Cycling is a keyword ability first introduced in Urza’s Saga and brought back multiple times in a variety of ways. To cycle a card means to pay its cycling cost, discard that card and to draw a card. Initially all cards had the cams cycling cost of 2 generic mana. But that was changed when cycling came back in Onslaught block where a variety of different payments were used as cycling costs. Basically, cycling allows you to pay a cost to replace the card in hand with a different card from the top of your library.
In Scourge, the final set of Onslaught block, another twist was brought to the cycling mechanic. What was originally called landcycling allowed you to pay the cycling cost to discard the card with landcycling and search for a basic land card with the appropriate land subtype. This was changed once again in Conflux, the second set in the Shards of Alara block, with a series of cards with basic land cycling. These cards allowed you to cycle the card and search for any basic land. When basic land cycling was introduced, the land cycling mechanic was eliminated renamed typecycling. Both specific land type cycling and basic land cycling are covered by typecycling. In fact, typecycling could be used in the future to search for cards of a specific supertype, type, subtype, or a combination of the above.
