Today’s Rules Tip written by Jen Wong
Abzan Beastmaster always triggers on your upkeep.
Abzan Beastmaster, at first glance, isn’t much of a card on its own, but if you have a few friends in the Abzan clan’s stable of super-tough creatures, it can draw you a lot of cards! Let’s take a look at how it works. On your upkeep, the Beastmaster will always trigger, regardless of what toughness your creatures have. Whether or not you draw a card depends on who controls the creature with the highest toughness when it resolves. This means your opponent can play removal spells or tricks to try to shrink your creatures, or play buff spells on their own creatures — but you’ve got access to all the same tricks. So even if you only control the Beastmaster, you can untap, put the trigger on the stack, then super-size it with an effect like Honor’s Reward to get an extra card and make it big enough to tangle with your opponent’s creatures.
