Attacking or blocking is a status that is given to creatures in combat when they attack or block. A creature will become either attacking or blocking when legal blocks or attacks are made. This status will remain until the combat phase ends.
For example, a creature that was attacking earlier in a turn is not a legal target for Rebuke.
Keep in mind that the ‘attacking’ or ‘blocking’ status will last through the entire combat phase. After combat damage is dealt and abilities that triggered from combat damage being dealt have resolved, players will still be able to use spells and abilities during both the combat damage step and the end of combat step.
For example, if you attacked with a Sturmgeist and dealt combat damage to an opponent, you will draw a card when its ability resolves. If you draw a Divine Verdict, you can still cast it to destroy a creature that blocked during this combat. The blocking creature will have already dealt combat damage, but you can destroy it at this time with Divine Verdict because it’s still a “blocking” creature for the remainder of the combat phase.
