standing up for yourself. The way in which you handled this was exemplary. You asked for help when you needed it (and I’m not just talking about when you were at the event – you sought help afterward when the online barrage began, too). You identified your limits and sought to balance the greater good with your own interest in furthering the discussion among allies and (hopefully temporary) adversaries. The conversations weren’t always easy or friendly, but you put your best foot forward. Keep it up. |
To Alfred Dziewit Recognized by Steven Zwanger Exemplar Rec ID: 16 |
Al, your tournament report about “Dry Toast, Butter and Jam” was candid about the challenges your event faced, but also insightful about possible corrections and improvements. I also note that you searched for and read an article from last year with advice for judging a PPTQ. |
To Jordan Trundy Recognized by Abraham Corson Exemplar Rec ID: 17 |
This recognition may be a little late, but in my mind, is no less valid. At SCG Worcester, I was very impressed with your ability to simultaneously de-escalate a tense situation while also remembering to issue one of the players involved the appropriate penalty (USC minor). Your ability to deliver this warning in a way that didn’t aggravate the situation was very impressive. |
To Alfred Dziewit Recognized by Abraham Corson Exemplar Rec ID: 18 |
Al, Proactivity is one of the most important qualities of judges of all levels, and I’m glad to see that you seem to have this in spades. Thanks for lending a hand at the right time with our efforts to sort and identify lists at GP Providence, even though you weren’t actually assigned to this team. |
To Pi Fisher Recognized by Dan Collins Exemplar Rec ID: 19 |
Pi Fisher has been contributing to the Northeast US Fall Conference by working with a student group to get us access to space, and by working with the organizers to help us understand the site. As I write this, the conference is still two weeks away, but by the time you read it, it will be over – so thanks for all the work you did to make it happen! |
To Charles Featherer Recognized by Nicholas Sabin Exemplar Rec ID: 20 |
Charles, this recommendation is written by Angela Aliff in recognition of your exemplary work on stage throughout Eternal Weekend. The quality of your customer service was exceptional, but I particularly want to commend your attention to detail. You were so proactive about finding ways to improve organization and productivity on stage that you initiated tasks before other staff were even aware that they needed to be completed (like disassembling the extra kits of promotional items), and you were always eager to assist other staff members when you could. Your cheerful initiative made the event better for everyone, players and staff alike. |
To Kate Skelly Recognized by Benjamin McDole Exemplar Rec ID: 21 |
Hey! This is for the fantastic job you did at GP Providence. You handled a difficult player with grace and diplomacy. Furthermore, you made a large, and expanding event run smoothly, despite the same player’s repeated attempts at disruption. Finally, you handled the situation well, even after a member of staff dropped the ball. Thanks for your awesome work! |
To Tate Prodigalidad Recognized by Paul Baranay Exemplar Rec ID: 22 |
Tate, I enjoyed working with you at New Jersey Invitational in August. You did a great job, jumped into your tasks feet-first, and held your own in a policy discussion we had later in the day. I look forward to seeing you at more events in the future! |
To Adam Eidelsafy Recognized by Alejandro Raggio Exemplar Rec ID: 23 |
Adam, your work and your attitude at GP Rimini was amazing. I noticed you were working very hard and you were always showing a positive attitude. Also, you had the time to engage in interesting conversations with other judges. Being able to share these experiences when coming from a different geo-region is very good for everyone and it helps to improve the judge program. |
To Jonah Kellman |
“Jonah – your persistence and dedication to the Mystical Tutor project is admirable. Given my unpredictable work schedule and “”stretching”” submission deadlines I think that other project managers may have eventually given up on me and let things slide – or worse approach the situation judgmentally or in a chastising way. You recognized that my heart was behind the project and provided many gentle nudgings when deadlines were approaching. The result is I was able to contribute to the project, things got done, and noone got angry or upset with each other. I believe that you handled this with a great spirit of teamwork, alot of maturity, and with great diplomacy. hmmm … why does that sound familiar? ;)” |
To Megan Linscott Recognized by Eric Levine Exemplar Rec ID: 25 |
Megan, the presentation you gave on Diversity at the Northeast Leadership Conference in September was fantastic. You clearly put in tons of energy before, during, and after your presentation, (yes, after – thanks for linking those articles!) and from my personal perspective, your presentation was the one that had the most impact that weekend. Thanks so much! |
To Ilan Seid-Green Recognized by Guillaume Beuzelin Exemplar Rec ID: 26 |
Ilan, I work with you twice and you impressed me twice by your professionalism and your presence. Last time was at GP London, when we were overwhelmed between registration and score-keeping, you came up with the idea of seating people by yourself time for the stage to catch-up. Once we agreed with than you took care of the firing of this events, then report asap at the stage to see how you could help to solve next issue. |
To Ellen McManis Recognized by John Brian McCarthy Exemplar Rec ID: 27 |
Ellen, thanks so much for helping me refine the scenarios for my judge conference presentation on rewinds. You gave a ton of great suggestions on how to make them better education tools and your scenario on rewinding Inquisition is sure to give folks something to think about. |
To Jeffrey Emery Recognized by Jon Goud Exemplar Rec ID: 28 |
Jeff – I was very pleased to see we would get some ‘out of area’ judges attending the maritime conference. Your participation exceeded my expectations greatly – you were very engaged with the local junior judges, prepared a great presentation on IPG fundamentals which would be very useful for the newer L2s, and you even took the time during dinner to field an open discussion about the road to L2. Thank you for your contributions this weekend, and for your impact on the community here in Atlantic Canada 🙂 |
To Mani Cavalieri Recognized by Steven Zwanger Exemplar Rec ID: 29 |
Mani, while judging the Top 8 at Grand Prix Providence, you were thorough and diligent about watching for Slow Play, even frequently using your phone to time player decisions that looked like they might end up lengthy. And when a player did take too long in making a decision, you reminded him to play at a more appropriate pace. |
To Joseph Steet Recognized by Scott Neiwert Exemplar Rec ID: 30 |
Joe – At GP London, we had a far larger than expected Mini-Masters event on Friday. This quickly overwhelmed the system that we had set up. While we improvised a new system, you were in charge of the Mini-Masters happening in the back of the room. You calmly and coolly handled these events with minimal interruption or support, until they were able to be absorbed into the new, improvised system that we arranged. The level-headedness you exhibited was exemplary, and it made possible working with the hundreds of players who showed up Friday morning, shattering the expectations that we had laid out. Thank you. |
To Ilan Seid-Green |
“Ilan, At GP London, you successfully earned your Team Lead check on Sunday. More importantly, you were able to not just successfully work with but lead a multi-national team smoothly at what I believe was your first international Grand Prix. The level of flexibility and understanding needed for this is exemplary, and I wanted to recognize you for it. Thank you!” |
To Ally Robertson Recognized by Charlotte Sable Exemplar Rec ID: 32 |
I want to recognize Ally for taking the time and effort to put together the new Much Ado about Judging podcast. This podcast provides much needed diversity in the area of judge podcasts and is an excellent resource that will only continue to grow in its utility to the judge program. Keep up the good work. |
To Gilbert Medeiros Recognized by Eric Levine Exemplar Rec ID: 33 |
Gil, I was very impressed with the work you did on the Northeast Leadership Conference. You did a great job securing space for us to stay, work, and enjoy ourselves – I couldn’t imagine a better setup. Thanks! |
To Gilbert Medeiros Recognized by Toby Elliott Exemplar Rec ID: 34 |
Thanks for going the extra mile to make the Regional leader conference a social event as well as a working event. All those efforts – the cookout, the games – made a big difference to the weekend. |
To Ilan Seid-Green |
“We’ve done two waves of shirts and polos for the NE region now, and both times you’ve been the one I’ve gone to in order to make sure that all of the legwork of contacting manufacturers and the like is getting done. You’ve done a great job with that. This time around, I completely forgot to run stuff by brand after we made a new logo, but you made sure that this wasn’t missed and forwarded stuff onto John as needed. Thanks for all that you’ve done to make sure that people in the region get to feel like they’re truly part of something by wearing stuff that you helped create.” |
To Gilbert Medeiros |
“Gil, I’m recognizing you today for your exemplary diplomacy, as observed during GP Providence. Dealing with upset players is never a fun time, but you seemed to leave one player that I sent you a little better off than he was when he started. I appreciate your observation that sometimes all a player wants to do is be heard.” |
To Mani Cavalieri Recognized by CJ Crooks Exemplar Rec ID: 37 |
I want to recognize your contributions and leadership from the NJ Modern Open. You handled end of round like a veteran. Visually confirming the scorekeepers records so that we didn’t end up with an outstanding table that wasn’t present, watching a table yourself when it could be balanced, and understanding when floor coverage needed to spread out instead of sit on individual matches all indicated that you were more than prepared for the task. It was great to work with you and I’m glad it helped get you ready for the TL check in Atlanta. Well done! |
To Gilbert Medeiros Recognized by Paul Baranay Exemplar Rec ID: 38 |
Every idea needs a champion. Gil, thank you for being the champion of this year’s Northeast Leadership Conference. This event would not have been possible, let alone as successful, without your personal knowledge of the Cape; your dedication to hospitality; and your willingness to go above and beyond before, during, and after the event. |
To Gilbert Medeiros Recognized by Nicola DiPasquale Exemplar Rec ID: 39 |
I just wanted to say thank you for your work with the Leadership conference that happened recently in the NE. While I personally was not able to attend, everyone I spoke to about it said it was a great success. I know that you were involved and put a bunch of work into it when we spoke about it at the NJ SCG Invitational (especially with going out of your way to make sure people were invited and passing on information about the conference). So congratulations on putting together a wonderful conference for the judges of the NE to learn, grow, and assist each other! |
To Terrence Cheung Recognized by John Alderfer Exemplar Rec ID: 40 |
Terrence, I wanted to call out your recent work in finalizing the logo for the Northeast US region. You took the concepts that were submitted and created several viable options for the region to choose from. The final image that you created has already been used for regional mailings, attire and I hope to continue to find many more uses for it. Thanks again! |
To Samuel Nathanson Recognized by John Alderfer Exemplar Rec ID: 41 |
Sam, I wanted to thank you for your service as Area Captain for the NYC/Long Island area and for recognizing both that you were not going to be able to devote the time needed for the role and that the area was probably better served as two distinct areas. Your plan to address both of these issues was well presented and I have high hopes that it will yield positive results. Thank you once again! |
To Dan Collins Recognized by John Brian McCarthy Exemplar Rec ID: 42 |
