Contested War Zone‘s last ability gives +1/+0 to all attacking creatures. This ability will only affect those creatures that are attacking when this activated ability resolves. If this ability is played and resolves in the first main phase of a turn, it will effectively not do anything as there are not any attacking creatures yet.
One other important thing to note is that while the +1/+0 effect is only applied to creatures that are attacking when the ability resolves, this effect will remain until the end of turn. If a Spikeshot Elder attacks, gets +1/+0 from this ability and then later in the second main phase the Elder’s activated ability is used this ability will deal two points of damage.
