Last week, the tournament tip explained how rolling a die to determine a game or match winner is not allowed. Just as you should not randomly determine a winner, you also should not offer anything to an opponent to connive them into conceding to you. Also, you should never accept an offer like this. If a player ever extends such an offer, you must call a judge immediately or you risk being disqualified along with the player who made the offer to you.
As mentioned last week, the goal of Magic tournaments is to determine winners of games, matches and the overall tournament based on playing games of Magic. If you are unable to win a game of Magic, it should be just that, an instance where you don’t win. Allowing bribery of any type lessens the achievements of others.
It should be noted that there are some exceptions to this policy. All players in the single elimination portion of an event may agree to split prizes evenly amongst themselves as long as the tournament organizer also agrees. At that point, they can choose to play the remaining matches for ratings points only, or to end the event.
Also, the final two players in a single elimination event may choose to split the remaining prizes and have one of those players drop from the event (this is NOT conceding). In these instances, no match result is recorded.
