Miracle doesn’t work when a card is revealed for Duskmantle Seer or Dark Confidant.

Cards, cards, cards, cards, cards, cards, everybody!

Everyone loves drawing cards, right? And it’s even better when these cards are miracles!

Miracles are a special group of cards from the Avacyn Restored set that you can sometimes cast for a reduced cost. However, Avacyn is very particular about how she hands out her blessings. In order to qualify for her angelic discount card, the miracle needs to be the very first card you draw in the turn. More importantly for this particular Rules Tip, you have to actually draw it.

There are many spells that result in simply drawing extra cards, from the humble Thought Scour to the mighty Sphinx’s Revelation. However, there are other effects that just put cards into your hands directly, such as Duskmantle Seer and Dark Confidant. This is not the same as “drawing” (if the effect doesn’t use the word “draw” then you’re not drawing any cards), and the miracle ability will only work if you actually draw the card. For example, if you flip over Entreat the Angels to Duskmantle Seer’s triggered ability, you’ll lose 3 life and won’t be able to cast the card for its miracle cost.

This cuts both ways, though. Suppose you reveal Entreat the Angels to Duskmantle Seer like before, but then naturally draw another Entreat the Angels as your regular draw for the turn. Because the first Entreat didn’t count as “drawing”, the second one will, which lets you use the miracle ability! Thanks, Avacyn!
