You cannot pay life that you do not have.  For example, you play Demon of Death’s Gate via it’s alternate casting cost if you do not have at least six life.  It does not matter if you do have three black creatures to pay the other part of the cost.  This is also true if some effect prevents you from losing the game if you have a negative life total.
