Most triggered abilities only apply when the card with the ability is entering the battlefield, in play, or leaving the battlefield and going to some other zone. However there are a few triggered abilities that can only work if the card with the ability is in some other zone other than the battlefield. For example Bloodghast‘s ability can only work when the Bloodghast card is in a graveyard.