In a recent policy blog post, you saw an issue with some confusing phrasing and worked to get it clarified. I appreciate how well you followed up with Toby and illustrated the confusion this phrasing could cause, especially in that you recognized the importance of the change, given how posts like this get quoted out of context. |
To Toby Elliott Recognized by Charlotte Sable Exemplar Rec ID: 43 |
At PT Kaladesh, Toby and I had several discussions about my place in the program and the directions things were headed in the future. These discussions as well as our talks about policy over the course of the weekend left me feeling more clearheaded and confident than I have in a long while. Thank you for this exemplary mentorship, Toby. |
To Joe Hughto Recognized by Federico Donner Exemplar Rec ID: 44 |
Doctor Hugs, very few people have the capacity to look at a problem and dedicate 3 months to develop a solution that works so well that it’s hard to understand why we don’t have that tool available in the first place. Your system for ODEs at GPs was so elegant, simple and functional that I’m still in awe. Thanks for taking it up on yourself to improve the player experience and to develop this amazing tool. Hope to use more of it soon. |
To Joe Hughto Recognized by John Temple Exemplar Rec ID: 45 |
“Joe, The event maps system that you have developed for events is amazing! It has been a joy watching you identify a potential growth area, particularly Swiss and On Demand Event seatings, and develop better ways for us to run those events then allowing others to use it and give suggestions on improvements. The lesson here is for others to never stop trying to improve events and Joe’s work here is a shining example.” |
To Paul Baranay |
“Paul, Fantastic job orchestrating the recent online developers meetup. From start to finish – and even with a summary after the fact – you helped keep developers engaged, feeling like part of a team, and it led to some real development. Keep up the fantastic work! – Lems” |
To Toby Elliott Recognized by Bryan Prillaman Exemplar Rec ID: 47 |
The shortcuts blog post was probably the most detailed explanation I have seen on the topic. Thanks for seeing the need and addressing it so completely, and fielding all the salty questions on the forums. |
To John Alderfer Recognized by Nicola DiPasquale Exemplar Rec ID: 48 |
I realize that this may just be a part of your “job” as RC now, but you have been listening to my stories and offering your advice and opinions for quite some time now, well before you were RC. This is something that is very important to me and helps keep me going (especially relevant our recent conversations at the PT in Honolulu). Thank you for always being there my friend. |
To Paul Baranay Recognized by Gavin Duggan Exemplar Rec ID: 49 |
Paul’s done yeoman’s work keeping the morale and productivity of the JA dev team high. He manages things clearly and effectively, coordinates get togethers in a way that works with everyone’s schedule, and is generally available to provide guidance on effort to everyone involved in a fairly demanding project. |
To Joe Hughto Recognized by John Alderfer Exemplar Rec ID: 50 |
Joe, I am constantly thrilled to see the projects that you play a part it. This time around I want to call out your efforts towards getting judges in the Northeast US region to get onboard the Hype Train via the creation of a design contest for our new logo and the use of that logo for new regional attire. Thanks as always for your contribution! |
To Cody Gavigan Recognized by David Zimet Exemplar Rec ID: 51 |
via Victor Pinto: “Cody, you were an excellent judge in the ODE team at GP Louisville, and even after not being allowed to test for L2 you performed above what was expected. You are an example of how to overcome a bad situation and still perform at a 100%. For that reason I think you deserve an exemplar recognition.” |
To Mani Cavalieri Recognized by Nicholas Sabin Exemplar Rec ID: 52 |
Mani, this recognition may come a little late, but I wanted to give you a nod for doing such a great job as an effective leader at SCG New Jersey. You were able to take your personality — effusive, loud, sometimes (by your own acknowledgement) silly — and mold it into a style of leadership that was both effective and personal to you. Keep up the great work. |
To Joshua Hudson |
“Forwarding for Timothy Mack: “”Josh, due to my recent failure on my L2 practice exam, I was severely doubting my abilities and my place in the judge program. When I contacted you to discuss this, you immediately reminded me of the kind of judge that you think I am and the kind of judge you think that I can be. It truly helped me get past my failure (something that can be extremely difficult for me sometimes). You’ve been an amazing mentor for me and I look forward to proving you right soon.””” |
To Jeffrey Emery |
“Forwarding for Charles Hartford: “”I recently had to solo TCGplayer states. |
To Ilan Seid-Green Recognized by John Alderfer Exemplar Rec ID: 55 |
Ilan, I wanted to recognize your work on the Northeast US region’s judge apparel. Your organization and communication on this project has resulted in both a new logo for the region and a new wave of hoodies/shirts. I know that you have more ideas for cool things for the region and I look forward to seeing what’s coming. |
To Christopher Wendelboe Recognized by John Alderfer Exemplar Rec ID: 56 |
Chris, thank you very much for the maintenance of the Northeast US region’s blog page. This is a great resource for the region and I greatly appreciate your efforts. |
To Joe Hughto Recognized by Rob McKenzie Exemplar Rec ID: 57 |
” Joe, your event board google doc is fantastic. After using it at GenCon and GP Milwaukee, I am so excited to keep up with it and keep using it. Innovations like this make big events smoother and easier, and your work on this was great, even on random days you were not at an event you were down to fix our issues and do updates.” |
To Paul Baranay Recognized by John Alderfer Exemplar Rec ID: 58 |
Paul, it constantly amazes me how you are able to juggle so many projects. The project that I want to highlight this time around is your work on the L2 Tester Plan for the Northeast US. Almost as soon as the announcement was made about L2T, you contacted me about what we should do. I had general ideas and since you were the L2 testing coordinator for the NE already, I assumed that this would involve you. Within short order, not only did you say that you would take this task on, but you presented a cohesive document that we could use to pave the way forward. Thank you for this and for so many other things. |
To Rusty Potter |
“Firstly, I am very impressed with the way you have progressed this year having got yourself out into the big wide world beyond the store a few times, and I now think you’re a solid candidate for level 2. But real recognition must come for the way you helped me with a recent PPTQ, where there were some unusual challenges, but overcome fairly simply by the accommodations you made.” |
To Katie Bishop |
“Katie, At the Somerset SCG Invitational, you approached me to ask about how I felt about pronoun usage for the sake of educating your peers on how to address me as a queer judge. I appreciate you going the extra step not only to check in with me on the issue, but more importantly that you would take the time to educate others on a subject that is critical to our role as community ambassadors, and in doing so also promoting camaraderie between judges! Thank you! <3" |
To Amanda Stevens Recognized by Danny Batterman Exemplar Rec ID: 61 |
My nomination of Amanda is twofold. The first is for working tirelessly to make Magic events a safer and more inclusive space for everyone. A lot of this work has been behind the scenes, and I would like to take a moment to recognize it publicly. The second is for showing outstanding courage, poise, and etiquette in the face of hatred and bigotry. Amanda is not only an example of the very best of what the Judge program has to offer, she is an example of the very best the Magic community has to offer. |
To Rusty Potter Recognized by Jacen Simon Exemplar Rec ID: 62 |
I was fairly apprehensive about the judge class that you, AJ, and I would be running, but you were so helpful to both of us, and your input was valuable. I think the mere fact that the event happened at all was exemplary, and to be involved in it, especially as an L1, is worthy of recognition. |
To Joel Goggin Recognized by Simon Cooper Exemplar Rec ID: 63 |
Wanted to recognise you for some great insights into the program you gave me from the perspectives of a mostly store based judge in a somewhat remote corner of the country, I’m very glad you stay active in the program and am impressed with the efforts you make getting to and participating in our regional conferences. |
To David Scopac Recognized by Elliot Raff Exemplar Rec ID: 64 |
Dave, you’ve now put in tremendous personal time and effort to revitalize the Magic community in not one, but multiple stores in the Boston area. Where most people would simply see problems and not return to stores, you put your considerable knowledge to work for the good of the players. Your work has helped the community immensely, and please consider this message a small appreciation for the behind-the-scenes work you do unbeknownst to the player community. |
To Katie Bishop Recognized by Erin Leonard Exemplar Rec ID: 65 |
Katie, your work at registration at GP Portland was amazing! Not only did you provide exceptional customer service, but you suggested improvements to our process and volunteered to implement them. Your cheerful attitude made you a pleasure to work with, and the players seemed to enjoy interacting with you as well. During our debrief you gave me such detailed ideas that make a tangible improvement in our system. When you suggested a line wrangler, then demonstrated how effective it could be, you sped up the process immediately. I really appreciate the extra effort you put into registration and look forward to working with you again! |
To Alexandra Yang Recognized by Russell Deutsch Exemplar Rec ID: 66 |
Alexandra, I was very impressed with your abilities at GP Providence this year. You are an extremely talented L1 with many things to offer the program. I was specifically impressed with your attention to cleanliness. Even though our ODE section had bouts of high traffic; the chairs were always straight, the tablecloths were always tidy, and the play areas were always clean due to your diligence. Your attention to detail and desire to create a welcoming playspace for our players added much benefit to the day. I strongly feel as though other judges should follow your example, and that your behavior at GP Providence was exemplary. |
To Alexandra Yang |
“Hi Allie, I wanted to recognize you for your hard work at GP Providence. As you know, Russell Deutsch gave you positive feedback at the event. I wanted to give you some context for that. Russell was discussing how he was frustrated with some of the judges on staff were spending most of their time on Friday talking with each other rather than finding things to do like cleaning up draft chaff, pushing in chairs, chatting with players, and generally being event-focused. However, he was concerned about being seen as domineering if he started criticizing judges for doing nothing. I told Russell that a good compromise was to focus on POSITIVE reinforcement, praising judges who were doing the things he thought judges should do. I asked him if he had noticed that a certain judge (you) doing exactly the thing he wanted judges to do, working the floor and making sure that everything looked clean and professional for the players. He said “”yes, Allie is awesome, she’s the only one doing these things while everyone else is hanging out chatting”” to which I replied, “”then tell her that!”” I kept watch for the rest of the event and confirmed that he was right. Judging isn’t just about knowing the rules; it’s about running a great event. You picked up slack from your team and volunteered yourself for inglorious tasks for the benefit of the players and TO. You didn’t just assume that, because you had no events to watch and no calls to take, you had nothing else to do. You kept looking for ways to make the event better. I want to recognize that with this nomination.” |
To James Sanderson |
