Tovolar’s Magehunter has an ability that triggers whenever an opponent casts a spell. When this ability resolves, the controller of that spell will be dealt two points of damage.
It is important to note that this ability does not necessarily trigger for each spell on the stack–just for those that are cast. There are a few ways that copies of spells can be put on the stack without being cast. For example, the Storm triggered ability puts copies of spells onto the stack. These copies are not ‘cast’ and therefore will not trigger Tovolar’s Magehunter’s ability. Keep in mind that the original spell with Storm will trigger this ability because it was cast.
Another example of a situation where a copy of a spell is put on the stack without being cast would be via the ability of Curse of Echoes. Curse of Echoes’ ability triggers whenever the enchanted player casts an instant or sorcery. When this ability resolves, each other player in the game can put a copy of the spell that triggered Curse of Echoes’ ability on the stack. As above, these copies are not cast and will not trigger Tovolar’s Magehunter’s ability.
