You can cast Krosan Grip targeting Standstill, but you won’t be happy about it.

More Double-Legacy days! I hope that many of you are safely in Denver, or on your way there for the event, and I hope you have fun and do well! On to the tips.

Krosan Grip is a lot of fun in Legacy and EDH both, because it’s very difficult to deal with. Since it has Split Second, your opponent can’t respond with spells or activated abilities, so it’s one of the few surefire ways to get rid of a Sensei’s Divining Top without them just spinning it to the top of their deck. But while powerful, it’s not unstoppable. Split Second doesn’t preclude triggers from triggering, so anything that would trigger from Grip being cast still triggers.

For example, while it is a completely legal play to cast Grip aimed at your opponent’s Standstill, it is a very BAD play. Standstill will still trigger, the trigger will resolve and let them draw cards, and then your Grip fizzles because it has no legal target.

Same deal with Counterbalance; while your opponent can’t use Top to try and manipulate a 3-drop for Counterbalance to show, Counterbalance will still trigger and your opponent gets a shot at trying to counter Grip, or Extirpate, or anything else with Split Second.