“Hi James, I wanted to nominate you for your excellent handling of the unfortunately DQ at a draft in early October. Bribery DQs are hard to handle, because often players have no idea that what they did was wrong. A judge who has to handle these situation has to balance firmness in applying the penalty; sympathy towards the player; and clarity of explanation. You hit all three out of the park. You made it clear that the DQ was something you had to do, despite the player’s insistence that it was just a ‘casual’ game and his attempts to just drop; you provided a clear explanation of why the DQ *had* to be issued to maintain the integrity of tournament structures and rating systems; yet you still were sympathetic and understanding to a player who was receiving a very harsh penalty from an offhand and ignorant comment. What’s more, you followed up by pulling me aside for feedback. Even though you handled the situation well and I told you as much, you still desired to better yourself and improve as a judge. This reflected very well on you. Thanks for being an asset to the local community!” |
To Schuyler Panner Recognized by Christopher Wendelboe Exemplar Rec ID: 69 |
You were instrumental to the success of our most recent Triple PPTQ in New Hampshire. You were able to multitask and handle being our tech guy for the day, with the first hurdle being dealing with figuring out how we had no internet connection working. After that, your next hurdle was dealing with the printers not working. Your ability to get the first event going on time made what could have been a catastrophic day into something excellent, and the whole time you did it with a smile on your face! |
To Amanda Stevens Recognized by Rick Miles Exemplar Rec ID: 70 |
Amanda you have been a rock in the community, fighting for safe spaces and inclusiveness. Your strength has always been an inspiration to me, and your work has made the entire Magic community a better place. Thank you for fighting for our community to be more inclusive, don’t ever stop. |
To Alfred Dziewit Recognized by Robert Langmaid Exemplar Rec ID: 71 |
I read your report dry toast, and was impressed with your understanding of what would have improved the PPTQs you worked. It was great that you have a good relationship with the TO, hopefully your recommendations will be followed the next PPTQ they host. The most helpful recommendations that I saw were you ideas around getting players to fill out registration sheets in block letters with a box for local players to tick, making for faster tournament start up. |
To Cody Gavigan Recognized by Jacob Kriner Exemplar Rec ID: 72 |
“Cody, Thank you for running The Adventurer’s Guild’s GPT last minute as their regular judge was unavailable. I was glad to hear from the TO that your arrived well prepared and early to make sure everything was setup. While covering a GPT in itself is not exemplary, your availability to help ensure a successful event less than a week before and make it a great event for the players and organizer is a great value to the community. “ |
To Amelia Browning Recognized by Elliot Raff Exemplar Rec ID: 73 |
Amelia, you have been a staple of the Boston judging community for longer than I can remember. Through that time you’ve done it all – ran weekly events, competitive ones, scorekept – you really are a jack of all trades. What I admire is that you continue to provide excellent customer service and quality events, week in and week out, and that when players know that you are at an event, they are in good hands. Thank you for your years of dedication making the Boston Magic scene a better community. |
To scott puccio Recognized by Joseph Steet Exemplar Rec ID: 74 |
Scott, your store ventured out of its comfort zone and held a major event off-site. You went so above and beyond in making sure that you and the rest of the judge staff would be prepared for this new challenge (running through everything on your own, then contacting others to see if there was anything you had missed or hadn’t considered), it really showed a tremendous amount of concern for your local players’ experiences, and I really wanted to commend you for it! |
To Jeffrey Gard Recognized by Riva Arecol – Nathan Rich Exemplar Rec ID: 75 |
Jeff, you were my mentee at GP Providence. It was great to work with you. You and I put together a solid working plan to get you started with the weekend, and you followed through very well. Further, when you learned the new paperless ODE system, you took to it quickly and learned a lot of good techniques for crowd management very fast as well. I was really pleased to see you maintain a high level of energy and effort throughout the whole weekend. I think you went well above the call of duty for an L1, and accordingly, I’m recommending you for Exemplar. Keep up the effort, and bring it forward to your next level. I’m happy to work with you along the way. |
To Andy Parris Recognized by Christopher Cahill Exemplar Rec ID: 76 |
Andy, I want to thank you for your hard work at Grand Prix Providence. You impressed me with your ability to handle your role as head judge of both the Modern Plus event on Friday, gearing up right as you got on shift, and also the logistics of the Team Sealed on Saturday, again right as you arrived on shift, with minimal instruction necessary. Your events ran smoothly and multiple judges commented on what an asset you were. Thank you! |
To Nick Casali Recognized by Brogan King Exemplar Rec ID: 77 |
Nick! You absolutely blew me away when we worked together at GP Providence. We had virtually no staff for on-demand events on Saturday, and you took point to help make sure they all happened consistently. We were slammed with events, but you were always there with useful information and insights. You have no idea how integral you were to the success of on-demands that day. (Well, now you do.) |
To Joseph Custodio Recognized by AJ Kerrigan Exemplar Rec ID: 78 |
“[Written in conjunction with Elizabeth Ann of the Bearded Dragon] Joe, I wanted to recognize you for your handling of the incredibly stressful and complicated situation that involved a pair of players cheating in one of your events and subsequently retaliating against you after being disqualified. For a very new judge, you handled the situation incredibly well, maintained your professionalism, and upheld a standard that all judges should look towards when dealing with difficult players. Keep up the great work!” |
To Griffin Russell Recognized by Eliana Rabinowitz Exemplar Rec ID: 79 |
We worked together doing deck checks for the Friday Competitive REL events at GP Providence. At first, you seemed really nervous, but over the course of the day, your skills as a Competitive REL judge really started to shine. We talked over several rules questions during the day, and while you didn’t know the answer to every question off the top of your head, you were able to think your way to the right answer with very little help. It is more important to understand rules and policy than to memorize every detail, and I was impressed by your ability to get to the right answer and also understand why that answer was right. You were also quite fast and accurate on deck checks, and you were focused on our task. There were a lot of judges for not too many players that day, and many judges get distracted in situations like that and start to clump with other judges instead of watching magic. You were on task, accurate, and open to feedback all day, and it made for a great day. Keep up the great work! |
To Nick Coss Recognized by Michael Mapson Exemplar Rec ID: 80 |
Hi Nick. I really appreciate what you do for the region when it comes to Eternal Formats. It might sound weird because I still haven’t actually been to your store but I have plenty of friends who are excited every month to come battle Vintage. Without you, we also wouldn’t have the Eternal Weekend which you work so hard to create. I also really appreciated that every time I saw you at Eternal Weekend this year you made sure to ask how my day was going and see if there was anything I needed. I really look forward to being at this event for years to come thanks to your hard work. (Though I do hope it returns to Philly) |
To Thomas Tyson Recognized by Joshua Hudson Exemplar Rec ID: 81 |
Tension grew between a player and yourself after a mistake on your end. Despite the player being irate towards your error you chose the high path to attempt to rectify the situation with non-hostility towards them. This is extreme maturity as a judge. Since then it has become apparent that your continuation of pleasantry towards that player has dissolved that situation to rectify your relationship with that player. |
To Timothy Mack Recognized by Joshua Hudson Exemplar Rec ID: 82 |
You bring many different players, some being judge candidates and additional L1’s, to an event that we meet up at regularly. From speaking with many of these players your presence among these people is held highly. These people look up to you as a leader in your group and you are fostering good rules education with them. Keep up the good work being a good mentor to them. |
To Alfred Dziewit Recognized by Benjamin Klein Exemplar Rec ID: 83 |
Al, you showed up at Grand Prix Providence on Friday evening eager to gain as much knowledge and experience as you could at the event over the course of the weekend and you did. On Friday night you came looking to get familiar with the event space and for a bit of information about what to expect for your two days on staff at the GP. We got you your new judge shirt and I made some introductions which you used to your benefit later on in the weekend. On Saturday morning you showed up before you scheduled shift and instead of simply staying in the judge area hanging out and meeting new people or playing in an on demand event prior to your scheduled shift you went looking for aspects of the GP which were new to you. You came and observed the deck check team and asked questions about our tasks and what we were doing without being at all intrusive. Then as we went on lunch break you joined our team and asked more questions through the course of the meal. You made sure to be in the judge staff picture which sometimes is difficult for a judge on side events and you stayed highly energized through your shift which I saw when I finished my main event shift Saturday afternoon. I found you late in the day on Saturday in the side event area doing your tasks with a smile on your face. You made sure to get a judge center photograph with a GP background at some point in the weekend and at the end of the weekend during the wrap up dinner I saw you talking to Kevin Desprez whom I had introduced you to on Friday. Many judges might be too intimidated as an L1 to go up to the Head Judge of a Grand Prix and talk shop, but you were not. You wanted to make the most out of your first Grand Prix tournament and you not only gained experience for yourself you helped make things better for others as you did so, that is exemplary behavior. |
To Daniel Haberek Recognized by Gilbert Medeiros Exemplar Rec ID: 84 |
Dan, your work at RSG events has been nothing short of exemplary. The players there trust.you and it takes a long time for a community to rally around anyone. Particularly, I was impressed at the expediency you ran both FNMs at the players never missed a beat. Keep up the good work. |
To Alfred Dziewit Recognized by Eliana Rabinowitz Exemplar Rec ID: 85 |
We worked together on the Super Sunday Series of GP Providence. You came on in the PM shift, and you were incredibly flexible in joining the existing teams to finish up the event. In the top 8, I was also incredibly impressed by your ability to record matches on paper. You tracked lands played, life totals, and all other game information in real time. That is a really valuable skill for quickly dealing with disputes in high-stakes matches. You were so attentive in watching magic, and that is an excellent example to set for judges of all levels. |
To Sam Hammond Recognized by Gilbert Medeiros Exemplar Rec ID: 86 |
Sam, at your local store TJ Collectibles, you run events weekly. Although you have only been a judge for short time, you have been active in their community and the players have come to respect your judgement and trust you to promote a fair environment. Also at the pPTQ we worked together you showed an aptitude and work ethic far beyond your experience. Particularly your interaction with a unhappy player highlighted your ability to keep a cool head and provide good customer service. |
To Charles Hartford Recognized by Megan Linscott Exemplar Rec ID: 87 |
