Petr Hudecek

This week’s Judge of the Week is Petr Hudecek, level 2 from Tabor, South Bohemia, in the Czech Republic. Petr began playing with in 2003 with the release of Mirrodin, however, after just one year stopped playing. As we, all know stopping playing Magic is no easy task, and in 2009 Petr began playing again. He soon became a rules advisor and then a bit later passed his Judge exam.

What interested you in judging?
I was always interested in judging, ever since I’ve had my first look on the vastness of the Comprehensive rules. Knowing all that seemed a nice a fun challenge. Anyway, I was 11 years old at the time so I didn’t really have the possibility to judge. However, when I started playing again in 2009, I noticed the Comp. Rules really expanded since the last time I checked. I guess I wanted to prove myself that I can do it…

What is your most memorable judging experience?
At the PTQ associated with Grand Prix Prague, I worked under a head judge… and this is embarrassing — I cannot even remember his name… anyway, this judge, when players appealed or when something happened on the floor that required his attention, he was so good. I mean, of course he was polite, knowledgeable and clear. We all are. But he was nearing perfection. No matter the personality of the player in question, he always succeeded in explaining everything the best way it could be. And looking at him doing the rulings… was memorable. I would really like to be some day like him.

Favourite Magic format?
Planechase & Archenemy. I much prefer friendly non-competitive games. I often make decks out of cards that nobody else would use. These formats allow me to win despite that.

Favourite Magic storyline character?
Barrin during the events of Time Streams. That was the most epic storyline with the most greatest characters ever. And Slobad from Moons of Mirrodin is pretty cute, too.

Favourite Magic Card?
Broodstar. The main star of the Baits and Bludgeons Mirrodin theme deck. It won me many games in the day. And it cost 10 mana! None of my friends had a card like this.

What do you do outside of judging?
I’m a student at a grammar school. In addition, I am a scout leader and a hobbyist programmer.

Name one Planeswalker that you would want to have while stranded on a desert island.
None of the new depowered walkers. Not because they’re depowered, but because they’re not black or white. I never know when a planeswalker could turn against me. They all have those plots and stuff. If I had to choose, I would take Ajani Goldmane.

If those who are no longer planeswalkers count, I would choose Slobad. Because he’s cute like that.

What’s your favourite rule or section of a policy document?
I like the philosophy section of the Agressive Behavior infraction: “The safety of all people on a tournament is of paramount importance. There will be no tolerance of physical abuse or intimidation.”

It has such a nice ring to it. It summarizes a lot within a few epic words.

Reader Challenge – Two Truths and a Lie
Two of the following are true and one is false! Work it out!

1) I have passed an important maturita exam today, with top marks (maturita is our high school leaving exam). I’m still very happy about it.
2) I have created three completed computer games, the most recent of which you may download at sacculus.weebly.com. Go download it. And read the accompanying book. This was not an advertisement.
3) I have passed my L1 exam with a 100% score. I have passed my Rules Advisor exam with 100% marks, too. Twice. Oh, and on all end-of-the-year school reports, I’ve never had anything but the best possible marks.

The false statement is [#3! It would be pretty unreasonable to get 100% on everything! 🙂]
