Normally, "any number of target [things]" can be "zero," but when you're dividing something (like damage), at least one target must be chosen if possible. So don't monstrify Polukranos when your opponent only has a deathtouch creature!
Category: Triggered Abilities
Putting Prossh, Jeleva, or Marath onto the battlefield without casting them isn’t that great.
If you’re not casting Prossh, Jeleva, or Marath, their cast/enter the battlefield abilities won’t do anything.
Widespread Panic vs. tutors (and the double whammy vs. Green Sun’s Zenith!)
Don't Panic about tutoring with Widespread Panic! It doesn't force you to shuffle away anything, since the trigger doesn't go on the stack until after the tutor has completely finished resolving (i.e., after you shuffle).
Daxos of Meletis and Lands
Around here, two or three different people have gotten infected with Daxos fever. There’s multiple commander decks kicking around, and he’s a fun card to play with. He can’t be blocked by bigger creatures, so unless your opponent has chumps to throw his way he’ll get through unimpeded. Once he does, you get to exile […]
Heroic and Cipher Interactions
Cipher is the mechanic associated with House Dimir from the recent Return to Ravnica block: spells with Cipher allow you to ‘encode’ them onto a creature, and cast a copy of the spell for free every time the creature connects with an opponent. Heroic is one of the mechanics from the more-recent Theros set, which […]
Possibility Storm + Bestow
Possibility Storm cares about the "spell" that was exiled, not the card as it exists in exile. A bestowed card will be exiled as an Enchantment-Aura, so you have to dig for an enchantment card to cast.
Use Bow of Nylea to draw a card when a lonely Chronicler of Heroes enters.
will always trigger when it enters the battlefield, even if you don’t have any creatures with +1/+1 counters on them at that time. From a rules perspective, this is because Chronicler of Heroes’ ability doesn’t contain an “intervening if” clause. The ability will trigger even if your Chronicler is all alone when she enters the […]
Cloning/Mimicing your heroic creatures won’t trigger their heroic abilities.
s (cards that copy something as they enter the battlefield), such as , don’t target. No matter how hard you try, when you choose a heroic creature with clones such as these, the heroic trigger’s requirements (1. That it’s a spell you cast, 2. That it targets this creature), won’t be satisfied because why? It’s […]
Whip of Erebos + Aetherling & Obzedat
Whip of Erebos's exile effect only matters if the card would be going anywhere other than exile. If a Whipped card is moving to exile already from its own ability, it can return normally.