Chuck, part of judging is being shadowed by the occasional judge candidate. A PPTQ we worked together recently had three. When you found out (on very short notice,) you asked if it was alright for you to jot down some notes for them. You created a very thorough set of notes and personally briefed all of the candidates to give them an idea of what to expect from their first tournament. This proved to be so helpful that you were later able to use it to publish a two-part article on it. Thank you for your dedication to the mentorship of other judges. |
To Dani Mansur Recognized by Megan Linscott Exemplar Rec ID: 88 |
Dani, you rescued me from a difficult situation while team leading Swiss sides at GP Providence. There was a breakdown in communication between registration and the sides stage causing events to repeatedly launch late. A few attempts had been made to remedy it, but in the midst of the hectic day, they hadn’t been successful. You helped me arrange a meeting with the TO who was leading the registration staff and together, we created a plan the made the following day run much more smoothly. Your foresight and diplomacy were what finally got the communication going again. Thank you. |
To John Weldin Recognized by Devin Jones Exemplar Rec ID: 89 |
I have had the pleasure of working with John multiple times, as he is good friends with the store owner of Play or Draw, which hosts the SCG Regional events in my area. Every single time, he has gone above and beyond what I would expect out of a judge for a 130+ person event. He is professional, knowledgeable, great with players, and cares about making sure the tournament runs as smoothly as possible. He is always a pleasure to work with and I hope I get to work with him again in the future. |
To Alfred Dziewit Recognized by Ryan Scullin Exemplar Rec ID: 90 |
Al, your work at the Cards Against Cancer event exemplifies your exemplary work in this region. I’ve never seen someone so eager to take on tasks to help an event run better, and it’s even more impressive given your level and experience. Whenever there was something that needed doing, you wanted to do it. Whenever there wasn’t something that needed doing, you wanted to find something to do. I know you’ll continue to do great things in this area and I can say for certain that you’ve inspired other judges to work harder. You’re welcome to remind me that we need to do another deck check at any event I’m working. |
To Michael Caffrey Recognized by Michael Mapson Exemplar Rec ID: 91 |
I owe a lot of my development as a judge to you. Getting to work so many of your events was very helpful thanks to all your great feedback. Your events are great for the region. I also really appreciate the work got are doing to keep the eternal formats relevant in our area. Thanks for everything. |
To Anthony Hullings Recognized by Max Perlmutter Exemplar Rec ID: 92 |
“Get the kleenex ready this one is emotional. I was having a conversation and I uttered the words “”Where would I be without Krug?”” You have been one of the biggest influences on my Judging career and the always present mentor. I can safely say without you I would not have been a successful L1 let alone an L2. You have been there literally from my first competitive event and when my mentor at the time was busy with their hectic life you stepped in and took me under your wing. The study group that you foster, Tolarian Academy, was instrumental in helping me find, demonstrate, and defend my knowledge and idea in front of a group of people which is something I have struggled with throughout my life. I can’t believe we have only worked that one event at the beginning of my career together but without you, I would not be the Judge or person I am today. “ |
To Riva Arecol – Nathan Rich Recognized by Casey Barnett Exemplar Rec ID: 93 |
Riva, while judging along side you during GP Louisville, you went above and beyond to help our team be successful. While shadowing each other, you gave constructive criticism that I’ve now made a point to improve on. For instance, you noticed that deciding what category an infraction falls under sometimes took a few moments for me to classify. I have now been studying the IPG in a way to help with this. Keep up the great work and hope to judge with you again soon. |
To Anthony Hullings Recognized by Russell Deutsch Exemplar Rec ID: 94 |
Krug is an incredibly unique spirit both in and out of the Judge program. When he enters a tournament location he does everything within his power to treat the space like a home. Other judges at the venue become his family, and the players are his guests. The sense of ownership his oversight creates results in an aura of pride for the tournament itself. This is most pointedly embodied by his attitude towards cleanliness. It is because of his proactive actions that almost everyone in the Judge program knows what the “J” in Judge stands for. He is constantly working to better the space he is in in all aspects. His upbeat attitude and positive energy while working is infectious, and his constant picking-up after players and straightening of chairs creates a visual reminder to all people involved that they are not attending a regular M:tG tournament, but a Krug Tournament. The ongoing effort Krug puts in to bettering the tournaments he works is truly exemplary, and is an example for all other judges to follow. |
To Ellen McManis Recognized by Ilan Seid-Green Exemplar Rec ID: 95 |
Ellen had a very difficult interaction with a player at SCG Worcester. Instead of simply stepping off the floor, Ellen found ways to continue being useful to the event but finding other tasks she could take up while taking the time she needed to recover. I was exceedingly impressed with her ability to continue helping the event proceed despite needing time away from the floor. |
To Rick Salamin Recognized by Mani Cavalieri Exemplar Rec ID: 96 |
You leverage your tremendous experience to provide insightful mentoring. On and off the floor of GP Atlanta this year, we had excellent conversations about the challenges facing the event, our team, and me specifically as a first-time GP Day 2 team leader. Not only has your long history of judging given you great awareness – both of the event, and of the performance of your colleagues – but you deploy that awareness through very insightful feedback and guidance. I experienced that first-hand all day, and especially during our debrief: I had wrestled all weekend with some difficult questions (such as “How do I provide mentorship to a team that is more experienced than me?”), and you were ready to provide practical suggestions and thoughtful advice. Your experience is obvious at every event you work (and every conference you help organize), and there are many aspects of your engagement with this program that are exemplary. This time, I want to call out your mentorship. I look forward to learning from you at each event we’re both in. |
To Jacob Kriner Recognized by Cristóbal Vigar Guerrero Exemplar Rec ID: 97 |
“Thanks for all your efforts provided in the project of customer service, in particular the prerelease documents, with your work we manage to finish this task in record time each time. I hope that you keep helping us on to keep this high standards that we manage to achieve.” |
To Eric Levine Recognized by Martha Lufkin Exemplar Rec ID: 98 |
Thank you, Eric, for taking the time to describe in detail your thought process after a recent DQ investigation. I was the first responder on the call, and was able to observe your questions and player responses during the episode. But learning afterwards why you asked those questions and how you interpreted the answers was invaluable. I’ve attended workshops and presentations on investigation, but nothing compares to an actual situation. |
To Russell Deutsch Recognized by Ally Robertson Exemplar Rec ID: 99 |
Russell, at GP Providence, I spoke with you about a not-so-stellar interaction you had with a player earlier that day. Even though it was at the very end of your shift, and was probably not easy to hear, you still listened to what I had to say and let me know you were taking that feedback into account. That willingness to take constructive criticism in order to grow as a judge and a person is exactly what makes the judge program so great. |
To John Alderfer |
“Hi John, I want to thank you for spending so much time helping me out with the situation I caused at my local game store. I know that your responsibility as RC is to deal with situations like mine, but in my opinion you went above and beyond the call of duty. You provided me with in-depth feedback on policy, philosophy, and conflict resolution, while simultaneously dealing with a player whose problematic behavior was made that much harder to resolve by my policy error. Through all this you were also sympathetic to me; as we discussed, part of the issue behind my mistake involved unpleasant experiences in my past, and I felt that your response to that history was accepting and genuine. Thank you, and I look forward to continuing to work with you (though hopefully under better circumstances!)” |
To Joe Kaiser Recognized by William Anderson Exemplar Rec ID: 101 |
You demonstrated your exemplary-ness when involved in trying to sort out the aftermath of a tricky USC situation. You stayed calm and composed while taking a fair middle ground that made the most out of a bad situation. You were firm, and portrayed the appropriate level of authority when you spoke with people and sorted things out. |
To Joe Hughto Recognized by Max Kahn Exemplar Rec ID: 102 |
At Grand Prix Indianapolis, we used a program you designed in order to run the on-demand events on Sunday. You were very willing to teach me and the other judges how to use the program and were instrumental in debugging issues when they arrived. The end result was a much more efficient and organized method of scorekeeping than at most GPs, and it made the lives of the judges and other scorekeepers easier. Thanks for your contributions! |
To Megan Linscott Recognized by Ben Eldridge Exemplar Rec ID: 103 |
I wanted to recognize the presentation you and Abbey gave at the Western Mass Judge meetup in September. Specifically the personal experiences you shared were very helpful to me in showing small ways that I could better support female judges and players at events. I’d really recommend you presenting this at a judge conference in the future as I feel your unique perspective would be beneficial to solving some of these problems. Keep up the good work in the future. |
To Nicola DiPasquale Recognized by Joseph Steet Exemplar Rec ID: 104 |
Nicola, your understanding of policy philosophy is astounding. At an event I was discussing a scenario with you where you and I had different opinions, I quoted something from the IPG and your response was “that has to be an error”, upon checking the AIPG they did in fact specify that line had an editorial error causing it to be read in a way (coincidentally mine) that was different than intended. I aspire to your level of policy knowledge. |
To Paul Baranay Recognized by Gabriel Batista Vieira de Sousa Exemplar Rec ID: 105 |
Paul Baranay, Bearz repeating is a great blog and i thoroughly enjoy reading it. I really appreciate the correlations between life and judging that you write about in your blog. For example, how we can apply Radical Candor in the judge program or even, that the program itself is a good place to pratice your leadership skills. For those and many more teachings, thank you! This recognition was made in partnership with Antonio Zanutto. |
To Eli Meyer Recognized by Joni Bailey Exemplar Rec ID: 106 |
Eli, at GP Louisville I witnessed you going above and beyond to help others on the judge staff. Specifically, you volunteered to act as the head judge of the Super Sunday Series finals when the original head judge was needed elsewhere. You did this without hesitation, even though you had already completed a full shift on the main event. Your actions allowed the GP to close down faster without interrupting the conclusion of the SSS. |
To Paul Baranay |
“Paul, I’m sure you will receive many exemplar recommendations this season. Some will be for your ongoing work on JudgeApps and some will be for your excellent leadership and mentoring abilities; and they will all be well-deserved. The effort you put into the program creates a monumental positive impact and you help shape what it means to be a Magic Judge. But this recommendation isn’t about any of that. This is about your more personal qualities. I would like to specifically point to your patience as being exemplary. You and I haven’t always had the easiest relationship in this program. There were several times (both in public on these forums, and in private) where I gave you reasons not to like me. In your L2 interview review of me you called me an iconoclast. I laughed out loud when I googled the definition of what that meant. I wouldn’t say you’re wrong. But despite all that, you never walked away from me. You somehow saw the good I could bring to this program and moved forward with our (albeit short) mentorship together. The patience and understanding you displayed while dealing with me as a difficult L2 candidate was truly exemplary and I think that all judges, myself included, should follow your example.” |
