Brainstorm and Notion Thief
Welcome back! Today we’re capping off the week with a Legacy-centric tip, in honor of the Eternal Masters previews starting next week! Notion Thief doesn’t see a TON of play in Legacy, but it can be absolutely backbreaking if you time it right. One such time is against Brainstorm, Legacy’s favorite one mana draw spell. Brainstorm itself is simple enough- draw 3 cards, put 2 from your hand back (and then crack a fetch, obviously). Notion Thief is simple enough, too- it steals card draws from your opponent. But how does it interact with Brainstorm specifically? Very poorly for your opponent! Instead of drawing 3 and putting two back, YOU will draw 3… but your opponent will still have to perform the rest of the actions of the spell and put 2 cards from their hand on top of their library! Notion Thief’s replacement effect only works on the card draw portion of Brainstorm, leaving you up 3 cards and your opponent down 2. Brutal.
