Annul can counter an enchantment spell that’s also a creature.

Every new Magic set includes a number of thematically-appropriate reprints, and Theros is no different. Today we’ll be looking at Annul, originally printed in Urza’s Saga, the first “enchantment block.” Annul saw a reprint in Mirrodin, themed around artifacts, and makes a return in today’s Standard with Theros, another set with a significant enchantment component.

With all the artifact creatures running around in Mirrodin, Annul could be an unusual way to give blue creature removal, since it could counter artifact creatures as well as plain ol’ artifacts. Similarly, in the Theros set, Annul can counter enchantment spells regardless of how many additional types they have. If you cast a spell with bestow, like Hopeful Eidolon, whether you choose to pay the alternative cost to make it an Enchantment — Aura or just leave it as an Enchantment Creature, Annul will be able to counter it. Annul can also counter Erebos, God of the Dead: regardless of how much devotion you have, it’s always an enchantment (and a creature) on the stack. It can even counter spells that are both artifacts AND enchantments, such as Bident of Thassa!
