Maintenance is defined as “the process of keeping something in good condition.”
And for us Magic Judges, that is about maintaining our Judge Level. Some of you might be wondering, how do you maintain yours?
Fear not, Yu Win Yew, a L3 Judge from Malaysia, will be sharing to us a very simple maintenance guide that would definitely help L1 judges on maintaining their status.
Hi all!
Welcome to this simple guide for maintaining your L1 for the upcoming year.
If you have done this before, please continue to do the same again to maintain your level for next year.
If you are newly certified to L1 just this year, please read this carefully.
There are two requirements to maintain your L1:
1. Judging
The first requirement of maintaining your L1 status is to judge a sanctioned event at least once every six months.
In order to have your record judging in sanctioned event, you will need to have your DCI number entered into the judge tab in the WER event window, like this:
- If you are the only judge in the event, you can directly enter your DCI number into the Head Judge section, once your name checks through and the event uploaded, your judging records will be updated.
- If there are multiple judges in the event and you are not the head judge, click on the “More Judges” button next to the Sanctioning Number, and enter your DCI number there instead.
- If you have multiple DCI numbers before and the numbers are already synced to your Wizards account, please ensure that the DCI number you enter in WER matches the DCI number that you used in JudgeApps. If you are unsure which one it is, you can login into JudgeApps and check it under your own profile.
Please maintain a good habit to key in your DCI number whenever you judge in a sanctioned event, be it casual or competitive. If you’ve helped in answering and explaining rulings in any event, you’re already judging!
2. Rules and policy knowledge
To ensure that each judges maintain the required level of understanding of rules and policy, each L1 is required to pass a L1 practice exam at least once per year. You can find this test under the “Exams” tab in JudgeApps. Low performers will be referred to their Regional Coordinator for follow-up.
As an L1, if you’re actively judging this should be relatively easy. Even if you might find the idea of taking an exam rather daunting, just remember that as L1 judges, passing the practice exam was a prerequisite for us before we can actually take the actual exam to get certified, so we’ve done that before.
If you have any doubts or questions, feel free to message any of the closest L2+, your mentor or your most friendly cat herder, Wearn Chong