To Alexandra Yang |
“Allie, you and I have been working together for a few months at various events, but I think you did an excellent job to make up for past mistakes and leapfrog to success at GP Providence. You learned the new paperless ODE system, taking to it quickly, despite it being new to all of us. I got a lot of good feedback about your part in making the events run smoothly. You’re going to run into a lot of these challenges as you continue to pursue L2, but I have confidence that you’ll continue to succeed. Thanks for all your hard work so far. There’s more to come.” |
To Nick Casali |
“Nick, you went from zero to 100 very fast, between the Lake Compounce tournament and GP Providence being your first experiences at CompREL. You stayed on task and cool at both events, despite getting incredibly slammed at the GP. The paperless ODE system was new to all of us, but you learned it very quickly, and you handled crowds upwards of sixty times what we had at Compounce. I think your aptitude and adaptability will serve you very well in this regard, but be warned, you’re going to find them tested more and more often in the future. Best of luck, and I look forward to working with you on your road to L2.” |
To Joe Hughto Recognized by Chris Langston Exemplar Rec ID: 110 |
Hi Joe! I want to recognize you for an exemplary ruling I saw you deliver while I was attending E Weekend. It was either an appeal or an escalation from a floor judge involving a 14 card draw off of a Griselbrand. Players were failing to agree on the number of cards drawn, and it was clear that both players were on the verge of getting emotional. Deck counting can be pretty tough to get right, especially when players disagree. You defused it quickly and allowed the game to reach a natural conclusion without a lot of further argument. I was impressed with how you handled it, and will keep it in mind as an example to follow in my own rulings from now on. |
To Megan Linscott Recognized by Christopher Cahill Exemplar Rec ID: 111 |
Megan, I want to thank you for the time you spent with me online after your presentations on Women in Magic and Judging at both my local area meetup and the Northeast leadership conference. I felt your discussion at both events was so personal, so relevant, and so raw that I hope to see it with a wider audience in the future. More specifically, I cannot thank you enough for your willingness to delve deeper into the topics with me after the events. Your candidness and ability to communicate your points is nothing short of amazing. Thank you! |
To Joe Hughto Recognized by Christopher Cahill Exemplar Rec ID: 112 |
Joe, your google application for running side events at Grand Prix Providence was incredible. It made my three days of leading swiss events so much easier by allowing me to quickly and easily find where my events were, how large they were and where I had free space to put the next event. The shorter amount of time I spent with the ODE side was also excellent. Automated brackets with seating and all necessary information (who won, if they had been paid, etc) will be a huge asset to any TO willing to use it. Hopefully I will have the opportunity to use it again in the near future! |
To Nicola DiPasquale Recognized by Alexander Smith Exemplar Rec ID: 113 |
I’d like to recognize an interaction we had at SCG Indy in October. During a short meeting between us regarding the EoR plan in advance of your team taking a break and my team stepping in, you asked me how my day was. After I replied “not the best”, you fired off an effective pep talk. That experience of team leading had me agitated and off-balance, but our chat provided a beneficial course correction. The confidence boost helped me complete the rest of that team lead. Thanks for the support. |
To Joe Hughto Recognized by David Rubenstein Exemplar Rec ID: 114 |
For his work in developing the iPad on demand events system utilized at GP Providence, which allowed on demand events to run incredibly smoothly. |
To Megan Linscott |
“On Friday at GP Providence, I came to you with a potentially unpleasant situation. You were the Swiss lead, and we were heavily overstaffed. Some judges had been complaining about the perception that other judges were doing nothing, and the whole thing had the capacity to blow up as tempers were getting a little heated. Not only did you quickly address and diffuse the situation, you did so without letting anyone know that there could have been a problem. That sort of conflict management and people skills is, in my mind, exemplary. There were big egos involved, and at least one person was already upset by the situation. Well handled!” |
To Rob Castellon Recognized by Gilbert Medeiros Exemplar Rec ID: 116 |
Rob, I just wanted to take the time to recognize you for the work you have put into my personal development as a Judge. Recently, you have taken my work and criticized it heavily and in much detail. Through discussion, we were able to identify failures in my leading methods. Direct, thoughtful feedback is something that I really appreciate and something that I find the judge program to always need more of. |
To Zachary Apony Recognized by Paulo Jose Meira da Silva Exemplar Rec ID: 117 |
Zach Apony, during GP Providence, you spotted a logistical issue we were having; when players called us for their table, a horde of judges would rush to get it and the same horde would stay there to watch. That was harming floor coverage, and it also felt kinda intimidating for players. You elegantly approached other judges about this and explained them about the issue. You proposed an optimal amount of two judges should go to the table – one to take the call and the other to shadow – which is great, I really love the number two and judges shadowing others. Thanks for being wonderful. This recognition was written in conjunction with Antonio Zanutto. |
To Joe Hughto Recognized by Daniel Jackson Exemplar Rec ID: 118 |
Joe I just want to say that your spreadsheet and system for side events at Grand Prix is an amazing tool. I hope that you let all the TOs use this in the future, for it was a valuable asset. It made showing new judges how everything runs really simple, and didn’t take all day to explain to those of us who were used to the old way. Can’t wait to see more improvements, and use it again next year. |
To Daniel Jackson Recognized by Steve Peterman Exemplar Rec ID: 119 |
“Daniel, At the SCG Tour stop in Syracuse NY, you answered a call where a player had mulliganed to seven cards. While this is a rather straightforward call, you correctly identified that the player was confused and concerned about the process, and took the time to explain what had happened and how you were fixing it. This level of customer service is truly exemplary! Thank you!” |
To Craig Stambaugh Recognized by William Anderson Exemplar Rec ID: 120 |
“Your ability to accurately discern between lying and poor memory while HJ was exemplary. You conducted two difficult investigations while maintaining all the needs of the event (including not significantly delaying the event!). This aided the two investigations on the day we worked together. In one weekend, you demonstrated your strength in: understanding that just because what someone says is slightly inconsistent and/or incorrect does not mean they’re lying; knowing how to research effectively to accept or reject the lying hypothesis; and ability to arrive at the lying conclusion with confidence in a way where it was explainable to someone else; people handling skills; delegation of tasks; ability to adjust to the unexpected while “”juggling”” multiple things 🙂 “ |
To Matthew Foster |
“During the 2016 Somerset NJ Invitational, a player got quite upset with a ruling Matthew had given. Time had been called. So the active player passed the turn. The nonactive player began untapping assuming he would be turn 1 and simply waited. Matthew explained that this was not stalling but could have been if taken further. Matthew took time to sit with the upset player after the match to explain further and offered an appeal to ensure the player was comfortable. Showing this level of diplomacy with the players and ensuring they have an enjoyable tournament experience even after a ruling they don’t agree with is a great skill. It speaks an immeasurable amount about you. This is the exemplary behavior all judges can look up to as an example. Keep up the great work Matthew!” |
To James Eveland |
“I could write you an Exemplar recognition for like twenty-five different things about your mentorship skills especially towards me or how you are a Force of Nature when it comes to PPTQs in your local area. This recognition is about one of the little things At Eternal Extravaganza 4 back in June, it was HOT! Standing up near the top tables was a humid deadly heat that caused numerous judges to have to sit and rest after being there for just a single round. On your later break during that long day, you personally went to Rita’s Water Ice and bought a huge container of water ice for all of the judges to share so we could cool off with a sweet treat in a sweltering hot venue. This small act really helped me push through the long day and kept the overall morale high amongst the staff. “ |
To Megan Linscott |
“Megan, you’ve recently lead multiple discussions that shed light on the challenges of women in Magic. Your willingness and ability to discuss this topic and to share personal experiences is incredibly important. You have increased my awareness and you continue to make me a better judge and person. Above and beyond that, you continue to be one of the most enjoyable judges to work with. You have nigh boundless energy, are willing to do any task and excited about learning.” |
To Riva Arecol – Nathan Rich Recognized by Caitlyn Hebert Exemplar Rec ID: 124 |
“Riva was great to work with at GP Louisville. Riva and I handled a cheating investigation together. Riva took point and I was supporting. Being on the sidelines, I was able to observe from a far and notice the care and calm that Riva possesed throughout the investigation. I particularly liked how Riva began by responding to a player’s acusation with “”so, you’ve said something that makes me want to talk to you away from the table, could you come talk with me?”” Riva was happy to have a discussion with about the situation afterwords and gave me some great insight, especially about being calm under pressure and about perspective when in these and similar situations as judges. Thank you Riva and continue being an awesome judge!” |
To Ian Taylor Recognized by Benjamin Klein Exemplar Rec ID: 125 |
Ian last night I read your statements on Facebook welcoming Elise Taylor to the judge community and I read her post about the great day she had which included her becoming a judge. This recognition is for neither of those things on their own. It is for the course of the journey you took Elise on that I have witnessed for the past number of years (ever since that PTQ or 5K you stood in for Rob Dougherty as the TO for where Eric Shukan was the head judge and Elise helped out with a number things that day including deck checks.) Back then Elise was interested in becoming a judge but it was not an obvious match given a number of factors including her anxiety issues and having to deal with you as a father who was already so noteworthy in the judge community. Throughout the entire journey Elise has taken to becoming a level 1 judge you have shown that despite having real issues with certain aspects of the judge program you believe in the program and the people that make it up. You believe in what judging can be so much that you have helped Elise become a member of our community and you have strengthened our community while you have brought her to events and shown that such a variety of people can find a home within the judge program. That commitment to the program and to helping our community grow is exemplary behavior and deserves recognition. Well done! |

