If you are part of the arbitration program and you do not live under a rock you have heard the recent announcement of Wizards of the Coast on the exclusive management of ChannelFireball Events (CFBE) Grands Prix in 2018 and for the following years . Some arbitrators expressed their uncertainty and concerns about some aspects of the arbitration program under this new arrangement. We understand that changes can have this effect. This raises doubts and creates new risks but also gives rise to opportunities.
Some of these worries come from some of our most experienced and dedicated voices. These voices deserve to be heard. We listened attentively and will continue to listen as long as necessary. Meanwhile, we met with representatives of CFBE and found that both parties need to establish a collaborative relationship. The objectives declared by CFBE and the objectives of the arbitration program (which we have never expressed, let us be honest) are not identical but have much in common.
- The arbitration program is based on principles of service, integrity, community, respect and trust. These principles are part of every event we arbitrate and this will not change. This will not change, whether the event is managed by CFBE, any other organizer or a community of Magic players anywhere in the world.
CFBE also places great value on these qualities.
- The arbitration program is constantly trying to create an environment that meets the needs of our players, our referees and (in the case of the Grand Prix) of CFBE as well.
CFBE also seeks to meet the needs of the players and has indicated the desire to continue to build a lasting relationship with the arbitration program.
- Some of the most talented referees are part of the CFBE organization and they understand very well the functioning of the arbitration program, its needs, and the potential risks.
This already makes a bundle of generalities. You need more specific actions from us to make this more feasible. Below are some key points that emerged during the meetings between level 3 referees and representatives of CFBE (held in Barcelona, New Jersey and Shizuoka). More actions will have to be undertaken according to the state of the collaboration, so if you feel that we are silent for too long, please let us know:

- Une autre crainte qui nous a été communiquée de manière répétée est au sujet de la compensation. CFBE a clairement annoncé qu’ils ne prévoyaient pas de réduction au sujet des compensations.
Finalement, comme pour chaque événement et opportunité, chaque arbitre a besoin d’évaluer le ratio coûts/bénéfices et de décider pour soi-même. Nous attendons des arbitres qu’ils choisissent de dédier leurs disponibilités aux événements qu’ils estiment les plus rentables, et qu’ils reconnaissent que les Grand Prix ne sont pas les seuls événements disponibles aux arbitres.
- Les Grand Prix représentent des opportunités uniques pour démontrer les capacités nécessaires pour la progression, comme le Chef d’équipe dans le processus de progression pour rejoindre le niveau 3. Avec toutes ces occasions dans les mains d’un seul organisateur, quelques candidats au niveau 3 ont exprimé leur crainte qu’ils n’auraient plus la possibilité d’atteindre ce niveau 3.
