Reality Fractured: A Missed Triggers Guide to the Echoverse

Mastermind Jace Beleren has pushed reality to its absolute breaking point, trapping us in the Echoverse. But even in a multiverse stripped of its basic tenants, we still have to deal with our greatest enemy: Missed Triggers.

With Reality Fractured bringing us massive color shifts, including Planeswalker tokens, there are plenty of new ways players might accidentally fracture the game state.

Here is your guide to handling the triggers of Reality Fracture at Competitive REL.

Triggers that Upgrade to a Warning if missed

Face Yourself

Has another card depicted this many Planeswalkers in its art before? Face Yourself creates an army of creatures matching an opponent (Fantastic!) but gives each creature an Intervening If trigger that makes you sacrifice it at the beginning of an end step if you don’t control a planeswalker (Boo!).

Having creatures is way better than not having creatures, so this will upgrade to a Warning if missed.

If that Player controlled 6 creatures this way and missed all of these triggers, do not give them 6 Warnings, just one will do.

When taking a judge call about this, remember the trigger says, “At the beginning of the end step…” which means all of them, not just its controllers or the most recent end step only.

Frostbite Pyromental

Anything that resembles Ball Lightning AND can be Collected Company’d gets our attention.

This Elemental has two triggers on it, but only one will earn a Warning. Drawing cards is usually a great thing to do, but missing to sacrifice it is not such a great thing and earns a Warning.

Vindictive Triumph

Two Lilianas on one card, with one of the Lilianas calling the other a tool! What a fun card!

Unfortunately, if you happen to triumph by returning a card exiled with this card to the battlefield and do not sacrifice it, do not think the Judge is being too vindictive by issuing you a Warning.

When this trigger is missed, the opponent chooses whether to resolve the ability the next time a player would get priority or when a player would get priority at the start of the next phase.

A neat little interaction here: If a player is somehow able to end to turn with this delayed trigger on the stack (Sundial of the Infinite) this trigger will not trigger again at the next end step; it will now stay in play. Talk about a triumph!

We wanted to talk about a couple of cards we Hoped-Wood Prepare you for when it comes up!

Infinite Coursework

If you forget to tap the enchanted creature, the remedy is to tap it now. This is different from other remedies like with delayed triggers that undo zone changes or Deck Problems.

From the IPG, “If a enters [the battlefield] trigger of an Aura that affects only the enchanted permanent AND causes a visible change to that permanent, resolve the ability immediately.”

Dark Matter Manipulator

There are a few cards in FRA that self-mill, but reference that self-mill later on the card that would not upgrade to a Warning if missed.

Liliana the Repentant

Primal Witchstalker

Until next time, keep your reality intact, and may your Jace tokens always survive the turn!