To Adam Eidelsafy Recognized by Russell Deutsch Exemplar Rec ID: 127 |
In addition to being a Magic card, Humility is a trait that goes overlooked by it’s own nature. Adam has dedicated the last 2 years of his life to perfecting his abilities as a Judge. He knows the rules well and he knows all the important roles at the biggest tournaments. He works tirelessly as a mentor to almost a dozen judges at any given time. He once helped a judge in another country whom he has never met by hand-delivering a special present to Italy. Three times I have seen him take a $50 taxi ride and split his one-box comp just to provide a mentoring opportunity for his mentees. Each week for the last year he has traveled to teach a judge class, overcoming uncooperative weather and the hardship of finding private space in NYC. If there is a question to be answered, Adam will always be there. No matter how late at night or even what city he is in he will always have time to talk about Magic or answer a particularly nagging question about SBAs. I have never met a judge that didn’t respect him for his accomplishments. Despite all these things I have never heard Adam try to bring any attention to the work or accomplishments he’s achieved. Adam’s reserved nature won’t allow him to boast because he believes that his behavior is unexceptional, when in reality it is anything but. The monumental positive impact Adam has on the lives of the people he touches would never be known if you were to have a conversation with this incredibly humble person, and I find that to be truly exemplary. |

Your focus at GP London came across as being on the development of your fellow judges, a vital part of the Judge program and a truly lovely thing to see. What, in particular, displayed this was your push for a judge with less experience, not more, to perform the end-of-round procedure on the Super-Sunday Series so that they could learn and add to their skill set. Developing as individuals, as a team and as a community is all about the incremental gains and this is exemplar nomination is for your contributions towards that. |

