Starfield of Nyx and enchantment creatures.

Oh, Opalescence. It, comboed with Humility, was the bane of many judges’ and rules gurus’ existence. Even though things have been figured out for a while now (we even have a Gatherer ruling to cover it). But now they’ve brought back “Opalescence” in the form of Starfield of Nyx. It’s not that bad this time, but there have been quite a few questions about how it works with the enchantment creatures from Theros block. So let’s dive right in!

We have a Starfield of Nyx on the battlefield, and enough enchantments on the battlefield to turn on the Starfield’s animation effect. Then we cast a Courser of Kruphix. What happens to the Courser? What are its power and toughness?

Since the Courser is a non-aura enchantment, it is affected by the Starfield’s ability. When we determine what the creature’s power and toughness will be, we start with the creature’s printed power and toughness, then we apply the effect of the Starfield. Since the converted mana cost of the Courser is three, the Courser ends up as a 3/3 creature, instead of a 2/4 creature.

So Starfield of Nyx can transform your Courser from a Colossodon Yearling into a more aggressive Trained Armodon. And it gets even better with some of the other enchantment creatures, who can go from tiny to big depending on their mana cost.
