What you can do with your electronic device during a tournament.

Nowadays, it seems like everyone has a smartphone, PDA, or some other kind of electronic gizmo in their pocket or purse at all times. Luckily, the latest update to the Magic Tournament Rules recognizes that we live in a very different world than 20 years ago (can you believe Magic is almost that old?) Section 2.12 covers the new policy, which allows you to do the following things with your electronic device:

  • Keep track of life totals or other game-relevant information. Remember that you’re required to have a visible, reliable method, and all life total changes must still be announced verbally. You can also generate a random number when the game calls for one.
  • Take and review notes. You don’t have to let your opponent read your notes, but the screen of your electronic device must remain visible. You can also view Oracle text this way during a game, as long as it’s from a source (like Gatherer) that contains no strategic information. If you want to review notes in private (such as for sideboarding), call a judge.
  • Answer personal calls not related to the game, as long as you obtain the permission of your opponent or a judge first.
  • Remember that the Head Judge can further limit or ban the use of electronic devices beyond what the Magic Tournament Rules allow you to do. If you expect to be in a situation where you must be able to access your electronic device at any time during the tournament, it’s best to check with the Head Judge beforehand.