Gil, at GP Louisville, you tried to comp me out and handed me a check with my current name on it. I asked if it was possible to get my comp at a later date because I was in the middle of getting my name legally changed and didn’t have a bank account yet. Instead of making me wait another month or so, you found a solution that allowed me to leave the event with my comp and without TJ’s having to sign a check with my dead name on it. I very much appreciated that and I look forward to working more events with you. |

Jeffrey was at the Atlantic Canada Judge Conference 2016 and did a presentation on the IPG. Regardless of the generality of the presentations subject matter I felt I was educated and in a impactful way. I can only imagine the effect he had on the L2 hopefuls in the room. I was truely wow’d with his thorough and extensive knowledge of policy and his ability to translate that to others. Good work Jeff, hope to meet you again. |

Jonah, thank you for being proactive about checking-in and helping with the goals of your fellow judges. Thank you for touching base with me multiple times at SCG Syracuse to ask about my goal’s progress. I was sharing this interaction with Chris Rumore, and he confirmed that you indeed were awesome for helping others with their goals. Great job! |

When you were in charge of the deck checks team for the GP Providence Super Sunday Series, you expressed some apprehension about your first time team leading at a GP. I’m writing this not only to reassure you that you did well, but that you were a particularly strong leader in the unusual system this event used. You clearly came in with a plan, which is very important, but you were able to adjust it on the fly, when some of the parameters of staffing changed. That mix of planning and adaptability is what I think makes for a great team lead, and I’d be thrilled to work on a team led by you in the future! |

