You Can’t Bounce the Dead!

Today we'll be talking about the wording on some targeted spells and abilities- specifically, things that tell you to "return target creature to its owner's hand". They've been around since Day One with cards like , allowing you to temporarily get rid of a threat at a low cost, or even to save one of your own creatures from a sticky situation. But the wording is very specific- "target creature". Whenever an effect refers to a card type like that, with just the type, there's a sort of invisible word

Kaladesh Prerelease Week: Vehicles!

Welcome back to the Rules Tip Blog! With the Kaladesh Prerelease coming up this very weekend, we'll be going over some general tips for the prerelease, as well as a little tutorial on the new mechanics of the set. We'll start this crash course (I will not apologize for the pun) on the first: Vehicles! Vehicles are an interesting new subtype of Artifact; they have a slightly different frame, and a brown Power/Toughness box. Despite having P/T printed on them, they're not creatures- not inherently,

How to Coax From the Blind Eternities

Some years back during Judgment, we got a cycle of rares called the Wishes. All of them would pull cards from outside the game INTO the game. Since those original five, we've gotten a few other "wish" type cards, including the new . Coax will pull any Eldrazi card you own from the Exile zone inside your game, OR from outside the game altogether! But what does that mean, exactly? Are you going to lug a big binder full of Eldrazi tech to FNM? Well you shouldn't- within the context of a sanctioned event

Bestow and Sigarda’s Aid

Today we'll be talking about another card from Eldritch Moon, but in the context of some slightly older cards. is a nifty little trick for decks that like to beef up their creatures- it lets you flash in your Auras as combat tricks or at the end of your opponent's turn, and it lets you flash in Equipment and then attach them to things for free! But how does it work with Auras that sometimes aren't, like the Bestow creatures from Theros? Well, the answer is "quite well". Normally the way Bestow works

How Splice Works

Welcome back to the Week of Modern here at the Rules Tips Blog! Today we're going over a core card in another deck archetype- Grishoalbrand. More specifically, we're looking at and and how the Splice mechanic works. Splice was a mechanic introduced in the Kamigawa block about 11 years ago, and it lets you sort of build your own spell! Both and have the subtype "arcane", which is good because Splice cares about subtypes (technically it only cares about Arcane right now, since the only Splice cards

Awaken: One Land, or Many!

Welcome back to the Rules Tips Blog! This week we'll be discussing the new mechanics from Battle for Zendikar, starting with Awaken today! Awaken is an alternate cost found on Instant and Sorcery spells, costing more than the 'normal' cost. If you cast the spell for the alternate "Awaken" cost, you get the added effect of animating one of your own lands as a creature! For example, has Awaken 4. That means if you use the Awakening cost, you'll target a land of yours, and it'll become a 0/0 creature

Modern Masters Week: I’ve got Soul(shift)

Welcome back to Modern Masters Week! Today, we'll be covering... Soulshift! No points for guessing, I told you that yesterday. Soulshift is another mechanic from Kamigawa block, which was heavily laden with Spirit creatures. Put simply, Soulshift lets you get back OTHER Spirits when your current Spirits end up dead. It's always followed by a number (for example, "Soulshift 2"), and that number tells you how strong of a Spirit you can bring back. Soulshift 2 means that when dies, you can return target
