While it is generally not necessary, you can target a creature with an equip ability even if that equipment is already attached to that creature. For example, if the only creature you control is equipped by Piston Sledge, you can activated the equip ability of the Piston Sledge targeting this same creature and choosing to sacrifice some artifact to pay this activation cost. You normally would not want to do this, but in some circumstances it may be strategically a good play. (An example would be if you wanted to sacrifice an artifact while controlling a Fangren Marauder to gain the 5 life.)
