The first Magic Community Cup (MCC) started in 2017. This year we are aiming even further and bigger. Not only there are more shops in alliance, we are also using this event as a new training ground for judge fledglings. Ever since in-store GPTs were abolished, L0 and L1 judges have been struggling to gain tournament judging experience.
There were total of 6 rounds of qualifier events at individual stores, culminating to a final tournament on a neutral ground. The whole event was promoted as “The Best Warm Up for Nationals” because every event also has Competitive Draft rounds, which is a very rare chance for players who don’t attend PPTQ regularly. The final tournament had a total attendance of 64 players. Instead of a Top 8 draft we ran a “Top 24 draft”, so that more players can enjoy the full tournament. It turned out that this was a great exercise for new judges as well, as we never really got to judge an event with more than 30 players.
A total of 7 judges participated in this event: Pym, Nhong, Draft, Arm, New, Donut, Bean. Our greatest news that during this whole event season, 2 judges were promoted to a higher level (Nhong, from L1 to L2, and Arm, from L0 to L1). The other two L0s are now training hard for their upcoming L1 exam.
Apart from big events like RPTQ and Nationals, it’s very hard for the judges to get to work together like this. MCC has proven to be another opportunity for the judges to practice teamwork and mentoring each other in the areas they are still lacking. The mentors also had a chance to practice mentoring to the new judges.
Big thanks to SEA Judge Program in helping this event become possible. We all know that we love shinies and we are willing to work hard for them! Lastly, another big thanks to all the 6 shops alliance in bringing this event to fruition: Hobby Bugong, Magic Dojo, The Tricker, Bob Card, NX Gallery, Magic Century. See you again in MCC 2019!!