At GP Atlanta side events while off duty you had an unfortunate event happen that made you have to call the judge over and led to a DQ. This was clearly difficult for you and is not a pleasant task for anyone, but the way that you put the integrity of the tournament (that you were not even judging at) above your personal comfort is admirable. Even when we are not wearing the shirt we are still judges and your actions exemplified this, keep being amazing. |

I want to thank you for helping me ease into judging at mye first GP in London. There were of course a lot of friendly judges at the GP, but the way you took initiative in helping me getting started on my first shift made a huge difference for me. By asking me to work together with you before I got specific tasks, giving me tips on how to effectively collect booster wraps and discussing interesting scenarios, I got more confident at once and less worried about the tasks ahead, and I even learned a lot. Talking to other judges are not that difficult, especially when you are as social as you are, but it is easy to think that everyone else is busy with their own tasks or will ask for assistance if needed. For me, I got the support I didn’t know that I needed, and I think that is one of the main reasons I had such a great time the whole weekend. |

Andrew I wanted to recognize the lengths you were going to in order to work with your Judge Buddy at GP Providence. I feel like the combination of asking judges he knew for area’s he could work on as well as judges you knew to help target those area’s was a winning combination and helped Patrick have a great first GP. I hope you continue this level of mentorship in the future as this is what every judge buddy deserves. |

Mani, the conversations that we have had, particularly with regard to policy, are always insightful. You and I may not always agree, but you always help me to see an alternate way of thinking about scenarios and issues and you expand my viewpoints. This is particularly valuable, as many people (myself included) have a tendency to fixate on what we believe to be correct and defend that point vehemently. You have a real skill in being able to see all sides of an issue, and present coherent, well-thought out points to each side’s validity. |

Thank you for the incredible work you do in the Mid-Atlantic tournament scene. Though I haven’t worked alongside you in a few years now, it’s a pleasure seeing you at events. Your warm, welcoming atmosphere is really appreciated by the players. I’ve also appreciated your personal drive to write more about judging. By reflecting on our mistakes and weaknesses, we can improve. |

At GP Louisville, you were part of the Friday deck checks team for the Competitive REL side events. When it was discovered during a deck check that one of the players had unknowingly been playing with a large number of counterfeit cards, you helped to determine which cards were fake and took the time to explain to the player how to spot fakes. Later, you made sure that even though the player had dropped from the event since most of his deck was fake and could not be quickly replaced, he still received the prizes that he had already earned from his record in the tournament. Several judges told me how your interactions with that player were really sensitive to how upsetting that situation can be, and you made that player’s day much more positive than it could have been through your actions. |

Abby, I want to recognize your contribution to the last Western MA judge meetup. Your presentation with Megan Linscott concerning women in Magic and Judging is not only very important, but you both did an excellent job discussing the topic with the audience. The specific examples used helped me to better understand the issues that women face not only as players, but also as judges in this community. I was absolutely shocked to learn of some of the issues you have faced as a judge, particularly that the NJ Invitational was one round shy of being the first event where you weren’t randomly asked out. You really made me consider some of my own actions and how they could impact those around me, such as answering a player at a call when you were the actual responding judge. Thank you for the illuminating and vibrant discussion! |

Ally, I think it absolutely exemplary how you single-handedly made Much Ado About Judging exist. While other people are involved, you spear-headed, managed, edited, and created an entity that does and will have a deep impact on the judging and Magic community. I’m proud to consider you a collaborator and peer and I admire the initiative you take in and out of events. The podcast is simply the most outstanding example of your drive for making judging an amazing community for everybody. |
To Kush Singhal |
“Kush, You were the ODE Night Lead at GP: Providence. You did an awesome job of being prepared. You showed up Thursday night, sat down with Gil, brought a folder of questions, and worked out a plan with him the night before the event. Packout was smoother because you were on top of what was where and you worked to make sure that events started to fire in contiguous spaces, which let me have judges grab tablecloths from entire blocks of tables. I’ve seen too many judges show up to an event and try to figure stuff out the day of, and that can work, but it requires more effort.” |

Your involvement in the RI and SeMA community is palpable. Particularly your diplomacy and work organizing Pptq’s in the area is greatly appreciated. Thank you for making the area great! |
To Mani Cavalieri Recognized by Matt Cooper Exemplar Rec ID: 144 |
Mani, in the wake of the incident that occurred at the SCG Syracuse Open, you were one of the most vocal judges in discussions about the USC: Major penalty and asking thought-provoking questions about its nuances, viability, and possible need for flexibility, all while maintaining a civil tone of discussion. You saw an issue that was important to many judges in the community and you made it visible for a lot of us in the Northeast. That kind of leadership is something I greatly appreciate seeing in judges. 🙂 |

Gil – You put an insane amount of work into our Leadership conference. Specifically ensuring that everyone had both breakfast and lunch. I was moved by the amount of passion and effort that you volunteered. You made sure that everything ran according to schedule and that everyone’s experience was a favorable one. |

Gil, every season I wonder what I could possibly recognize you for that goes beyond what you’d done the season before, and every season you manage to step up your game. Previously you’d been committed to seeing that people in our area get to have as many chances to qualify for an RPTQ as possible. Now you’re committed to making all events in this area even better through your Tolarian Academy initiative, making sure all our stores have a certified judge, organizing local judge meetups, and even taking the reigns of TO to raise money for charity. Judges in this area are constantly reevaluating what they can do in the judge program as a result of your push–me included. Even while being the center of so many efforts, you’re doing something I’ve seen very few judges focus on: ensuring your area will be in good hands without you. |

You are fearless when it comes to feedback, demonstrating a willingness to tell people things that others are afraid to. This isn’t easy, and we’ve talked about some of the ways to work around and through potential issues that can arise from such direct feedback. It’s a learning process, but I’m pleased that you choose to engage in it, as it is critical for real growth in the community. |

Jonah, I was very impressed with your work as Head Judge at one of the Classics at SCG Syracuse. You were attentive to your team leads and floor judges, you stayed very closely engaged with your event, and you walked the floor and stayed aware of the whole event while remaining visible. This is above what I expect from an L2 HJ. Kudos! |

“Dan, Thanks for going the extra mile during GP NY and stay a bit longer for the QFs of the Top8. After a long day which was exhausting on its own you showed great care for the event which doesn’t end when R15 ends but goes on for 3 more rounds, by dedicating some of your private time to get it started and sorted out. Not only I, but also the players and coverage team benefitted from your commitment. Thanks!” |

Thank you, Joe, for representing the Judge staff so powerfully for ConnectiCon. You fought hard for us to get hotel, transportation, and everything else we needed for the events. You acted as our spokesperson to the higher ups at the Con, and I cannot thank you enough for how hard you fought for us. Thank you for your efforts in treating us well. 🙂 |
