Judge Manager, Europe – East edition

Welcome to the Europe – East edition of Judge Manager, the Game.

This community-oriented game is designed around staffing a Premier event. For this edition we will be staffing a RPTQ in Istanbul, Turkey (wouldn’t be great to have a RPTQ in the region?). The estimated player attendance is 300 players, and a lot of judges applied to this event, 33 judges! The WPN site has all the information you need to know about RPTQs.

We need to be careful making the right selection to better serve the event needs, and to provide players a great experience.

Now, how does the game work?

Each applicant (see the bottom of this article for the full list) has a Mana Cost that will be relevant for your staff selection.

Giorgos Trichopoulos      Yakup Çakmak      Abdulrahman Alhadhrami

For example Giorgos has a Mana Cost of 6Black or RedRed or GreenBlack or Green, Yakup has a Mana Cost of 3, and Abdulrahman has a Mana Cost of WhiteWhite. Click on the cards to enlarge.

We need to staff 10 judges: 1 Head Judge, 1 Scorekeeper, 2 Team Leads, and 6 Floor Judges. There are some requisites the selected staff has to meet:

  • The staff should be precisely 10 judges.
  • The combined Converted Mana Cost of your staff can’t be greater than 25.
  • When your whole staff is on the battlefield your devotion for each of the 5 colors should be at least 2.

Each applicant will have some points assigned for each of the possible staff roles. This means that when you select someone for a specific role you will accrue the points for that role only.

Let’s see some hypothetical examples (these are not the actual points for these judges!):

Example Giorgos Trichopoulos      Example Yakup Çakmak

If you select Giorgos as your Head Judge, Yakup as a Team Lead, and Abdulrahman as Scorekeeper, you’d get a total of 23 points, which sounds great. However, if you select Giorgos as Scorekeeper, Yakup as Floor Judge, and Abdulrahman as Team Lead you’d only get 7 points. Not the best choice of roles, don’t you think?

But this game won’t be that easy, of course! The game will start with the scores of each applicant for each role being secret, we are publishing below the list of applicants without their scores. I will contact each applicant so each of them decide what are their own scores – I won’t be releasing that information in full. In the example above I’d ask Yakup to distribute 12 points among the four roles, and what I will be asking of applicants is to assign more points to the role they think will be better at, and less to those roles where they think they’d not perform well. Judges should score themselves higher on those roles that, if the were staffed as such, would benefit the event the most.

Now, here comes the fun part: you can publicly discuss your selection, talk to other applicants to find out what their scores are, share or exchange information, etc. You can do whatever you think it’s appropriate in order to be a better informed Judge Manager, so you can make the optimal selection for each role. Knowledge is power, and the more you know about the applicants the better chances you get of making the optimal selection!

Some information for you to consider:

  • The higher the Judge Level, the more points that judge will be allocated to distribute among the four roles.
  • Country Coordinators have a Converted Mana Cost of 3, and will have more points allocated than the rest of Level 2s, whose Converted Mana Cost is 2.
  • Judges with colorless Mana Cost won’t help you to meet the devotion requirements, so they will have more points allocated than other judges with the same Converted Mana Cost. Similarly a judge with Mana Cost RedWhiteWhite will have less points allocated than a judge whose Mana Cost is 1WhiteWhite. However a judge whose Mana Cost is BlueBlue will have allocated the same points as a judge whose Mana Cost is BlueGreen.

Are you having fun already?

Contestants should submit before Sunday 19th June at midnight GMT through the below Google Form their proposals for staffing this event – remember the full list of applicants is at the bottom of this same page! Illegal submissions (combined Converted Mana Cost greater than 25, not enough devotion, etc.) will be discarded. The submission that accrues the most points wins the game, that simple.

There will be some prizes, according to Giorgos these will be “tangible things that you may brag about”. Everyone is welcome to participate, although if you’re not a certified judge of the Europe – East region you won’t be eligible for any prizes.
